Are you taking your dc out of school early for Christmas?

Mine officially finish on the 18th but I'm taking them out on the 11th to protect myself
(Clinically extremely vulnerable) and my elderly mum who is with us over Christmas. There have been 7 cases in ds's relatively small primary in the last week and at dds' secondary not a week goes by without a year having to isolate. It's been a shit year for everyone and Christmas is the one thing we've had to look forward to. We are in tier 3.
Anyone else doing the same?

Definitely not.

BiddyPop · 07/12/2020 11:09

No, DD's school finishes on 22nd but they are doing 21st and 22nd as a test of remote capability so school from home after 18th. But we are not finishing early. We will go to visit family after 25th, but DD is in an exam year and they did lose a lot earlier in the year so she needs it.

Incrediblehulky · 07/12/2020 11:14

Yes I'm definitely doing this. I want to see my parents this Christmas and if I take the kids out of school a week early we'll be able to isolate for 14 days before we see them. It won't be risk free but will minimise the risk as much as possible.

VanityWitch · 07/12/2020 11:26

No, we are not doing that, but then we are not vulnerable.

Our only Christmas guest this year is in her thirties, is a doctor and has already had it.

If we were seeing anyone clinically vulnerable, yes, I would do this in a heartbeat. DC is year one, so I honestly don't see how an extra week of home learning would kill her education! But maybe if she was doing A level chemistry and needed to do lab work or something.

I don't think it's wrong to do it basically, but we don't feel as if we need to.

LadyCatStark · 07/12/2020 13:17

No and I sincerely hope that those that do aren’t expecting a) teachers to provide work for them for that week and b) aren’t expecting the rest of the class to wait for them to return before carrying on with the work.

Porcupineinwaiting · 07/12/2020 13:21

Dont worry @LadyCatStark I'm expecting neither of those things.

Porcupineinwaiting · 07/12/2020 13:22

And tbf very little of the former and none of the latter happened when the school told them to self isolate previously.

PurpleWave · 07/12/2020 13:38

Yes, mine will be finishing on the 11th so that we can visit my elderly parents.

Popfan · 07/12/2020 14:18

I'm considering it and I never thought I'd say that! Not because we are visiting elderly relatives, we've decided not to do that anyway but because I don't want him sent home to self isolate and then be stuck in the house for the whole of the holidays.

Tinselandbaubauls · 07/12/2020 14:39

No, they’re education has been damaged enough.

Literallynoidea · 07/12/2020 14:40

No way

maggiemuff · 07/12/2020 14:44

Definitely not. Enough school has been missed this year.

WineNotTheLabel · 07/12/2020 14:47

Don't know. My mum died earlier this year and my dad is on his own in a different city.
I saw him for a few hours in very short socially distances visits in Feb and Sept.

Unless we all can there is no point. I am WFH 100% and will be until Feb/Mar 21 at the earliest.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 07/12/2020 15:00

Dd's primary school has shut down for this week, only classes not been told to isolate so that is us until after the new year now. Actually am quite pleased cos it has taken the decision away from me although obviously hope the people who have got it in our school are ok.

Fishfingersandwichplease · 07/12/2020 15:02

Only 2 classes that was meant to say

mistermagpie · 07/12/2020 15:03

No. DS is only P1 but we have already had to have one period of isolation and he's desperate to go back. It wouldn't be worth it anyway unless I was was willing to take my other two out of nursery, which I am not because I have to work and can't look after three children at the same time.

bonbonours · 07/12/2020 15:04

Yes in the hope we can have a normal Xmas with my mum we're isolating from 11th.

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 07/12/2020 15:05

Yes

Uhtredswoman · 07/12/2020 15:07

No!! I am CEV and I am required to be at work!!

bellsbuss · 07/12/2020 15:07

Yes as I am to protect our parents.

Atrixie · 07/12/2020 15:10

Absolutely not

Uhtredswoman · 07/12/2020 15:14

I'm a teacher and I know my child has missed enough school, so I'm willing to work so others don't miss out on any more!!

Sorry for the rant! Can you tell I feel passionately about this? 😂😂

Fortyfifty · 07/12/2020 15:39

No. We're not seeing family this Christmas. DH is a teacher and there's not enough time between him finishing and Christmas day to be risk free, also , none of us would want to stay in for 2 weeks when we can wait a few months more and hopefully see grandparents when they are vaccinated.

Fortunately we've managed to see both sets of parents in recent months and none are in the kind of poor health that makes a Christmas visit vital. I can understand others who might be in a different position.

Don't ask your teachers to set work though.

Someonesayroadtrip · 07/12/2020 15:43

We are currently isolating until text Monday -Wednesday (depending which track and trace person you speak to. So mine won't go back now. My husband has Covid and it's frustrating as we have been so careful. I think some of my children's classes are still off and so no, I'm not putting them back in. We are in Wales, our cases are horrific, of the classes that remain in (3 are out) most of the classes are now taught by TAs as no staff, it's just horrific here.

Thatwentbadly · 07/12/2020 15:50

No my DH is ECV asp we won’t be bubbling with anyone. The last week of term is when the kids have their party and all the Christmas activities.
