Cough

I keep coughing but it’s sometimes dry, and sometimes phlegmy. I’ve been reading online and everything I’ve read says COVID cough is dry, and non-productive. I’m lying on the sofa and my chest feels a bit weird (I’m not usually a hypochondriac, but I’m a teacher in a special school. No masks or social distancing whatsoever!)

I have no other symptoms. My plan is to see how the cough pans out tonight. It’s not, is it?

I haven’t seen any NHS or government guidelines about a type of cough?

If you have a cough you have to test and isolate.

Frenchfancy · 03/12/2020 19:12

You need to test. Chest feels weird is a good description of what I had

whatswithtodaytoday · 03/12/2020 19:13

There are lots of people on the positive Covid test thread with a productive cough - you need a test.

BrutusMcDogface · 03/12/2020 19:20

I thought so. 😢 Frenchfancy- can you elaborate please? Thank you.

I would test and try not to worry Wink

Take it easy, keep warm and drink plenty ( of water 😁)

Take care.

Thank you ❤️

I would get a test as you have a new cough. For me the covid cough is definitely dry and in my chest if that makes sense , sounds hoarse.

Hope your negative.

Brighterthansunflowers · 03/12/2020 19:54

You need to test and isolate but do try not to panic. The vast majority of tests are still negative, there’s still the usual cough and cold viruses going around.

lovelemoncurd · 03/12/2020 19:57

It's a symptom therefore you get a test. This information is not new!

BrutusMcDogface · 03/12/2020 20:58

Thanks, lovelemoncurd Hmm

The cough is more in my throat, if that makes sense? I am worried as I have kids and a partner and lots of people at work I’d be letting down if we had to close our bubble (most notably the parents of my class, I think!)

But I do owe it to them to keep us all safe so I’ll call my school first thing and get a test.

I had a cough with phlegm and tested positive although I had other symptoms too. It’s a cough you can’t control. I would get tested just to be on the safe side

starrynight19 · 03/12/2020 21:04

The safest thing you can do for all of you is to get tested. Hopefully it’s just a day or two inconvenience until you get your result. If not then you aren’t infecting anyone else tomorrow whilst you find out.

Clearasmuddypuddles · 03/12/2020 21:06

You need to get a test regardless of the type of cough in your situation. You are in a high risk environment and have a new cough.

Timbucktime · 03/12/2020 21:10

The NHS website states
A new continuous cough. This means coughing a lot more than an hour or 3 or more coughing episodes in 24 hours.

BrutusMcDogface · 03/12/2020 21:35

Do you know, I’ve actually stopped coughing. It was on and off for more than an hour but nothing for a while now. Will see if I have any more episodes between now and 7am, but will probably still err on the side of caution re: testing.

I’m school SLT. You need to take a test and the rest of your household needs to isolate until you have a negative result. Don’t feel guilty about school. You need a test.

Lindy2 · 03/12/2020 21:56

You work in a school. Please be cautious and take a test so you know for sure what you have.
