Did I do the right thing?

I am my elderly mum's support bubble, she has a view health conditions that make her more vulnerable to coronavirus. I have tried to be really careful about limiting my social interaction with others to try and protect her. I work from home, get shops delivered etc. Today I went to the GP. There was a medical student sitting in who I said I was happy to examine me which I was. The risks seemed low as everyone was wearing masks etc. I happened to mention how good the student was to my sister, who is now furious with me. She says by allowing the student to sit in I have put my elderly mum at more risk than I needed to. Is she right?

The OP’s mum wasn’t at the appointment @eeeyoresmiles. Her sister’s got her knickers in a twist because she thinks that OP may have contracted COVID from this feckless med student and therefore pass it on to their mum.

Ah I missed that - it's still true though that there's no particular increased risk from the med student being in the room.

I don't think your sister is right and I think it's very unfair for her to put that pressure on you. I know it's an emotive and worrying time for everyone but you're doing your best and you don't need to carry her worry as your responsibility!

@MogsSitOnDogs

Obviously with another person in the room, there's additional risk. It just is, that's the fact if it. However, as you were all wearing masks the risk is small (depending on what he did too - check your feet (negligible), check your tonsils (more risk). But we need to enable MDF students to train where they can.

Tell your sister to wind her neck in. She's welcome to isolate for 14 days & move in with your mum if you're doing such a shit job of it. Rude ungrateful cow bag.

Well of course there is, anytime there's another person in the room there's increased risk & particularly if that person is close enough to examine you.

The additional risk is undeniable, but the overstated risk & shitty attitude of the OP's sister is just ridiculous.

@MogsSitOnDogs rationally there is very little additional risk as ppe was being worn and students still need to train. From the outside I can see this. However like your sister I am also very anxious about Covid and this is the type of thing I’d worry about if I was directly involved. I guess what I’m saying is try not to let her worry you and let it go over your head a bit as she’s anxious and when anxiety is high sometimes rationality goes out of the window and it is only with distance that it’s easier to be more rational about risk. It sounds like you’re doing an amazing job of caring for your Mum.
