Felt so emotional watching the video of the 90 year old lady receiving the first vaccine this morning bless her. Im not usually soppy at all but it really got me. Pray that things are now changing for the better x

My 16 year old son told me that watching it gives him hope for the future.

Mrsjayy · 08/12/2020 09:55

He is right comefromaway it's moving in the right direction.

WanderingMilly · 08/12/2020 09:57

Sorry but can't agree with all this weird emotion. Yes, it's great, it's a vaccine, people need it.

But hey ho, we're getting on with it, most of us will wait rather a long while before we get called. The hype on BBC news this morning was so awful I had to turn it off, with news commentators telling us (very carefully, as though we were 5 years old) that this was only the first shot and we will all need two injections etc. etc. I assume the hype is to make it look good and positive, thus persuading the anti-vaxxers and doubtfuls to go ahead and have it.

In the meantime, life just continues. Can't get over-involved in all this stuff....

lurker101 · 08/12/2020 10:03

@WanderingMilly I think a lot of the optimism comes from the fact that once a lot of the vulnerable are vaccinated, the rest of us can “crack on” and don’t need to wait for however long it takes for us to be vaccinated, restrictions can be eased, as although it will still circulate, it will be circulating amongst people that may be ill for a week, but are not expected to end up in hospital/dead

It was wonderful to watch, lovely to think we are on the road to recovery.

FourTeaFallOut · 08/12/2020 10:17

It's brilliant. Such a hopeful day after such a hard year. Wonderful.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/12/2020 10:19

I have a ninety year old cousin and I am hoping he is given the vaccine fairly soon as I have been so worried about him catching Covid.

ClaireP20 · 08/12/2020 10:19

I cried too! Even Nick Hancock did on tv, and so did my hubby...arh, lovely thing wasn't it x

janetmendoza · 08/12/2020 10:22

Margaret was attractive, articulate and intelligent at 91 and yet loads of people on here seem to think everyone over 70 is at deaths door and more than ready to go! Well done Margaret for bashing a few stereotypes there. Very very pleased for you and may you be the first of many.

Ponoka7 · 08/12/2020 10:24

Can she spend Christmas with her family, without the second dose?

It's fantastic. I'll get the vaccine in the third phase, but it was a complete publicity stunt. Rolling out someone called William Shakespeare made it all theatrical. I'm not into the clapping. I've spent a lot of time in hospital on various wards and cared for older relatives on wards and the treatment of our elderly in hospital is still not good enough. It isn't always staffing issues.

Ponoka7 · 08/12/2020 10:26

"Margaret was attractive, articulate and intelligent at 91"

Yet some of the news reports took on a patronising tone and even the OP used 'bless her'.

I doubt anyone went trawling the electoral records for the perfectly named 90 year old to wheel them out of bed at 6am. He would have already been in hospital and fit the brief and why not. Adds a bit of jollity and gives everyone the chance to make a joke. I think it’s brilliant. Shame there didn’t happen to be a Winston Churchill in hospital this morning or a Charles Dickens or a Elizabeth Windsor 😁 Imagine them all lined up awaiting their jabs Grin

Margaret rocks!

heidihigh · 08/12/2020 10:36

I'm glad I'm not alone - I welled up at the footage of her being clapped by the nursing staff this morning too. It finally feels like some hope in what has been a very dark and awful year for many. Xmas Grin

Yes it was a publicity stunt but right now a stunt which makes people more likely to want to get vaccinated is likely to save many lives, so I am all for it.

I bet the nurse doing the jab was relieved when it was over. The world's media watching your every move. I realise it's a routine thing, but it's not routine to have a bank of cameras point at you whilst you do it! Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 08/12/2020 10:47

Didn’t betray a hint of nerves though, did she? Well done her!

Mrsjayy · 08/12/2020 11:29

Nope but I guess at 91 nothing fazes. You Smile

BlackeyedSusan · 08/12/2020 11:35

Fitting it should be a Covkid getting Covid vaccine.

ConcernedAuntie · 08/12/2020 16:18

@Bathroom12345

It was lovely. I know its going to take a while but we have made a start. I have to say though that there are some moaners both on MN's and beyond. I dont know if its for political reasons, they like the current restrictions, they dont believe in vaccines etc.

I went to school many many years ago with a young chap who had calipers. He had caught polio and other children would tease him. I have never forgotton him dragging his leg across the playground.

And as for the people who want to see how it affects others is shocking esepcailly if they are in the medical profession. Is there really something they dont know!

Yes it is indeed great to know that we have made a start. Most sensible people know it is going to take a while. But, a start has been made. Some peope can't help but moan though.

Re your comment about the young man wth calipers, we had a boy at our school the same. He was unable to join in with so many activities which was so sad.

It also reminded me of my friends sister who wouldn't have her children immunised because, "she always made sure they had their vitamins, fresh fruit and veg and she believed them to have excellent immune systems". Her daughter contract measles and is now profoundly deaf as result. She no longer has contact with her mother because she cannot believe her mum could have prevented her life long disability but refused a vaccine. Very sad.

I would have been shaking!!! I hate to be negative, but as a fellow HCP, I was a bit horrified at her lack of PPE (gloves/apron). I wondered had they rushed her or something.

Otherwise, yes I was emotional too Grin

Lurkingforawhile · 08/12/2020 17:03

I agree, it was the clapping from staff as she came back into the ward that got me. We all need a bit of hope to get through what could be a tough few months and thats what it represents for me. I have a chronic lung condition caused by not being vaccinated. I cannot wait and may cry when I get mine!
