How many will ignore isolating to get Christmas food?

I was just thinking tonight what a nightmare it would be if we had to isolate for any reason in the next 2 weeks.

Absolutely no delivery slots at all! Other people really busy with their own shopping etc.

How many people will just ignore isolating? And would you blame them?

I would just ask a friend to shop for me rather than go out...I’m sure there are options.

hesaidshesaidwhat · 09/12/2020 18:14

We had this very conversation last night! We came to the conclusion that we would do a click and collect and ask a friend to collect it for us. I guess the fact is though that if for example the school were to contact you at the exact time you were shopping then you would just continue on!

wakemeupwhenitssunny · 09/12/2020 18:14

I’m isolating even if no delivery slots you can order fresh food on Amazon in fact anything on Amazon - so no need to not follow the rules - thing I’m wondering about is how to get a Christmas tree!

MynephewR · 09/12/2020 18:16

Well, yes, I imagine that lots of people won't isolate when they should because they want to get Christmas food. But then I think that lots of people are not isolating when they should be anyway. Tbh I don't judge people ignoring isolation rules unless they have actually tested positive, in that situation they really should be strictly isolating.

SaltyAF · 09/12/2020 18:17

I will. I'm a teacher and would be very surprised if I have to isolate at Christmas given that I'm not usually considered a contact; but if so I don't have a delivery slot and will not be putting up with soup and a cup of tea for Christmas dinner on top of the other bullshit of this term.

PrivateD00r · 09/12/2020 18:24

We are trying to keep well stocked up in general with food after discovering first hand what a nightmare it is when the cupboards are bare! Thankfully we have great friends and family who saved the day. We have ordered a hamper from a local shop with all the meats and we always have potatoes and veg in anyway. We would just need someone to collect the hamper or maybe they would deliver if we explained. There's always a way, no need to break rules.

BlackeyedSusan · 09/12/2020 18:34

Lots of cheeses have dates well past Christmas. Also crackers.

You can get meat and veg and pigs in blankets for the freezer. Potatoes will keep in a cold place.

Smoked salmon freezes. Soft cheeses are in date.eggs should still be I date for Christmas. Bacon freezes.

Mince pies are well in date by Christmas.

Get yourself as many things ready as possible.

StCharlotte · 09/12/2020 18:42

I'm isolating at the moment but have tested negative. No delivery or click and collect slots for love nor money.

DH not isolating but doesn't drive so I might drive us to the supermarket and wait in the car while he goes round.

This isn't about Christmas food though, this is about day to day food as we're a bit stymied right now. It's only the two of us for Christmas so I'm not stressing about that although it would be nice to think there'll be some sprouts left in the shops once I've done my time!

It might have been wise if the supermarkets had reserved some slots for people isolating with no notice. You'd have to upload your positive result or isolation notification.

My own fault really. Should have prepped Grin

ChristmasSlayRide · 09/12/2020 18:47

This was my fear.

I have everything in, cashed in all our vouchers in September to pay for it. I'd prefer fresh veg, if I can get them I will, but I will not have Christmas thwarted.

I'm mentally exhausted after a health scare and keeping chipper for my kids. I need this.

Namechangeforthis111 · 09/12/2020 18:52

No delivery or click and collect slots here at all!

We have one weekly normally but massively missed the boat. People are very organised!

Presents I could manage online, but food would be a nightmare!

We are isolating at the moment and Iceland was the only place with slots. The other shops are like gold dust or late at night

In my experience the range of food available isn't great with Amazon Fresh.
BrieAndChilli · 09/12/2020 19:03

I’m trying to get as much as I can in advance so stuff in the freezer and all the cupboard stuff/snacks etc. Will get cheeses etc in the next couple of days so all that is left is fresh veg/cream/bread/milk etc so not too much to ask a friend to pick up if we do have to isolate.

OverTheRainbow88 · 09/12/2020 19:04

Local shops around here are delivery if needed, green grocer, butcher etc
Even the local coop would walk around a bag of food

There’s lots of options

HallFloor · 09/12/2020 19:04

I'm having a little smug moment today, having received a positive test result this morning.

I have a good stock of tinned, dried goods, toiletries and loo roll.

I have recently set up the milkman for milk and OJ deliveries due to trying to reduce single use plastic - I can add eggs, butter, cheese and bread

I have a weekly veg box delivery, also due to the plastic thing

I have Smol laundry and DW tab deliveries, see also environment.

