Is anyone else’s dc opting out if activities rather than wear a mask?

DS has not got used to masks, hates them. Has tried them on and off but is resolute. He’ll cycle 4 miles in rain before wearing one on the bus. When he has tried he seems to freeze up, for example at horse riding he gave a few lessons a ago and was half-frozen and barely directed the horse, had to be got off (we switched to a new Outdoor centre in the end but it’s ending next week).
Now Scouts are going back, he’s due to move up and he’s resolute he doesn’t want to go with a mask. I know it’s a choice, but I feel sad he’s going to drop out of something he loves. I’ve forced him to a few time’s with a mask to give it a go but he’s ended up withdrawn then outside stressed (he does generally have some sensory quirks, but is academic and has never needed support. Just occasional adaptation).
More and more places locally are going beyond the requirements for masks and insisting children wear them, plus he’s 11 soon anyway. I just worry about him as at the moment these activities are his only social contact with all the restrictions on.
I don’t really know what I’m saying- I’m just asking how others have dealt with this For their children. What have you done? I’ve been trying to get him used to them most the year now, tried many types and it feels like I’ve exhausted options. It feels like training a cat to walk on a lead. Though he’s silent you can see he’s frozen in anxious mode (normally he’s reasonably confident and social).
My younger two aren’t bothered by them at all.

Yep my teen has.
He now point blank refuses because it causes so much distress. Each time a bubble has to isolate he prays he's that bubble to not have to go to school and learn from home.

@carrieBlue my sons school have to be worn at all times except outdoors. Inc classes

CarrieBlue · 05/12/2020 20:34

@ImNotCutOutForThis - your DS goes to very sensible school!

CarrieBlue · 05/12/2020 20:35

@ImNotCutOutForThis - although I’m sorry he finds it difficult.

I wouldn't want my kids to do any activity where they have to be worn. My daughters gymnastics is mask free and swimming not back yet (goodness knows though..I can imagine with all this madness they could try and insist on masks in the water)! For my kids these activities are supposed to be fun and wouldn't be such in a mask.

I ride regularly and cannot imagine doing that with a mask on..one of the major pluses of the activity is to get fresh air not to breath in my own germs! I can sympathise with him..

Sorry, my bad, didn't realise I was the only one here with Google

The fact that there is no strong evidence either way and that the only proper randomised control trial to have been done shows no statistical significance IS significant. We're giving up huge amounts of freedom, children are choosing not to do hobbies they formerly loved, for basically nothing. There's literally no evidence that they work. As the OP said, we might as well be saying a prayer before entering a building.

Also worth adding: hospital PPE doesn't seem to be doing much to stop nosocomial spread of the virus.

I have, so I'm not surprised children have. I don't like wearing one (I have to at work), but obviously do where required. Just means I don't go to many places that require them.

I am opting out of shopping, doctors, hairdressers, anything that requires a mask.

My DD has been Bouldering since she was 7, and is now 13. Just before this latest lockdown the climbing centre said everyone had to wear a mask even on the walls. She has refused to go. It's an activity she loves but she just won't go if she has to wear a mask.

Fortunately her dance school isn't making them wear masks in the lesson, so she's still happy to go.
