I thought there would be a new buyer. Can’t believe 12,000 people will lose their jobs!

I buy foundation from there and sometimes perfumes if they are cheaper than elsewhere.

Last time I went in there I bought and paid for some foundation and then I was followed by a store detective from floor to floor. I was annoyed and upset and challenged him. He just looked at me and walked away. I complained to the manager who pretended not to know who the guy was even after I described him.
Will not miss Debenhams but feel sorry for the decent staff in there

@Fizbosshoes

According to bbc news the website is very busy!

It was crazy last night from about 6pm until 11pm I tried several times to get on. Was out in a queue, got on the site, got bounced back to the queue and so on.

Sometime after 11 I tried again and managed to get the jumper I wanted, half price. It was £50 so while i don't want to lose that amount of cash I thought it was worth the gamble! Now to play the waiting game to see if they last longer enough for it to be dispatched.

I'm gutted for everyone in retail, it's so awful Sad

We've got to do something about the way business and the economy works in this country. Too much is dependent on the Phillip Green/Mike Ashley types and private equity. We don't seem to make anything real anymore, it's all bullshit financial services. It's a house of cards - as soon as there's an unexpected event, they can't service their debts and the whole thing falls down. There's something really wrong with this country, where PG can retain a £900 million personal fortune but 12,000 people will be made redundant and not get their full pension paid. How is it legal that pension funds can be accessed/threatened (not an economist so to me this looks like a moral black hole endorsed by the govt)?

TheEmojiFormerlyKnownAsPrince · 02/12/2020 10:04

I thought that laws had come in about pension funds after the last debacle. I was suprised they hadn’t. I remember Maxwell plundering the pension schemes.

Thatcher moved Britain from a manufacturing to a service economy in the 80’s. I was working in manufacturing, and literally saw it moving abroad in front of my eyes every day.

To set us up as a manufacturing country again would cost billions. And the country has no money. I can’t see a way out of this sorry mess.😢

Haven't bought anything from Debenhams for years, they were neither cheap and cheerful or a bit upmarket, they just sat in a sort of middle ground which pleased hardly anybody, surprised they've lasted this long.

Fizbosshoes · 02/12/2020 10:15

I work in manufacturing/supply to retail. Some of our major customers that used to buy loads from us, now mainly order something if they cant get it quickly enough from the far east, or ask us to adapt or mend things that have been made much cheaper (but poorer quality) abroad.
Some colleagues got a lot of work that would normally be done in China, in February/March when factories there were closed for weeks.

I feel really sorry for the staff, but I’m not surprised. Our local one was tatty and unloved.
