Ridiculous Tier Rules

Back to our usual Saturday afternoon pub today, where I have two drinks and my husband has one pint. Obviously we had to have a meal in order to do that, which we normally wouldn't do. The pub is part of a chain, and we were told that another pub we frequent (the same chain) had struggled to open up after the latest lockdown, because the building is in tier 2 but their carpark is designated as being in tier 3 (East Yorkshire). What the F*? Also, long ago, our council area was West Riding, until boundaries were changed. If that was the case today we woudn't be able to drive 5 minutes into town, or even go to our local supermarket.

So your objection seems to be mainly anger at the idea that regions should have boundaries, if those boundaries are physically located in places that people sometimes are.

Hmm

The line has to fall somewhere and it will lead to anomalies. Unless the government are going say all of East Yorkshire is in Tier 3 except the Dog & Duck car park, I don't really see a way round it.

sunnyday1976 · 05/12/2020 23:48

Think I know the pub. Drove past it earlier - the car park was v quiet!! It is weird but the division has to go somewhere.

The BBC news website made a big thing of the summit of Roseberry Topping being in Tier 2 (North Yorkshire) so people in Tier 3 (Redcar and Cleveland couldn't climb to the top, which the police had never said.

I have been going back and forth frequently between Tiers 2 and 3 (previously 1 and 2) visiting my vulnerable parents. No-one has attempted to stop me and I haven't seen any border police.

The police however were this morning checking people in the Tier 2 queue for a kiosk selling coffee and cake were suitably distanced (they were) and during the second lockdown were always in our local national park checking cyclists in groups of more than two were from the same household...

There's a street near us where one side is tier 2 and the other side is tier 3!

ferretface · 06/12/2020 00:08

I've been going between tier 3 and tier 2 also as that's where our local supermarket is (we are right on the London/Kent border). Also to go for a run because that's the only route with street lighting. Not being able to leave for any reason is not a thing.

SingANewSongChickenTikka · 06/12/2020 06:58

Well the boundaries have to be somewhere.
You can cross tiers though so wouldn’t have had any idea driving across tiers to your local supermarket anyway.

Mindymomo · 06/12/2020 07:32

Be thankful that you can eat out. We’ve had to shield since March and cases where we live are rising. Our local restaurants are doing takeaways, but it’s not the same as being waited on.

SakiSiam · 06/12/2020 19:58

No, I'm not angry 'that regions should have boundaries', as that's always been the case. I'm not angry, full-stop. What I am is bewildered by the constantly fluctuating rules, which are not consistent across the regions, so it's difficult to know where you stand, even within your own tier. Yesterday we had to order our meal before we could order our drinks; today we could order our drinks and peruse the menu, then order, in a different local bar. When so many rules are being brought in which allow the state to interfere in private life (for a specific reason), there needs to be some sort of consistency, within the tiers at least. I'm fine with following the rules, but I want to know the specifics, not not know from one day to the next where I stand depending which of the square feet I'm standing in.

sunnyday1976 - was it Stamford Bridge by any chance?

@SakiSiam that's the one!!

SlippersForFlippers · 06/12/2020 21:00

There's a town near here with half in tier 2 and half in tier 3.

SlippersForFlippers · 06/12/2020 21:01

Was meant to also say the village shop is on the tier 2 side.

SakiSiam · 07/12/2020 18:55

@sunnyday1976 > We go there because they let us book a specific table where our rescue greyhound feels safe - they know him.
