Would you be happy seeing your child's nativity play in person?

Government guidelines today state that in tier 1 and 2, nativity plays can be performed to parents in school halls. As a teacher, given how strict we've been about everything, I feel uneasy about this. How do parents feel?
YABU - I'll go without worries
YANBU - should be videoed / streamed

Ignoring the parents side of things, I'd be surprised that a school is doing nativity performances in person. I wouldn't be comfortable if I was a staff member there.

HelloDulling · 30/11/2020 06:45

If I could be 2m away from everyone, yes. But that obviously can’t happen, unless they perform it 6 times a day between now and the end of term, to a very small audience each time.

SushiGo · 30/11/2020 06:45

I don't think our school will allow it, the hall is very small.

In Tier 1, I think it's okay, but not tier 2.

FippertyGibbett · 30/11/2020 06:47

I’m assuming that each household is sitting 2m apart ?

musicalfrog · 30/11/2020 06:47

We're tier 2 and it's being filmed for us. To just glad the kids are getting their chance to do it tbh.

musicalfrog · 30/11/2020 06:47

*I'm just glad

Barbie222 · 30/11/2020 06:48

Ours is next week. Feels a bit soon plus the hall is not big enough for enough performances for each year group. I doubt we'll perform to parents directly. Was more trying to get a sense of how parents feel about the glaring weirdness of it all!

Ours is being filmed (T3). I'd be happy to never see a Nativity play again though bad mother.

SionnachRua · 30/11/2020 06:52

It just seems very unnecessary...why has your principal decided to go ahead with it? You teach small kids, you certainly have enough to be doing.

I'd be looking for clarity on this asap.

Rarotonga2 · 30/11/2020 06:57

Though I would love to attend in person, I am relieved my son's nativity is being filmed. My DH and I are both vulnerable to Covid and if it happened in person we wouldn't be able to go.

ineedaholidaynow · 30/11/2020 07:22

It seems a bit bizarre to let parents come into the school to watch a nativity play when we are currently not allowing them anywhere near the school buildings. Would they be allowed to use the toilets?

DarceyDashwood · 30/11/2020 07:24

I don’t think I would really, sadly. I don’t think I’d be able to relax and enjoy it this year. I think filming it this year is the better option. I know our is very strict about people going into school/risk assessments etc so can’t see them allowing it anyway

They have already made plans for each class to perform an Xmas song and poem and for it to be recorded - which I’m happy with.

littleducks · 30/11/2020 07:24

The Xmas show seems to be a logistical nightmare full of stress at the best of times, they need to ticket to limit attendees and it always seem packed. I couldn't imagine the stress of cleaning all the chairs and things too, surely there is enough of that at lunch?

No parents have been allowed in the building since September. Would be weird to suddenly allow this.

MarshaBradyo · 30/11/2020 07:25

Tabby it should be filmed in tier 2 also

MarshaBradyo · 30/11/2020 07:25

Yanbu that is

KyraGoose · 30/11/2020 07:26

Yes I would go, no problem.

musicalfrog · 30/11/2020 07:27

Performance art is a part of their learning and the time spent on it will be factored into their workload as in any other year. It helps the children with confidence and teamwork etc. Why shouldn't they do it within their bubble? There's no need for parents to be watching at this time, but no reason at all not to do it.
SionnachRua · 30/11/2020 07:30

@musicalfrog that's not what I'm saying though. Fine to do a nativity of some sort, unnecessary to do as a live performance.

Tbqh there are other ways to develop performance skills but if they do theirs through nativity all well and good.

NuttyinNotts · 30/11/2020 07:30

YANBU

If ours allowed parents to attend, we would be put in a very difficult position. My husband is extremely clinically vulnerable, so sharing a school hall with a load of other families would be a bad idea. But my daughter would be heartbroken if we didn't go but everyone else's mum and dad did. Obviously it wouldn't compare to the heartbreak if her dad got seriously ill, but at 5 years old she isn t capable of weighing things up rationally like that.

SleepingStandingUp · 30/11/2020 07:34

Another Tomy hall here. I mean I guess masked up with the one external door open and spots on th floor to stand, limited to 1 person and no babies, it would be doable but even just filing down the narrow corridor, cleaning hands on the way in, two performances a day per class (single form entry here) would still take over a week

ReeseWitherfork · 30/11/2020 07:35

I feel fairly relaxed and my area is tier 2 albeit with a very low case rate but it’s a no from me! It puts a lot of parents in a very awkward position too. OP is this primary age?

Theotherrudolph · 30/11/2020 07:37

I don’t think parents should be watching indoors in person - how does that fit with the normal rules that disaster will occur if we so much as step into the playground tarmac to collect them? (I do actually quite like the banning of parents from the playground and classroom and so do my children.) Perfectly happy to see a video. I’d be perfectly happy for them not to do it at all this year, they’re short of staff for various reasons, covid and otherwise and sorting out video production is really a hassle they don’t need. Basically if child is at school, happy and learning stuff, I’m very happy - weirdness or not!

x2boys · 30/11/2020 07:56

Im in Tier three and my child's school play is being filmed ,it would seem a bit ridiculous I it wasent ,as I have a virtual EHCP review on Wednesday for ds2 and a virtual parents evening on Thursday for Ds1

You did say they have enough to be doing, which is why i responded as i did. A live audience vs a video doesn't imply more work imo.

Hmmph · 30/11/2020 08:16

Parents watching nativity plays in school halls is an insane idea. I have no idea why the government decided to encourage it. Children could wait and perform end of year plays instead (indoors or outdoors depending where we are in the summer). It’s almost like they want maximum spread at Christmas...
