Vaccine for thyroxine takers

Lizbiz89 · 07/12/2020 15:37

Just wondering if anyone knows what the general consensus is for thyroxine takers and the Covid vaccine? I had a total thyroidectomy 7 years ago due to a cancer scare which turned out to be just for precautionary measures. Apart from that fit and healthy. However I wouldn't want to take something that would react badly with the medication I'm on. Is anyone else in the same position? I'm only 31 so I doubt I'll get it in hurry anyway but it would be good to know.

Really useful thread, thanks OP for posting and others who have received their first jab to post also.

I, for one, will be hot footing it to my GP or vaccination centre as soon as I am asked.

It’s one of the least discussed auto-immune diseases in regards severity of illness, potential for long-COVID, as others say, very little out there on it.

I’ve been presuming/hoping this is because there’s not been a lot of reported cases from severe, hospitalised patients with Hashimitos/Graves etc?

But then everything is still so uncertain TBF and lots more other life CEV conditions ahead of us thyroid folk in the waiting list.

I have my own doubts I’d fare well if infected, but that may just be my totally crap immune system in general and past track record with flu-induced pneumonia, aside from my hypothyroid condition. Will stay tuned for more posts on this subject 🙏🏻

Stay safe everyone

Generally speaking any medication which just replaces something which you should have anyway shouldn’t cause any issues. I am on all kinds of medication as my pituitary gland doesn’t work (HRT, thyroxine, hydrocortisone tablets and so on) and my specialist tells me there are no issues with me having the vaccine.

@SnowmanDrinkingSnowballs

Does anyone know if having thyroid issues put us on the vulnerable list who get the vaccine? I have flu jab so maybe.
I’ve not seen thyroid problems being anywhere on the vulnerable list.

Excellent thread, thanks everyone. Another Hashimoto here on levothyroxine so this has put my mind at rest Xmas Smile

I don't think so. My mum wasn't classed as vulnerable, it's just her age (82) that gets her higher up the list. Even my slightly younger dad who has Parkinsons and has been shielding all year has to wait his turn as he's in the next age group down.

Just to point out to anyone who doesn't know, you can be hypothyroid without having autoimmunity. I'm both, I have Hashi's and a number of other issues (allergies) which makes me want to avoid the mRNA vaccine for the time being. It's the autoimmunity and allergies that give me pause, not taking thyroid hormone.

Hypothyroidism is generally almost ignored as if it doesn't exist so no, we're not on the vulnerable list. I think mainly because doctors assume once you are on Levothyroxine you are then 'fine'. Sadly this isn't always true, not all of us get on well with Levo.

Anyway for me the question to have or not have the vaccine is an academic one at the moment as I'm well down the list!

SnowmanDrinkingSnowballs · 23/12/2020 15:15

So looks like it doesn’t give us the right to the covid vaccine, at least we get free prescriptions!

I have Hashimotos, Addisons and Reynauds along with asthma. I get the flu jab every year for asthma. I am very desperate for the vaccine as being 50, autoimmune and menopausal working in a crowded classroom all day in tier 4 is actually pretty horrible. France are vaccinating their vulnerable teachers. We are just told to get on with it with nary a facemask in sight.

I wouldn't trust the British Thyroid Association as far as I could throw them. They literally do nothing to advocate for patints and mostly see thyroid issues as hysterical, in my experience. Then again, so did most of my endocrinologists. Until finally after 10 years one gave in and gave me T3 as well. I actually got an apology on my next visit.

Waking this thread up as I just got called up for vaccination and I'm only late 40s. Presuming it's hypothyroidism / levothyroxine that got me on the list. Checked with a friend in her early 40s with similar and she's just also been called up. And yet I can't find and link or reason re specific vulnerability besides perhaps it ticking a general box on having a chronic condition with lifelong meds, albeit in my case relatively light. Might anyone know more?

This is interesting as I have an under active thyroid late 40's heard nothing though x
Amammai · 16/02/2021 21:59

My mother takes this medication (and has done for over 30 years.) She had her first dose of the vaccine last week. All fine.

Dolciedolly · 16/02/2021 22:47

Wonder if I will be called up been taking them 7 years 😬

QueenPaw · 17/02/2021 00:55

I have hashimotos (and about 4 other autoimmune conditions), had my vaccine and all fine apart from standard side effects. Felt normal 24hrs later

Griffo123 · 17/02/2021 01:03

I take levothyroxine snd have had the Oxford Covid vaccination without any side effects at all

borntobequiet · 17/02/2021 06:15

I’ve been on thyroxine for 20+ years and had the vaccine last week with no ill effects. TBH it didn’t even cross my mind as a problem because I have the flu vaccine every year and have had the pneumonia vaccine.
It’s a replacement for what the body should produce naturally so I don’t see how or why it could be a problem.

CrunchyCarrot · 17/02/2021 06:32

I now know 2 people who are hypo with Hashi's and have had or more accurately are currently suffering from having Covid (for 2-3 months after becoming ill). Both have reported having a recurrence of hypo symptoms, even though before getting Covid they were doing fine and were well-medicated. It seems Covid can throw you back into hypothyroidism (hopefully only temporarily).

I also know a number of hypo/Hashi's people who've now had the jab and they have only had fairly minor side effects.

CrunchyCarrot · 17/02/2021 06:34

Having hypothyroidism or Hashi's or Graves' will not put you on the vulnerable list. Whether that's right or wrong, I think is up for debate and it does (in my opinion) depend on how well-medicated you are.

flapjackfairy · 17/02/2021 06:34

My husband is on thyroxine and had it last week. No problems at all .

faerveren · 17/02/2021 07:07

Gosh I have been on Thyroxine for years after mine was destroyed. I've had the vaccine and had to write my medication on the form. I have the flu jab every year, no problems, no one has ever mentioned it and I have never thought to ask.

It's not on the vulnerable list, unless there are complications, once it's controlled I dont think it lowers your immunity.
