People who have had a anaphylactic history, can’t have either of the COVID vaccines currently available, anyone else in the same situation?

I would have had the jab if it was safe, I also can’t have the flu vaccine because although the injection contents and the bung the needle goes though are without latex.
they put a latex cover over the needle, which ended up as me getting bluelight transport and a few days in HDU,that was when I last had the flu jab in 2012.

My GP won’t let me have jabs unless I go into hospital, but she and I knows that hospitals will currently have a huge amount of airborne latex.
So we know going into hospital to have the jab then I’d end up with The crash team on standby.
My husband said They were rapid & very good when they were called see us all, in the allergy testing clinic.

I’d just had the skin prick tests, that triggered my very first anaphylactic event in the consultants surgery, which proved handy as a learning experience, as he got to see a live anaphylactic reaction from start to finish. I got a very clear diagnosis. My DH was with me in the office so the consultant explained everything to him, poor DH was quite sure I wouldn’t survive. We got used to dealing with it, but had over a dozen ambulance trips in the first year.

How do those of you with an anaphylaxis history handle the people who think You’re just being a precious little ❄️

There’s a lot of abuse for those who don’t have the new COVID jab, people like us can do without the abuse, how do others handle that?

I shouldn’t have to explain and justify, I’m considering telling the more vocal people who are pro vaccine no ifs or buts, that I’ve had the jab so I don’t get abuse.

What, if anything have people found that has helped them?

Do you have any tips for me?
I’m on a couple of groups, but the one just for latex anaphylaxis I joined recently, is a bit odd, even by my standards
Lots of talk of what stuff is latex free in sex shops, on the need-to-know basis, it was too much for me to know, when talk turned to latex free double ended dildos and bondage gear.

Any and all ideas welcome —I— —hope—

@trulydelicious yes and that’s why if you can you should take the vaccine because it will keep you healthy?? Or do people not trust the science, research and peer reviewed papers??

I’m honestly bamboozled with peoples arrogance if they think that a layman’s research deserves more credence than the science backed and funded research over the years (and yes years because even though it’s a new disease it’s not all new science in the vaccine)

@Bumble84

Yes, I'm taking the trouble of reading a lot of research, peer reviewed papers and a variety of people's opinions because I'm concerned about this issue.

I thankfully can read, have a brain and can make my own decisions. Thanks

Bumble84 · 11/12/2020 10:01

It wouldn’t have actually been approved though if all these papers and research wasn’t sound and robust. I’m genuinely curious what people think, do you and others think you’re going to find an error?

I won't be able to have it. I've been hospitalised more than once because of allergic reactions. I am gutted. Not being able to travel has cut me off from my family in Australia, and travel there is likely to be vaccine dependent

Not sure about Australia as I understand measures are currently very strict there

But other countries have already started to require PCR tests for entry. It will not make sense to make entry conditional on vaccines that not everyone will be able to have

ilhahih · 11/12/2020 10:49

I've had two anaphylactoid reactions to antibiotics in the past. Not full on anaphylaxis but severe enough that I am not allowed to take antibiotics without medical supervision. I have not needed any antibiotics since the reactions - I probably should have had them a couple of times but my GP is very reluctant to give me them.

I'm assuming that I will not be allowed the Pfizer jab and in fact I would be very reluctant to get it now. (I wasn't that keen in the first place but would have had it if and when called for the jab).

If I am allowed to have it and decide to go ahead I will insist in having it done either in a hospital hub or at the GPs where I can be properly supervised and not in one of the hubs which are going to be set up here (I'm in another country) where hundreds of people are going to be vaccinated at the same time by soldiers and volunteers from the community with just a couple of medical personnel supervising.

This is why mass vaccination is so important. To get herd immunity so people with genuine reasons to not have it don't need to have it. Anaphylactic shock must be so scary. Hope you're ok OP

trulydelicious · 11/12/2020 10:52

Also it seems that contraindications (or not) of each Covid vaccine for different groups are becoming apparent now that 'mass' vaccination has started (e.g. the allergy issue)

Who knows what these recommendations will look like in 6/12 months time?

ScottishDiblet · 11/12/2020 10:56

I’m in this boat even though I would definitely have wanted the vaccine. I hope there is a solution offered. Funnily enough after years of not having the flu vaccine because of my egg allergy (including when pregnant) I had it for the first time this year and was totally fine. So that gives me hope.

Phyzzy · 11/12/2020 11:08

I have lots of allergies but not anaphylactic. I've had reactions to a few drugs but again not that severe. I will have the vaccine but hopefully in a medical setting. I have several underlying medical conditions.
The risk of covid to me is worse than the risk of a reaction to the jab.

cologne4711 · 11/12/2020 11:55

It’s precisely for people like you that others should get it done. I think people forget not everyone has the luxury of being able to be easily vaccinated and we need to establish some sort of herd immunity to protect those people

Please will people stop saying this. It's not the case for the covid vaccine which hasn't yet been shown to stop transmission. You have it to protect you, not to protect others. That may change if it is found to stop transmission as well as illness.

As for the allergies, I thought anyone with a severe allergy would have to be careful with all vaccines, not just this one.

Surely if fewer people are ill, then there's less Covid to go about though?

I have severe allergies and vaccinations are not contra-indicated. I get a massive local reaction lasting several weeks every time I get a vaccine though.

Rowgtfc72 · 11/12/2020 16:18

I had an allergic reaction to something, we're not sure what, but we suspect it was glycerine in cough medicine. Everything swelled up and by the time the doctor discovered me sat in the waiting room I was ushered upstairs and had needles jabbed in my backside. She was also debating calling an ambulance as she was worried about my throat closing up. I felt fine, other than hot and itchy, but she said next time just to call 999 and not sit waiting for my turn. We did at least discover antihistamines make me red, blotchy and itchy!
Would this mean I wouldn't get the vaccine?
