On the new system today. Wonder what will happen?

Well as you said, they will abstain, unless some rebels. It will still get through though.

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/12/2020 07:26

Will it? Many tories are against. Lib dems also.

Including Junior, there are 120 ministers in the Government, and probably an equal number of aspiring ones. Most of those will toe the party-line to climb the greasy pole, so I doubt if the government will be out-voted.

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/12/2020 07:31

Upwards of 40 Tories expected to vote against.

When the going gets tough they abstain bit like Brexit all over again

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/12/2020 07:38

How will that work out if Lib dems and Labour abstain?

Keir Starmer had a talk with Chris Whitty about how important the new measures are. Interesting he is then planning to pass

Do they not care if covid rises then? Or is it just about making the other side look bad.

I think Labour have said they agree with the tier system in principle but feel there should be more support for the businesses hit hard by the rules, like hospitality. So they are abstaining but not voting against.

Google says there are 364 Tories MPs and if the other parties are abstaining, the vote will be decided by them. So upwards of 40 Tory MPs voting against will still leave 300ish voting for the tiers.

There are other issues covid cannot trump everything Have you not seen the news this morning, Arcadia has collapsed, Debenhams is on the brink Thousands of job losses Our rights and freedoms have been eroded We have to fight this
PurpleDaisies · 01/12/2020 08:21

The tier system is really unfair for some constituencies with low cases near high ones. I can see how an mp for one of those places would vote against.

Overall I think it will pass though. Kier Starmer saying he isn’t sitting on the fence is not very credible though.

They’ll have made that decision knowing it will pass anyway. So they can make a point about how they demanded more support for businesses and didn’t get it. But they know it won’t make a difference.

tortoiseshell1985 · 01/12/2020 08:33

Chris Whitty isn't an elected MP though so frankly doesn't get a shout here in my opinion

Lostinacloud · 01/12/2020 08:33

Exactly that @Meredithgrey1. It’s all for show and point scoring. They have zero care for the actual issue.
I find myself wishing once again that somebody normal would emerge from the mist and set up an alternative and viable 4th party. Someone with an aspiration to actually better the country and work on behalf of their fellow countrymen and not just for their own self interests and those of their mates.

Bushola · 01/12/2020 08:36

The government can still implement this if the vote fails iirc . When they renewed the legislation in September they offered the rebels a vote if they have time but still have the powers to implement an an emergency

BBCONEANDTWO · 01/12/2020 08:59

They get paid to be an MP it's their bloody job to make a decision - it should be illegal to abstain bloody cowards.

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/12/2020 09:29

Apparently the Lib Dems are also abstaining or voting against too.
"Too dangerous" apparently..

sashagabadon · 01/12/2020 09:31

It’s just politicking. Nothing more. Keir has calculated that tiers will still go through even with the Tory rebels so feels it is safe to abstain / sit on the fence as he is not against the rules. Labour loves lockdown He would have egg on his face if there are more Tories rebels than he thinks there are and the vote fails though I don’t think that will happen.
Mind you I am happy to see Labour opposing for once but they are only doing so as they are confident it will pass anyway so that makes me think it’s all just politics for Keir rather than any conviction so disappointing for me.

Bushola · 01/12/2020 09:37

Labour arent opposing as they arent voting against it.

What they should have done back in March is made sure that all these measures were to be properly debated, rather than just rubber stamped though which has led to the Goverment implementing whatever they want.

Although I think if Labour had more say, things would have been worse as we'd have still been in a longer stricter ruinous lockdown from March, as they'd have been in competition with Drakeford and Kranky McSturgeon over who can have the harshest measures with stupid rules (like the taping off of aisles in supermarkets

Orangeblossom7777 · 01/12/2020 09:42

Can you imagine?

OP posts:
sashagabadon · 01/12/2020 09:47

Exactly Bushola. Labour have been pushing throughout for longer/ harder lockdowns. Sided with the unions not to open schools in June when it was arguably the safest time. It would be worst than the situation in Wales now. 2 week circuit breaker went well ! and yet Keir was all for that.
At least the Tory mp’sare opposing for economic reasons. I can respect that. Labour are abstaining not because they oppose the measures ( they support them) but because they’re gambling that opposing will help them politically.
Keir is so disappointing to me.

Arcadia was falling apart anyway, Covid or no Covid. It wouldn’t have lasted much longer
