Had covid mildly? Will you get the vaccine?

Let me just preface this by saying I am absolutely not an anti vaxer! I have already encouraged older family members to be front of the queue when it is available to them.

I am just curious as to whether those who have had confirmed covid, but it has been asymptomatic or with very mild symptoms, will you get the vaccine?
I am just pondering as in our household we have had it with no issues, and in 2 family members not a single symptom, would we have any benefit?
I can’t see any real benefit, the adult family members at least also had antibodies so we have a clear immune response, so what more would a vaccine do? Would it not be better to save it for other people?
We are likely to be eligible soonish due to work.

The vaccine will prime immunity in a different way to the virus (virus's are good are subverting the immune system and priming incomplete immunity - hence why people aren't sure if immunity to covid is long-lined). Vaccines are usually designed to provide long-term immunity so that is one of the things the vaccine could do (in response to "what more can a vaccine do"). It will also act as a booster to your existing immunity. If you had mild covid it is also possible that your antibody levels are low and will wane quicker than if you had a more severe infection although that isn't clear yet. However, I would think if you have already had covid you are protected for a period of time at least so if it was me I would be happier to wait longer for a vaccine but would still want one eventually,

Yes absolutely will be getting the vaccine. I had Covid moderately/severely.

Regularsizedrudy · 02/12/2020 11:33

Yes absolutely. Vaccines are about more than just protecting the individual. By getting vaccinated you protect the wider population.

Yes, and yes

GreyishDays · 02/12/2020 11:39

I will because they think natural immunity might only last a few months.

QueenBlueberries · 02/12/2020 11:40

First of all, if you've had Covid mildly, you might have some immunity to it but you don't know how long that immunity will last.

Secondly, if you've had it mildly once it doesn't mean that it will be mild if you catch it again.

BamboozledandBefuddled · 02/12/2020 11:43

I had Covid in March - very mild symptoms. If either DH or DM (I'm her carer) had it, they were asymptomatic. None of us are having the vaccine. (No, we don't think it's been rushed/ is an excuse to microchip us/any other conspiracy you care to name.)

movingonup20 · 02/12/2020 11:56

I'm low priority so will decide when I reach the top of the list, late March according to the schedule a friend on the inside showed me (and that's depending on availability of course)

The current official advice is still uncertain as to whether those who have had covid need to have the vaccine, maybe a booster at some point. If we had been ill with it then we would do so of course.

@JS87 good post, thank you.

@Regularsizedrudy I am aware of how vaccines usually work, but up to this point we have no evidence as to whether this vaccine prevents transmission.
There is currently ongoing research to find this, we will know more in a few weeks.
If it does show protection of others, then of course I will do it to protect the more vulnerable.

I also get tested weekly, so between that and having antibodies, I am at lower risk of passing anything on than the average person.

Personally i think having covid has made some immune (for at least mar-dec)- look at London

There was at least one person who has had it worse a second time though

Mummabeary · 02/12/2020 14:11

Will they have tested the vaccine on people who have already had Covid to see what the implications are? I presume there would have been some trial participants from this group but I can never see it mentioned anywhere....

PrivateD00r · 02/12/2020 14:24

I will have the vaccine but am nervous about timing as I am not even completely over covid yet, 5 weeks on. I am really worried about doing more harm than good to my body, but on the other hand I will do all I can to avoid getting this again as I was very unwell. It is really difficult to know! I expect to be offered it quite soon so need to make a decision.
