What is the logic behind the 5 day Christmas rule?

Just that really because I don't get it. If I choose to bubble up with my mum and sister's households for Christmas and we only see each other between the 23 and the 27, how does it make any difference if I don't leave my mum's house til the 28th, 29th or 30th?

Genuine question.

It probably doesn't but they have to draw the line somewhere or why can't you also visit on January 10th and Feb 1st etc etc

Pootle40 · 29/11/2020 18:52

There is no logic.

People would have met up anyway and you can now feel you have the government's blessing to do it. But they can only condone so much so it's (I think) to allow for travel either side

Covidnomore · 29/11/2020 18:52

None

starrynight19 · 29/11/2020 18:54

I don’t think there is any logic whatsoever in the whole Christmas plan it’s ridiculous.

Sandyplankton · 29/11/2020 18:54

Because presumably by that point you'd have gone back to work/school/your daily lives.

I just think it's going to cause utter meltdown travel wise.

Chaotic45 · 29/11/2020 18:55

No logic OP.

The whole thing makes a complete mockery of the rules.

Oblahdeeoblahdoe · 29/11/2020 18:55

No logic at all. I wish we could have chosen our own 5 days

BluebellsGreenbells · 29/11/2020 18:56

So here we go, but WHY not meeee

Honestly this 5 day rule is going to set the numbers back, any excuse to break the rules further.

Do you know the pandemic experts plan for those breaking the rules?

Sandyplankton · 29/11/2020 18:57

I am all for family being able to see one another at Christmas, don't get me wrong.

I feel able to do so safely because I'll be pulling my son out of school at the end of next week. Everyone else in the bubble works from home.

Did you realise you're not supposed to stay over??

When you start looking at the recommends they basically don't want you getting together at all...

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 29/11/2020 18:57

Dont worry, i saw theyve appointed a 'travel tzar' to prebent travel chaos. He's probably one of their mates who is heir to a toilet paper fortune or something, but I expect it'll be super!

We're doing Xmas on 2nd January after we've had 2 weeks out of school. Screw the rules, my plans are safer.

Sandyplankton · 29/11/2020 18:57

BuebellsGreenbells

Where have I said this is what I intend to do? You have no idea what my Christmas plans are.

I merely pointed out the logic was faulty. Because it is.

OP posts:
satnighttakeaway · 29/11/2020 18:58

It's not meant to be logical, it's a concession to relax the rules for a few days to allow some slight normality over Christmas. Don't waste any time trying to come up with a scientific justification.

I thought everyone knew that.

FredtheFerret · 29/11/2020 18:58

I'm slightly touched that you think Boris and co are using any kind of logic after this year. Grin

Very little has so far had much 'logic' behind it as far as I can see. Lockdown? But keep the schools open?

Our local pub generally has about 5 folks in for a quiet pint. Our local secondary has almost 1,000 pupils. I've no idea why they've currently got 4 year groups having to self isolate at home...

Sandyplankton · 29/11/2020 18:58

Sounds much more sensible to me than doing it on the 23rd!!!

Because it means we then are likely to have a full fortnight before schools reopen to try to minimise cases spreading.

Starlightstarbright1 · 29/11/2020 18:59

I woukd say why even 5 days. Should be more than one as some people are working but no need for 5 days

Sandyplankton · 29/11/2020 19:00

Because it means we then are likely to have a full fortnight before schools reopen to try to minimise cases spreading.

Ah ok that makes a lot more sense!

In any case I am planning to keep my son at home until the middle of January.

Covidnomore · 29/11/2020 19:00

I am shocked if I'm honest that you are taking child out of school early.

I don't get the govt logic, but i really don't get the logic of prioritising a couple of days at Christmas over a child being able to go to school and have social interaction for 2 weeks.

Sandyplankton · 29/11/2020 19:02

Covidnomore

For me it is more important my son sees his family than attends school.

He's 4. If he were 14 I would feel differently.

But I am not British and in my culture family is a lot more important than it tends to be here.

OP posts:
DraftDodger · 29/11/2020 19:02

Does there need to be a logic when it comes to this lot

tilder · 29/11/2020 19:02

No logic.

Politicians going for the popular vote. Provided granny doesn't catch Covid (might not be so popular then)

January is going to be awful. Post Christmas covid with a side of Brexit.

WouldstrokeTomHardy · 29/11/2020 19:02

No logic. Bojo the twat doesn't like being unpopular. Simple as that.

Sandyplankton · 29/11/2020 19:03

Also he gets social interaction at home as we are in a household bubble with my sister (single parent ) and her own DC.
