Christmas week travelling question

So the 5 day window is 23rd to 27th. What are the legalities on travelling 22nd evening? I just feel that the roads will be rammed on the 23rd.

Legally I reckon you're alright if you don't spend time indoors with the relatives until 23rd.

Coasterfan · 06/12/2020 17:49

Travelling between tiers isn’t illegal just unadvisable so technically you can travel when you like.

Racoonworld · 06/12/2020 17:53

You can travel when you like but can’t stay with people indoors until the 23rd

providentglue · 06/12/2020 17:58

Which country?

Hapixmas · 06/12/2020 18:18

Thanks all. This would be England to England. I was thinking of leaving about 4pm and can take anywhere from 4-5 hours probably more if everyone travelling together.

You're fine to travel anywhere within England on any day. You would be breaking the law if you stay in another person's house that night, but the likelihood of anyone ever finding out (or caring) is around zero.

Your plan sounds sensible. Masses of people travelling on one day is going to create more problems for the NHS than people taking journeys across several days.

Hapixmas · 06/12/2020 18:31

Thanks @Hayeahnobut I think I will go ahead with it. I just find it hilarious that I could arrive at their house at say, 9pm. And it be illegal. But 3 hours later at midnight it is within the law. I know they have to draw the line somewhere but the thought of everyone in those service stations on the 23rd is quite scary.

We'll be arriving at my parents about 11pm on the 22nd. If anyone wants to fine me for arriving an hour early, crack on.

RaggieDolls · 06/12/2020 20:52

I've been thinking this through too. I genuinely think it will be very busy regardless of when you go. We are going after lunch on 23rd as I need to work the morning.

HopeAndDriftWood · 06/12/2020 20:54

I suspect Monday to Thursday will all be pretty awful, to be honest. Everyone is travelling when it suits them... maybe that will mean the 23rd isn’t so bad.

Frazzled2207 · 06/12/2020 20:55

I was also thinking this. Might just go late on 22nd. Pretty sure I won’t be the only one.

Returnofthemaccys · 06/12/2020 22:55

The travel isn't an issue. It's the staying with people indoors that's not allowed till 23rd.

StealthPolarBear · 06/12/2020 23:23

People are saying travelling is OK but aren't we not meant to travel out of tier 3 areas unless it's essential?

Returnofthemaccys · 06/12/2020 23:32

@StealthPolarBear That's the guidance, yes. But it's not the law so you can travel. However it is against the law to mix indoors until 23rd (when Covid magically disappears for the festive season... ) So even if you travel you need to stay somewhere self-contained with just you or your own household until 23rd.

Mumblechum0 · 06/12/2020 23:35

Seriously doubt the police are going to be pulling anyone over on the afternoon of the 22nd.
