If you're in tier 2, is your local pub opening today?

Hi,

Like so many, our pub is a wet lead pub, which serves food - not a restaurant, so they have taken the decision it is not viable to open under tier 2 restrictions and so will remain closed until we can get into tier 1, which could take a long time!

I know pubs which don't serve food will definitely not be opening yet, maybe never again Sad but if your local is like mine, are they opening today?

It seems a bit of a mix. The ones that are have (understandably) very strict rules that make it not very inviting IYKWIM.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2020 10:08

This is one-all totally understandable rules but the 2 hour time limit would have me clock watching.

*2 Hour time limit on tables
*Alcohol can only be served during your meal
*Alcohol can only be served after your food order has been taken.
*Alcohol will not be served after your table is cleared.

Yes it's opening, but it now just seems like a fucking hassle to go. I've got sit outside to be with any friends, spend money on a meal I don't want, and leave soon after I finish eating. I go to restaurants to eat dinner, and I go the pub to make merry over many drinks! I'm just going to wait until we're Tier 1 (unlikely!) or until restrictions relax generally.

Sparklingbrook · 02/12/2020 10:19

I feel the same @toolatetooearly, nobody in this house really fancies going out for a meal with all the dos and don'ts. I would like to see DS1 but that means sitting outside as he doesn't live here and neither of us want that.

But I am torn because the people trying to keep their pubs and restaurants open need us!

toolatetooearly · 02/12/2020 10:27

@Sparklingbrook yes, that's the only thing that might persuade me - I do like our local and I want to support it. They did such a good job of making it secure in the summer, I felt safer going there than any shop I went into, and it's not their fault this stupid restriction has come in. It needs to get a little bit warmer than it is right now for me to sit outside though!

Yes, I might tell DS2 and DH we ARE going out for a substantial meal and it won't be massively enjoyable but it's for the greater good. Study the menu online before we go and get on with it!

CovidPostingName · 02/12/2020 10:36

Sadly not. Tier 2 and our amazing local is wet led so it just doesn't work for them at all.

BrokenBrit · 02/12/2020 10:42

Yes, they have developed a cheap menu of small, but ‘substantial’ meals. I didn’t even know they had a kitchen tbh! I wish them luck.

PancakesandCoffee · 02/12/2020 10:50

Oops *wet led

We were ready to support our local, but it's not going to happen. We have actually booked a table at a restaurant just down the road for the weekend, but have to say, with all the rules and time limits, I'm not looking to it as much as usual.

I absolutely love going out for a drink or for dinner and drinks, but this new system reminds me a bit of Alice and Wonderland and the Mad Hatters Tea party - clean cup clean cup, move down, move dooowwn!" Confused

You also need to know when the 2 hour starts. When you sit down? When you order? In which case the food had better be coming out quickly.

TheDogsMother · 02/12/2020 11:08

Ours says it won't be financially viable for them so they are staying closed sadly. Does anyone know why a 'substantial meal' rather than just having a drink makes Covid any less of a risk ?

ifonly4 · 02/12/2020 11:15

We have four pubs which are walkable for us (40 mins). One has been a wet pub since lockdown and isn't re-opening. One a Greene King that sells food isn't opening either. The other two are also Greene King and they're staying open - both are very popular though and hot on covid restrictions. It's such a shame.

Hayeahnobut · 02/12/2020 11:16

There are eight pubs in my town centre, and of them only one will open when we go into Tier 2 (currently T3), and that's the Wetherspoons. Every other pub is an independent and it's not viable for them to continue with the current restrictions. We'll be fortunate if half of them reopen.

My unscientific take is that there’s no popping in for half an hour for a quick pint by loads of people. Reduces numbers.
BernieInn · 02/12/2020 11:24

Such a shame that the pub industry has effectively been thrown under the bus. They've obviously concluded it's the sector they're willing to lose, despite it supporting thousands of jobs and millions in tax revenue. Could so easily have been avoided with adequate, targeted financial support.

IfNotNow12 · 02/12/2020 11:32

I think the rules are completely insane, make no logical sense, and we are going to lose half our pubs. Oh, well, I expect property developers will be on hand to turn them into flats..
My local is a real community hub. Seniors gather there daily for their dinner, people have their baby showers, they even do bingo! If it goes, there will be a lot more isolated and vulnerable people.
