Central London yesterday

I saw photos of scenes in central London yesterday- Regent's Street and outside Harrods Shock
I was gobsmacked.
Unbelievable to think that is acceptable when so many are sick and dying of Covid19.
Sad
Front line workers are putting their lives on the line.

Why in the name of everything would people wear masks on Snowdon?!

lynsey91 · 06/12/2020 18:25

Well if people want to be stupid and selfish and they obviously do then let them get on with it. I certainly won't have any sympathy if they get covid.

It is very unfair though on our doctors, nurses and the NHS in general. Why the hell should they be put under pressure because people can't be bothered to be sensible.

Jourdain11 · 06/12/2020 18:29

Why would people wear masks outside on Oxford St come to that? It's cold enough that they would get soggy from your breath and that makes them less effective, no?

I've been to the shops with DD today. It was busy, but people were making efforts to step aside on the pavement and not brush into you. The shops had queuing and one way systems in place. I didn't see anyone not wearing masks inside the stores. It all seemed perfectly okay and sensible.

This too.

I’m not advocating masks outside anywhere.

I'm afraid I am going to be rude now. Don't be so flippin' sanctimonious! Some people went to the shops - it's allowed. I'm sure that there were plenty of doctors and nurses who went to the shops this weekend, too. I'm so sick of people who keep saying, "I went to the shops/the park/Snowdon and there were so many selfish people there." Newsflash: they were there too!

Going to the shops is permitted. Maybe a minority of people were not being 'sensible' but I'm sure most were. Oh, and do NHS workers not also go shopping every now and then?

lynsey91 · 06/12/2020 18:49

@Jourdain11 I didn't go to the shops nor will I be going. Some of us are being sensible.

Me and DH are having our first ever Christmas at home just the two of us in 40 years of marriage. I have never had a Christmas in my 66 years not spent with my parents.

We are sad about it but we think it is the safest and most sensible thing to do. Shame so many others either don't bother thinking or just don't care

sashagabadon · 06/12/2020 18:57

I had a lovely day Xmas shopping up in central London. Busy but I’ve seen worse.

Going to the shops is permitted and also helps the economy. You may think you win smug points by shutting yourself up at home, but there's nothing especially 'sensible' about it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 06/12/2020 19:01

@lynsey91 again, the assumption that none of the people there are NHS workers. My mum is a frontline hospital worker and she went to the shops yesterday, with the hours she works it was her only chance to shop.

tootyfruitypickle · 06/12/2020 19:16

Agree with PP this was a planned event, it wasn’t people out shopping.

AcornAutumn · 06/12/2020 19:28

Reports now saying Harrods was targeted by a large group, which makes more sense.

Not that people would target a shop, but I just didn’t think harrods would be that mobbed and it sounds like the aim was to cause trouble.

Of course

One of mum’s hospital worker friends was at the Debenhams fire sale on Wednesday as that was her day off.

TheJunctionBaby · 06/12/2020 19:36

@lynsey91 have a medal

LightasaBreeze · 06/12/2020 19:44

Blimey, masks on Snowden and people shouldn't go shopping because of poor NHS workers. These covid threads are quite laughable really.

LightasaBreeze · 06/12/2020 19:47

Snowdon

Jourdain11 · 06/12/2020 19:52

There's nothing not sensible about going to the shops. And that is without even going into the issue of the poor staff and business owners, who would have no jobs or income if people stayed away.

Is it really likely that you pass on Covid by passing briefly by some people inside or outside a store? I can't imagine so. Of course the tube is another matter, but in fact the transport is still quiet.

Actually, I think plenty NHS staff or teachers may be more relaxed about being out and about than others - since they've been going about for work purposes in any case and have never been in such "lockdown" mode as others.

bigsmokeatchristmas · 06/12/2020 19:56

I assumed this thread was going to be about how quiet it was. We queued for a few shops which were then really quiet when we went in as they were very careful about numbers. Covent garden was not busy at all during the day. Musuem we visited wasn't busy (sadly wasn't much fun either with Covid measures). The only place that was busy was nighttime on the Southbank with lots of milling and drinking but still fairly easy to distance with a bit of effort.

LaceyBetty · 06/12/2020 19:58

People are doing what we've been told we can do. What is wrong with that?! Why shouldn't we?