I have regular deliveries from a local butcher and fishmonger, both businesses who were working with restaurants before lockdown 1 but who quickly adapted to domestic deliveries when the restaurants closed and who have provided excellent service and done quite nicely from it so intend to continue. I certianly intend to continue supporting them.

So, I think we're OK, despite no supermarket slots. After the last debacle, I was determined never to be reliant on supermarkets again.

lunar1 · 09/12/2020 19:18

I have everything in already and a click and collect slot booked for my fresh things. We have a WhatsApp group for our street and have helped each other out since this began.

We are all prepared to go collect a neighbours food shopping if needed. I'm never bloody moving-I love my street!

TicTacTwo · 09/12/2020 19:27

Does your local Aldi do click and collect? A lot of people don't know that it's an option. Major downside is that you can't amend the order so have to be armed with a list but this could be a good option?

RedRiverShore · 09/12/2020 19:30

I think that Amazon Fresh is only London and the Home Counties, Amazon do do a Morrison delivery though but just grocery not fresh.
Our Waitrose has the odd slot come up but obviously it's not the same in all areas

FestiveChristmasLights · 09/12/2020 19:32

Most people can get neighbours, friends or relatives to pick up a fortnight’s worth of food if nowhere is delivering. I think (hope) the majority of people would do everything possible to ensure they either have enough food in to get by or have people that will help out. I do think it being Christmas means more are likely to break the rules that would usually but I think that’s expected and will be a contributing factor to tighter restrictions and an increase in cases next month.

ceeveebee · 09/12/2020 19:34

Depending on where you live, Deliveroo and UberEats deliver some groceries from Co op, Aldi, booths, Londis etc

junglepie · 09/12/2020 19:36

Well, it is possible some people would I suppose. Which is sad and wont help with the increased spread over the Christmas period.
Im an NHS frontline clinician, dh a teacher. 3 school age dc and 2 uni students now back home. Chances of us needing to isolate at some point are probably quite high! Therefor I have got a lot of stuff already. All non perishables, snacks, crackers, crisps chocolates, biscuits, baking supplies etc... drinks (alcohol and shloer!), have got emergency Christmas dinner food in the freezer (Turkey crown, pigs in blankets, frozen veg etc) Also have weekly veg box delivery I can add to if needed, plus milk delivery. Toilet rolls from who gives a crap on regular subscription. All presents bought. Christmas tree and decs all up. I do also have supermarket delivery slots booked, but didnt want to be totally reliant on those, which is a good thing it seems because the delivery due today was cancelled due to "operational reasons"

Butterflight · 10/12/2020 13:46

I've stocked up on frozen/freezable and cupboard stuff as best I can. Click and collect booked at the supermarket each week, which we could probably persuade someone to collect if we couldn't. Turkey getting delivered from the butcher. Aldi and Co-op will deliver through Deliveroo. And I've got a list of all local veg deliveries just in case we need them. We don't get Amazon Fresh round here, but I think I've got all bases covered.

RayOfSunshine2013 · 10/12/2020 14:09

I would still go. However if you block the test and trace number and don't get a test, do you really have Covid?

EssexLioness · 10/12/2020 14:24

We are isolating at the mo following my husband’s discharge from hospital. I bought most things weeks ago and have prepped veg etc. To be honest I am not even sure if we will be having Christmas Dinnr or any of the nice food bits as my husband is on a restricted diet and may still not be up to eating properly by then. However, if we are, we will absolutely not be breaking any rules, we will make do with whatever bits we already have in the house. We will be out of isolation 4 days before Christmas but that is a manic week for my work and I will not be going to the shops then. No doubt people will be breaking isolation but there will always be selfish people in the world. I am just grateful to have my husband alive and at home for Christmas, particularly when so many people have lost loved ones this year

canigooutyet · 10/12/2020 14:38

I have just been put back into indefinite isolation because after another emergency hospital visit, another 4 things found including yet another fucking rare disease. Think I might start charging now for all the bits and pieces of me that regularly bloody feature in medical journals, teaching and more lol.

Anyway, ignore the meme rant. Erm, thankfully I avoid supermarkets anyway since the introduction of home delivery, and I've got the normal. slots already booked. We are always uber organised here from around October, so things can seamlessly carry on. And since getting caught out back in March, someone makes sure those slots are booked.
