AIBU to think that we are the unluckiest family for self isolating?

My children went back to school yesterday after 2 weeks self isolating. My youngest child has now had to go and self isolate again for 2 weeks.

Two days he had back at school!!

In the last 9 weeks they have been in self isolation for 6 of those. Now it will be 8 weeks out of 11 of isolation. My child has been at school for just 6 weeks out of the 14 weeks of the autumn term.

Our isolation has looked like this...

Two weeks for all on 18th March (youngest had a cough).

Early May 2 days for all as I had a cough and awaited keyworker test results.

Late May 3 days as eldest and youngest had a cough. 3 days isolation then awaiting their test results.

That was it.... until September.

14th September my eldest had 2 weeks after a positive test in his college class. The day he returned to college, my middle one had a positive test in his primary bubble. Then 2 days later my youngest also had a positive test in his bubble.

That kept the younger two isolating until 15th October. They returned for 5 days before half term. Half term it rained 24/7 and as in tier 3 area - not much indoors to do anyway! So the poor children were still cooped up inside, our small garden an absolute mud bath and has been unusable ever since.

They all returned to school and college after half term. By the Wednesday 4th November (my bloody birthday!) we were all in isolation as my other half was symptomatic. He was positive. So we duly did our 2 week isolation.

We all returned on Thursday 19th November. The Tuesday 24th we started lateral flow tests at work. My first test that day was bloody positive. So despite being free for 5 days only, we were now plunged back in to an isolation.

That took us up until this Tuesday. And now here we are again, the youngest straight back in to isolation.

You couldn't make this up! I'm just aghast at how many times we will continue to suffer in this way. My poor children. Especially my middle one who has SEN. They are suffering so much academically.

Can anyone beat our dreadful record?!

Oh! I forgot we isolated for a weekend too when partners daughter was sent to him with a temp - so he had to get her tested and we all had to wait for results. That was the weekend of 11th Sept.

8 isolations. 8!!!

Sorry you've had a really bad time with it. Hope things improve for you all.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 09/12/2020 21:38

That sounds like a nightmare. We haven't had to isolate once (yet!)

Stories like yours are why it makes me so cross when the government breezily announce that “it’s so important for exams to go ahead”. How can it possibly be fair to assess children who’ve had to isolate in this way (and you won’t be the only ones) against those who haven’t had to isolate at all? I feel like the only person in the world that can see the gulf of the disparity.

ThisMustBeMyDream · 09/12/2020 21:59

I was saying this with my (primary teacher!) Dp tonight. He is in full agreement, how on earth is this fair on children like mine when others will have had minimal or no impact this academic year.

My younger two are yr 3 and yr1. Yr3 child is sen and struggling hugely. He will have a HUGE impact on him. I am doing everything I can to get him extra help. My younger child has missed more school over his 4 terms at primary school than he has had in. By some miracle he is at above yr 1 standard (he's bright, my teaching is shit). He is unlikely to suffer. But my poor middle child... I just want to scream in anger and frustration.

I might write to my MP for her to maybe see the plight of her constituents. I don't know what else to do.

@Lemons1571
On the matter of exams there isn't another method that isn't proven to be systematically biased so it's balancing the unfairness of disruption to education against the unfairness caused by bringing bias into grading.

Lemons1571 · 10/12/2020 07:19

@StatisticalSense it’s whichever is the least biased I suppose. I would personally prefer a few kids getting an inflated grade. Than some poor sod who was on A’s but because of repeated isolations, a school that was rubbish at setting home schooling, no live lessons, and not finishing the content, ending up with D’s. Adjusting the grade boundaries only goes so far.

We're really lucky and haven't had to isolate at all. Really feel for the children who have to keep missing school.

DirtyDancing · 10/12/2020 07:31

Gosh that is really tough. We are just going through our first school related isolation now. I am completely pro the kids being back at school, but I do question it when kids are having to isolate inside so much as the result of it. The trade off is high for them. But gosh to go back to full time homeschooling.. eek. It has been worth it for us. One 2 week isolation since being back. I suspect post Xmas we’ll have many more though

HallFloor · 10/12/2020 07:33

DS1 was only back at work for 1 day, following a positive test in a colleague, before I tested positive. He gets no pay while he's off, I feel so sorry for him but at least he's living at home with no real bills.

I can really see why some people would decide they can't afford to isolate properly.

Angel2702 · 10/12/2020 07:34

That’s awful. My son has just started his first isolation this week. Cases are through the roof at their school. My youngest is one of fewer than 200 pupils still in school so I can see us having to isolate for whole of Christmas.
