COVID test while self isolating

I have tried to look up the guidance but I can’t see it anywhere so I thought I would ask here.

My husband is currently self isolating after coming into contact with someone in his office who tested positive. As a family we have decided to all self isolate even though I know me and my DC do not have too. ( I work from home and DC is not school age)

DH tried to get a test when first contacted by track and trace but they said because he does not have symptoms he wasn’t eligible for one.

However in our area cases are rising fast and residents have been advised to get a test even if well. There is a centre set up outside where you can get the results in about half hour.

So is my DH allowed to leave the house to get this test. I’ve seen pictures of test centres where people are queuing outside which if they are getting a test they must have symptoms and are isolating?

Yes you are allowed out for the purpose of being tested.

Straight there, straight back, wear a plague mask, ring a bell and shout 'unclean' if anyone gets too close.

It would seem sensible to get one if you are allowed. I'd probably do it 5-7 days after he had contact if you have a choice.

But bear in mind that he has to continue self-isolating even if the test comes back negative. It doesn't change much except giving you some peace of mind.

Thank you, yes it is more for peace of mind but didn’t want to be potentially breaking the rules and acting selfishly just for that.

Why does he want a test? Sorry if that is a silly question, but if he's a symptomatic then the test result may be inaccurate. The whole point of self isolation in this circumstance is that you can incubate the virus for up to 14 days, and in that time will most likely test negative. With the rapid testing kits then chance of false negatives increases further.

That should say if he's asymptomatic, sorry!

These tests (the ones with 30 mins turnaround) are not for diagnosis. They are for picking up cases in the community that would not have otherwise been picked up. They have been shown to miss half of positive cases. They are not for people with symptoms and I would say, not for people who should be isolating. Your responses here may well be from people assuming this is the same as a test for those with symptoms but it is not.
