Glasses wearers please recommend masks. I’m fed up of looking through fog!

No matter what I try I just steam up unless I have the mask practically touching my eyeballs and my glasses perched on the end of my nose. Which makes it hard for me to see.

I’ve tried a couple of types with wire and pull them up as far as I can but nothing seems to work. I have a small face so I don’t think that helps.

Any suggestions?

The opticians told me to put tissue or cotton wool between the top of the mask and your face

80sMum · 02/12/2020 16:02

The only thing that works for me is to tape the top of the mask onto my face with micropore tape. But usually I just take my glasses off when I go in a shop and hope I'll be able to see what's on the shelves.

Dd gets on well with these ones as do I (she wears glasses). I did put a small dart at the sides to make it closer fitting (it has instructions about how to do that)

amicissimma · 02/12/2020 16:18

I take my glasses off for the last few steps to the shop and stick them inside my coat under my arm to warm them up. It adds to the faff when I get to the shop, of course, but it does help. I do stand to the side of the door while I faff, rather than block it!

Loveatortie · 02/12/2020 16:43

I put some heavy duty garden wire in mine, pinches my nose a bit but at least i can see where I'm going.

SionnachRua · 02/12/2020 16:46

Check combatcovidmasks on Instagram, I buy all of mine from her. She has a scrunchy style mask that can strap around your head, they need a bit of arranging sometimes but I never have steam problems with those. Also has a style called Solo which is thicker and also has the head straps. Not as comfy for long wear but no arranging so a good one for running into the shop - again, no fog.

I sound like such a shill Grin I just really like the masks! Not sure if she's shipping to (presumably) the UK this side of Xmas though.

frozendaisy · 02/12/2020 16:48

Soak your glasses in soapy water, let them dry naturally, the soap creates a film on lens which reduces fog up.

BernieInn · 02/12/2020 16:55

I got mine from Waitrose / Ocado and wear my specs slightly down my nose. Never steams up.

Readysetcake · 02/12/2020 16:56

I heard about the soap thing but ended up having a smudgy misty lens. May try the soak and leave dry method. Tried just rubbing on liquid soap before.

Thanks for the suggestions. I feel I may just end up wearing contacts which I’m not keen on. Unfortunately I’m very short sighted so feel quite vulnerable without my glasses on. If it was just a case of being a bit blurry then I definitely would just take them off.

I've got one of those masks that is like a cowboy's bandana thing (can't think how to describe it!) I wear it round my neck like a scarf then just pull it over my face to use as a covering. It's far better to wear with glasses than a "normal" mask for some reason. Possibly because it's a looser fit? I still get some steam up though unless I wear the glasses over the top of it.

gannett · 02/12/2020 17:06

Got these in the summer and have had no problems with glasses fogging up at all. Press the ridge firmly down on your nose! It's adjustable so should fit snugly round all nose shapes.

I bought these (amongst others) from an Etsy seller and they are the best for me to prevent glasses steam. All my other masks (disposable, linen, cotton and silk) steam my glasses. These are silk but the pleated effect seems to make a difference wrt steaming. My other silk ones are just flat masks and they steam me up.

Smallsteps88 · 02/12/2020 17:13

I still need to set my glasses bridge on top of the mask though.

mollscroll · 02/12/2020 17:17

I have not found a solution. Tried everything. And if you have varifocals you can’t have the mask up high and the glasses down your nose as you need the bottom bit if the lens to look through.

Grooticle · 02/12/2020 17:18

Buy anti fog spray - it’s aimed at swimmers to stop goggles steaming up. Spray it on, wipe off with a soft cloth, wear masks as normal. No more fogging.

IrkedEssex · 02/12/2020 17:24

The only masks that work for me are the disposable surgical masks. The wire over the nose is easy to squash tight against my face and doesn't push my specs too far out of line (I have varifocals and some masks make it impossible to see properly regardless of fogging issues)

paintedpanda · 02/12/2020 17:32

Buy a Hoya anti fog cloth. They're about £6 and work wonders.

FatGirlShrinking · 02/12/2020 17:34

I use disposable masks, make sure to shape the wire so it's as close to skin as possible over my nose and I twist the ear elastics to it forms a cross in front of my ear which seems to give a better shape around chin and cheeks.

OakleyStreetisnotinChelsea · 02/12/2020 17:39

Muck off anti fog spray.

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 02/12/2020 17:43

I wear a disposable mask up on the bridge of my nose, glasses sit just on the top of the mask, breath through my nose not my mouth. No fogging at all, no special sprays required. It just takes practice and perseverance to get the setup right, and you need to make sure the wire in the mask is properly moulded to the contours of your face.

tealady · 02/12/2020 17:43

I have this problem and its so difficult. Like you I am short sighted but wear varifocals and really struggle with lenses now I need varifocals.

The best tip I have is to adjust your breathing slightly. So I breathe in through my nose and blow out through my mouth and try to direct the breath downwards by slightly overlapping your top lip. I have tried several mask types, made my own to get a good fit, sprayed my glasses etc but exhaling downwards has helped the most. You have to concentrate initially but it soon becomes second nature.

Alocasia · 02/12/2020 17:46

I’m an optician and swear by ‘No Fog’ wipes. We are selling tons of them at the moment and I have treated all my work equipment with them - the steaming up was driving me mad. Not anymore. You need to wipe your glasses with them maybe once a day.

Boden are the best ones I found, but the patterns are feminine, so you have to like that rather than plain.

Drbrowns · 02/12/2020 18:16

I got wipes for my glasses from the chemist. They really work. Also wear the mask right up to my nose and glasses over it

PuzzledObserver · 02/12/2020 18:17

I’ve just sent off for some cloths impregnated with some sort of chemical. They claim to prevent dogging for 48 hours after each use.
