All the schools should be offered the tests

As mentioned here. Would be helpful for those going to visit people over the holidays. They are offering them to students going home and those visiting care homes.

Yes all students should be offered tests but not so they can go and visit people over the holidays. It's quite a selfish reason for why secondary students should have tests. They should be tested to help to stop the spread. By detecting cases, you can isolate and stop them transmitting to others. As Gov have said, the cases are extremely high in secondary students. They should all be offered tests and not just the areas where they are offering these tests.

So is it also selfish to test university students as they are doing that before they head home for the holidays?

I think the increased positives from the increased testing (uni students, families who want to feel safer to mix, etc) will lead to rates that look like they’ve soared over Christmas, and they’ll be used to put us back into lockdown in January... but I’m not sure there’s a way around that at this point.

As it stands; I’m trying to mentally prepare for lockdown again, and we’re not mixing this Christmas. I can’t take a test in good faith; I have no symptoms, and I don’t feel comfortable mixing with older relatives.

I also wonder if people “knowing” they haven’t got it will lure them into a false sense of security, and mean that they behave in a more lax manner, and then someone gets it...

So I’m not sure. It’s all so nuanced now.

At this point I think the reason that only school students in Kent, London and Essex are being offered the vaccine is because they are Kent Essex and London.

bellinisurge · 11/12/2020 17:49

Correction: a test not the vaccine

No I would not say it is selfish. They are being tested because they have been away from home and are now returning to their permanent family home and the tests ensure they can return home safely. I don't think anyone should expect them to remain at halls or where ever else. I don't think you can compare the two as secondary students would be assumed to already be living at their family home.

If people can afford it they can get these tests for their 'bubble' prior to Christmas. But should that be just for those who can afford it?

No, as they are travelling back to their permanent household. It’s not so they can mix with other households during the holiday.

Why should the government/taxpayer pay for tests for everyone? It’s not a right to mix with family at Christmas, if people are worried they shouldn’t mix households or pay privately. Can you imagine the delays and backlog of every child was tester prior to Christmas? People who actually need tests wouldn’t be able to get them.

noblegiraffe · 11/12/2020 21:26

Uni students are not as infected as secondary students. The suggestion that they should be tested but secondary students shouldn’t is illogical. Both will be spending time with family that they can give it to and the secondary kids pose more of a risk.

It's an absolute disgrace that as soon as London starts to be affected all the stops are pulled out.
Mass school testing is something that should have been available in other parts of the country months ago. Yes, London is big. Yes, London is suffering right now. But the rest of the country has been thrown to the wolves.

psychomath · 11/12/2020 22:45

I'm guessing they don't have the capacity to produce that many tests in time, otherwise they probably would? As there's not really any downside to it that I can see.

At this point you're r talking bollocks. Where does it say those students are getting the vaccine?
Augustbreeze · 11/12/2020 23:47

@bellinisurge corrected herself already, she meant tests
