Covid vs Garden Variety Cold

DC (13) tested this afternoon. Sore throat started Thursday evening, poorly enough yesterday to be off school with the sore throat and a very occasional cough. No fever.

Throat better today but coughing more and more as the day went on so got him tested for Covid at 4pm.

This evening his cough has got even worse but it sounds chesty and he's also suddenly absolutely full of snot, sneezing, and blowing his nose.

It's a common cold, right?

We'll be isolating as a family at home regardless but I hope to god the negative result comes though quicker than the 96 hours his brother's took in September.

Fretting I tested too quickly as both DH and I will get grief if we are off work for 4 days waiting for test results again 😓

Pretty much impossible to tell if it's Covid or a common cold without the Covid results back. Interestingly both the common cold and covid are caused by a corona virus.

Porcupineinwaiting · 05/12/2020 20:51

Could be either and testing is the only way to know so you made the right decision to test. Now just hang tight until you get the result back.

purpleme12 · 05/12/2020 20:54

My test result took just 18 hours to come back

lljkk · 05/12/2020 20:54

90% chance it's a cold. But you can't act like you know it's a cold until you know it's just a cold.

luckylavender · 05/12/2020 21:03

I thought snot meant it wasn't Covid

Porcupineinwaiting · 05/12/2020 21:11

@luckylavender not necessarily. It's most common for adults to have no snot and a dry cough but I've also heard of people who've almost drowned in their own mucus. With kids symptoms are very often wet and snotty.

luckylavender · 05/12/2020 21:13

Interesting, thank yip

luckylavender · 05/12/2020 21:13

You

EasterIssland · 05/12/2020 21:15

I tested at 11am and my results came at 1am. You should have them back before Monday and if not there is a number to call to

luckylavender · 05/12/2020 21:24

I remembered this that the Government issued a few months ago

More than likely a cold but best to make sure
Last week my DDs results from a drive through test took 30 hours to come through

Yeah. I actually enjoy the sarcasm though, as you are of course right. Damn Coronaviruses.

I was snotty with a positive I’m afraid and also sneezed a few times a day which really surprised me.
Good call to get the test anyway. Smile Hope it’s just a cold.

raviolidreaming · 05/12/2020 21:49

This is incorrect. Most common colds are caused by rhinoviruses.

Oh.

Well that's taken the wind from my sails a bit.

I am nearing the end of a 10 day isolation for a positive Covid test. I started with a cough and sore throat. Moved onto aches and pains, followed by a dreadful head cold with a blocked, then runny nose plus sneezing and coughing. I have now lost my sense of smell and taste. However no temperature.

GreyishDays · 06/12/2020 09:07

@raviolidreaming

Interestingly both the common cold and covid are caused by a corona virus

This is incorrect. Most common colds are caused by rhinoviruses.

The internet says it’s both:

Rhinovirus. This bunch is most active in early fall, spring, and summer. They cause 10%-40% of colds. You'll feel plenty miserable when you catch one, but the good news is they rarely make you seriously sick.

Coronavirus. These tend to do their dirty work in the winter and early spring. The coronavirus is the cause of about 20% of colds. There are more than 30 kinds, but only three or four affect people.

There is a third type too.

GreyishDays · 06/12/2020 09:09

@luckylavender

I wonder if that was related to the cases they’d found in March and April, when it was only the serious ones that were being diagnosed. In children they are more finding snottiness now.
GreyishDays · 06/12/2020 09:19

WhiteFeather it’s still much more likely to be just a cold, just good to be prepared for a small chance that it’s not.

starrynight19 · 06/12/2020 11:10

I also tested positive with a full head cold as one of my first symptoms still full of it a week on.

luckylavender · 06/12/2020 12:46

@GreyishDays - that release dates from September

GreyishDays · 06/12/2020 12:55

Oh, well I don’t know why they’re saying that then.

Interestingly even the WHO are releasing different symptoms summaries, I think it’s a bit of a mess.

WhiteFeatherFairy · 06/12/2020 13:01

Negative result back now so mystery solved!
