Just reading this...will lives return to normal after the vaccine? BBC- No - vaccine plus (vaccine plus the other stuff basically). I thought it was meant to be more about personal responsibility come the Spring.

A month or two ago they were talking about learning to live with it...

Nobody really knows. That article is just the opinion of a few people. Sure, they maybe 'experts' but not all experts agree, especially regarding a situation constantly in flux.

It also says:

"Prof Ghani agrees and estimates it will take two more years to "to get the whole world back to normal", but with the process likely to be quicker for high-income countries like the UK."

I don't understand why ppl don't grasp the basics. Covid kills, in the main, the over 80's. Once we get them vaccinated the death and hospitalisation rates will drop off a cliff, they won't be worried about the NHS being overwhelmed and life can return to normal as we move down the age groups. We'll probably never both vaccinating the under 50's. But it's not the done thing to point out COVID is an old person's illness.

Orangeblossom77777 · 05/12/2020 17:31

I do grasp that, I just am a little confused by all this about returning to normal etc

Good luck anyone who expects that to happen. I’m going back to normal as soon as the vulnerable are vaccinated. I’m not putting my life on hold for the non vulnerable.

That said - no one on my covid unit is elderly. They're all 35-70 and not all have any other conditions. Our longest vented patients are in 30-45 age bracket. They won't die (most likely) but they are overwhelming our hospital because of how long they need to stay and how sick they are.

I hope the vaccine takes some of the vulnerability out the equation but I'm not convinced the hospital surge will reduce purely with the elderly being vaccinated only.

This

JVT and Scottish Health secretary have said once over 80s are vaccinated hospitalisations and deaths should reduce by 99%

Why on Earth would we need restrictions for that level of hospitalisations and deaths?

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 05/12/2020 22:37

‘JVT and Scottish Health secretary have said once over 80s are vaccinated hospitalisations and deaths should reduce by 99%‘

No, the over 50s. He said the first wave of vaccinations by which he meant everyone on the priority lists that they hope to have done before Easter, so everyone over 50, NHS workers and people of all ages who are vulnerable due to health conditions.

onedayinthefuture · 05/12/2020 23:20

Vaccine or no vaccine life will go back to normal, this way of life is NOT sustainable.

My mistake, I thought Jeane Freeman said the over 80s, sorry

The last I heard was from Hancock to the Select Committee saying that it would be a change to focus on personal responsibility in the Spring- I thought around March.

ICNARC report (1Sept-4 December, UK-not-Scotland) says...

Of those admitted to Critical care, 75% are age 53+ (Table 1)
Of those invasively ventilated soon after admission, 75% are age 53+ (Table 4)

The over 80s aren't often ventilated (awful experience with poor prognosis for them), so can't use that statistic on its own.

The chronic-underlying conditions list seems to only be for those with very severe co-morbidities. But (I think) most of the ICNARC patients seem to have had a recent (non-covid) hospital admission of at least a few days, so the group has a lot of underlying conditions.
