I was in agreement about teachers being a priority and then the more I think about it, I think, why?
I work in childcare so am close contact to several families.
People work in supermarkets coming in to contact every day.
There are loads of close contact jobs! Hairdressers, nail technicians etc... teachers are very important, I agree, but NHS staff are the ones in guaranteed contact with covid patients (if on those wards) so I can see why the list is as it is. It won't be long anyway. And also, as each category is vaccinated, case numbers will be on the decrease so things will be getting better anyway.

Like I say, not a teacher bash, I think teachers are remarkable, and have lots in the family. I just think that they have to order it in some way.

I absolutely believe teachers and TAs should be right near the front of the vaccine queue. Not only are they highly vulnerable due to the level of exposure in their job, it is teaching and nursery workers in whom we place the care, education and mental development of our own children.

My daughter starts school in September and I do not want her to be taught by a scared, beaten and pissed off teacher. The scientists who created this vaccine could not have done so without their wonderful teachers. We need talented and happy teachers to inspire this generation's children to invent the next vaccinea for future pandemics.

Teachers and nursery staff play such a vital role in our children's whole future, yet with this, and the pay freeze, shows that this government, the media and even mumsnet - MUMS - do not give a shit about teachers, and therefore do not give a shit about children.

Pomegranatespompom · 02/12/2020 21:48

Don'y be ridiculous @IrisPurple It doesn't mean that at all, there are many vulnerable people who should be vaccinated first.

That’s the most ridiculous statement I have seen on here today, and there’s some strong competition.

@IrisPurple

The vaccine isn’t a reward for doing a worthy job (of which teaching and childcare is definitely one!). The data does not show a need to prioritise education settings before others. The reason health care and social care workers are prioritised is to reduce the risk to those they care for who are actually high risk (over 65 and medically vulnerable etc).

JillyCareful · 02/12/2020 22:10

Here’s my arm, ready when you are!

I actually found myself smiling listening to the news this morning, and realising how long it’s been that I’ve been frowning and fretting and lip biting at the news.

Whenismumhome · 02/12/2020 22:52

If I could grab 7 billion vaccines and go and vaccinate every single person in the world right now, I would!

But yes, I’m really pleased with today’s news. A huge step in the right direction

Ethelfleda · 03/12/2020 07:24

I really don’t get the obsession with getting teachers vaccinated first? I’m not saying that they aren’t doing a worthwhile job - of course they are! But unless they’re at high risk (such as the elderly etc are) then why should they be near the front of the queue?
There is a really weird polarisation on MN regarding teachers... with one end absolutely hero worshipping them and the other ripping them to pieces. A bit of balance would be better I think.

AlwaysLatte · 03/12/2020 07:28

Me too. It's amazing news. My Dad has kidney failure, heart failure and COPD and we've been waiting for that awful day he gets the virus, even though we're being so so careful. But it's for health care staff (rightly) and over 80s first. He's 79 so I guess he'll have to wait a little longer yet. Fingers crossed it gets pushed out quickly now.

TrufflyPig · 03/12/2020 07:37

I'm really excited! A huge thank you to all the scientists and trial volunteers, you are all heroes.

And yes teachers should be higher up the priority list, they are highly exposed every day.

MyMajesty · 05/12/2020 17:55

I really don’t get the obsession with getting teachers vaccinated first?

Teachers are at risk because of being cooped up with a lot of pupils.
Teachers could then be spreading the virus to others.

MrsFezziwig · 05/12/2020 18:13

Not a teacher, but just from a practical point of view (and obviously I would prefer no-one to catch it) if they either fall ill or have to self-isolate then they aren’t available to teach their classes. As children won’t be vaccinated for the foreseeable future, then the virus is likely to still continue to circulate in schools for a while. Vaccinating high risk groups should reduce the number of serious hospital admissions but how much and how quickly will it reduce prevalence in the community?

Sorry, didn’t intend to put a downer on anything - I’m thrilled too!

Bluewavescrashing · 05/12/2020 18:19

Do you want your child to be taught by a supply teacher or them to he sent home for isolation if their teacher is ill with covid? I would rather my DCs' own teachers are well enough to teach them, actually. And I'd much rather teach my class in person than mess around with home learning.
