Lifting lockdown too soon

Aibu to think the lockdown has been lifted too soon. The point of lockdown is to get the virus to low levels and break chains of infection.

13,000 new cases yesterday which is lower than the around 25,000 a day in Oct and Nov.

Cases are likely to fall for another 2 weeks and then start rising again. This will then snowball by Xmas and by early January we could be back to where we started.

Wouldn’t it of been better to lockdown until the 16th ensuring the virus is in really low levels before Xmas.

Unfortunately people will break the rules for Xmas regardless and I think this is Government knows this and hence why they are allowing mixing.

I get the economy needs to be balanced but it just seems foolish to me that we are lifting lockdown with ten thousand cases a day plus.

YABU. Tier 3 is pretty much the same as lockdown. A vaccine has been approved and is due to start next week. Lockdowns were to reduce pressure on the NHS, nothing more. The vaccine will help with this.

But it hasn't been lifted in any meaningful way for 99% of the country. Yes, shops are open for browsing not just click and collect and some restaurants/pubs/cafes can open - but many can't. We still can't mix households.

I'm in Tier 3 (despite having lower case levels than the neighbouring counties in Tier 2) and it doesn't feel like much has been lifted here.

So no, I can't see there's going to be a massive rise as a result of this. As a result of Christmas, maybe. But we can't lockdown much longer, the cost is just too high. Debenhams and Arcadia both announced they will be closing stores this week - that will be many more job losses.

FourTeaFallOut · 02/12/2020 15:21

The vast majority of us are moving from lockdown to tier 2 and 3 restrictions so hopefully it won't be quite as bad as you predict. And if case levels are going to continue to drop for two weeks there's only a further week till the kids break up from school.

I guess we'll have to wait and see but it would be awful if the infection rate starts climbing dramatically before the the restrictions are lifted for Christmas.

I can see why they did it, I definitely think our retailers need this festive period to survive but we are in cross your fingers territory.

starfro · 02/12/2020 15:21

Cases peaked according to Zoe date on the 4th November, before lockdown started. Given it takes approximately a week to show new infections in the data, this indicates that tiers, along with a moderate level of immunity in the population was/is enough.

Shekinah1 · 02/12/2020 15:36

With tier 3 maybe cases will continue to fall.

With tier 2 I feel the rules will largely go ignored about household mixing.

@Shekinah1 but that's nothing to do with lockdown being lifted or not. That's to do with people being willing to follow restrictions or not. I think those of us in T3 are probably feeling more like ignoring the restrictions than those in T2 actually.

If people are going to ignore the rules, having a lockdown won't have an effect either.
TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 02/12/2020 15:43

I’m in Tier 3. I won’t be ignoring the rules. Nor will l be cramming into Primark for 24 hour shopping.

Hugosmugo · 02/12/2020 15:49

YABU. It is pretty much lockdown but 2i5u shops and gyms open (which have good measures in place) we can't stay locked down forever.

TicTacTwo · 02/12/2020 15:59

There's not much difference tbh
We could have table service in a pub or restaurant or go to a gym or Primark but that's not so revolutionary really.

TheDailyCarbuncle · 02/12/2020 16:03

I agree. Who cares if people need to work in order to feed themselves? If they die from starvation, that doesn't matter. All that matters is covid.

MercyBooth · 02/12/2020 16:14

I wont be ramming myself into shops either. The pro lockdowners can do that..........oh wait they are expecting others to do it. Did my Christmas shopping at Boots during November.

Tough shit,

And i really hope this idea catches on.

MercyBooth · 02/12/2020 16:17

We were in tier 2 for just over a week just before Lockdown 2 thanks to the leader of ECC and his begging bowl. He and Cleverly can open their wallets around Braintree!

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 02/12/2020 16:45

Mercybooth, l don’t really care what you or others do in regard to shops. I’m not having a go at you for going in shops. That’s your choice.

I did most of my Xmas shopping online in September.

BernieInn · 02/12/2020 16:53

I'm also in agreement. Better to be alive in a barren, economic wasteland than be DEAD or a SELFISH MURDERER spreading the virus around.

MercyBooth · 02/12/2020 17:02

@TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince I suspect you and i are not last minute merchants when it comes to Christmas shopping.

Srslydontgiveacrap · 02/12/2020 17:26

YABU let's get things moving again. If that means a short sharp lockdown in January, so be it.

nolovelost · 02/12/2020 17:29

I'll be avoiding shops as much as I can too. Even though I'm not classed as clinically vulnerable I still have health conditions and I don't care what they say about me not being at risk, I'd rather not take the risk.

All the shops opening is scary to me, although needed economically I suppose, but at least you can choose whether to mix. The traffic today was like it was back in Feb, I think people are keen to do Christmas shopping now.

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 02/12/2020 17:41

But footfall in shops was lower than expected. Although l guess it is a work day.

HesterShaw1 · 02/12/2020 17:58

I get the economy needs to be balanced

If by "balanced" you mean "function", there's your answer.

This year has really brought home just how many people have no idea what the "economy" is or what it does.

Shekinah1 · 02/12/2020 18:41

The shops are never going to be busy until it’s over because shopping isn’t a nice experience
