Is it “jab” or “jag” ?

I always said jab but notice people occasionally saying jag. At first I thought these people had got it “wrong” accidentally but I hear the newsreaders seem to switch between jab and jag. Is it a regional thing?

I do realise there are more important issues to be discussing today !

I have only ever heard of jag in reference to the car. 😊

Morghulis · 08/12/2020 15:04

Jag is also a verb in Scotland that has a similar meaning to “stab” eg if a label on your clothing is digging into your skin you could say “the label on this jumper is jagging me” or “stop jagging me with your elbows”.

Jab is the same in this context though - 'I'm going to the doctors for a jab' ' hey doctor stop jabbing me with that needle'

midnightstar66 · 08/12/2020 15:09

Jag is also an adjective though 'that holly is jaggy' I'm not sure that jab is?

Mochudubh · 08/12/2020 15:50

We also call gorse bushes "whins". Whins are very jaggy bushes.

@burritofan

Me, faux-innocently dropping a bomb into the thread: Now, is it jab or jag with a short A like bath, or a long A like barth?

Next poster, disingenuously: What? There’s no R in bath, unless you’re a pirate.

Know-it-all, loftily: There are rhotic and non-rhotic accents

Next poster, rudely: This post has been removed by MNHQ

Have you been on Mumsnet a long time, by any chance?

Jab

MockneyReject · 08/12/2020 17:18

'No-one is punched by a needle'

But surely that's exactly what a needle does? Punches holes?

Changethetoner · 08/12/2020 17:24

Jesus wore a "jaggy bunnet" (bonnet) ie a crown of thorns. (Scots).

Changethetoner · 08/12/2020 17:25

In Liverpool, babies don't get jabs or jags, they get their needles.

Covidnomore · 08/12/2020 17:44

You get a jag an the arm unless you have a stookie on.

Never heard the word Bunker used (except underground). Do like a wee bridie though

Ah yes, I can actually hear that in my Liverpudlian friends accent 😆

DrMadelineMaxwell · 08/12/2020 18:15

Every day's a school day.
Jag means a sharp projection (I just googled the meaning).

North Wales here and it's always jab for an injection.

I was going to say I'd never heard jag in terms of something sharp. I have heard it used to describe an uncontrollable urge, like a crying jag or a coughing jag. But that's unrelated.

Apparently this was debated 10 years ago on here too.

It's funny, in Canada we say "shot", as in flu shot.

MorrisZapp · 08/12/2020 19:32

My Aberdonian dad confirms that in the shire, kids get jabs. Not only that, but thistles are jabby, not jaggy.

I had no idea! It's like I never knew him at all 😂

NuniaBeeswax · 08/12/2020 19:43

Always knew they were weirdos up that way. ;)

Lyricallie · 08/12/2020 19:50

Another Glaswegian checking in. Definitely a jag. When I was working in London I had to deal with them being like "oh haha you mean jab." And don't even get me started on "juice" we I would turn up with a can of coke. "Oh haha that's not juice, you're so silly." I used to go find the one other Scot in the building who would understand my plight.

Bloodypunkrockers · 08/12/2020 20:02

I'm fondly remembering S1 and S2 when we had to go to matrons room and queue for our jags

scottishGirl · 05/02/2021 22:10

I'm from Aberdeenshire. Just did a poll on this on my Instagram stories 😂
65 voted jab
12 Jag
Most people who voted are from the Aberdeenshire area so I'm afraid that commenters saying all Scots say Jag are wrong! Can honestly say id never heard jag until recently. However I do say "jaggy nettle" so it does make sense to me and don't know why we don't say it 😂🤷‍♀️

Branleuse · 05/02/2021 22:11

My scottish family say Jag. My English family say Jab.

InterfectoremVulpes · 05/02/2021 22:17

Jaggy bunnet

2X4B523P · 05/02/2021 23:21

My Jag has a big bonnet.
