Are you ready to go back to outdoor group exercise?

We are Tier 2 but do seem to have had a surge of cases in the last couple of weeks. I know more people who currently have it than I've known through the entire thing since March, which I accept is probably in part due to more testing.

However, outdoor exercise in controlled conditions and small groups feels fairly safe to me.

I'm a coach at a sports club (for adults) we were hopintog et back, within the guidelines next week but are finding many of our coaches are feeling too anxious to lead a group, although we were running at full strength until the start of this current lockdown.

Are you feeling more anxious now than at the beginning of November?

what are the rules for test and trace for indoor exercise? I am wondering due to DC going back to swimming clubs. E.g. is it everyone in the indoor space or only those within 2 meters? In a pool with club swimming (and swimming lessons) it is easy to establish who was within 2 meters as they have set lanes.

Can informal but organised running groups go out as a 6?

I’m back at on an indoor exercise class at the gym on Thursday. Tier 2. I have mixed feelings but would like to give it a go and see how it is. It seemed very safe before lockdown.

@HundredMilesAnHour

Unfortunately there is an element of having to trust the people you do group classes with not to be out breaking the rules and putting us all at risk in class. I think that is too worrying for some people and they will still keep away from group exercise.
^this

I was tentatively up for going to outdoor classes until one person in our fitness group messaged after one of the first sessions (I didn't attend) that they was pleased for getting through the session despite feeling unwell! It wasn't covid but it made me realise that some people will be thoughtless or not following the rules so its just too risky.

I wouldn't do parkrun if it starts early in the spring
I'd go back right now if I could. Its what I have missed the most and can't wait to go back

I believe so

I'm booked for a 7am HIIT class on Wed. I can't wait. I have really been struggling without going to the gym. I live alone, I work from home in a newish job (so have never met anyone I work with as I started the job during the first lockdown) and my family live 250 miles away. I am desperate for some socially distanced face-to-face contact that isn't outside in the pouring rain and cold and dark!

BecomeStronger · 29/11/2020 21:54

I've done some more digging about all this.

The primary concern of our coaches seems to be that they may be identified as a contact during a club session and have to isolate. However Test and Trace don't seem to be interested in any contacts the positive person has outdoors.

Parkrun have, as you'd expect put a lot into this, and their figures suggest 97% of transmission occurs with close contact indoors.

England Althletic haven't been able to identify a single case of transmission during one of their club sessions, which were running since August until this lockdown.

Are gym classes back on?

They are in my gym but everyone is in their own separate socially distanced area (marked out on the floor with tape), with their own weights/cardio equipment and no using changing rooms, arriving early or hanging around after class. It's in, sanitise, straight to your zone, do class, out immediately.

Changi · 29/11/2020 22:22

Our gym has reopened but no classes

Mine has classes. The same conditions as above.

I can't wait, I've really missed playing hockey and can't wait to get back out there despite the freezing temperatures!

lurker101 · 29/11/2020 22:28

I can’t wait to get back to the gym, mine is indoors, booked a class for Wednesday after work, and was going 3-5 times per week since they reopened in the summer until they closed in November. Never felt unsafe.

Redcrayons · 29/11/2020 22:35

Chomping at the bit to get back to it. It’s my only adult social face to face contact and i really miss it.

We had someone in our group test positive, he told T&T about attending the session and they said it didn’t count. It’s a reasonable concern though, we have some members who won’t come back because they can’t take time off if told to isolate.

RaggieDolls · 29/11/2020 23:10

From a virus point of view, yes. I don't feel at risk at my outdoor aerobics. From a fitness point of view... no... I've been a bit lazy the past few weeks. It's going to hurt.

PilatesPeach · 30/11/2020 07:44

Tier 3 gyms open but no classes allowed, Tiers 1 & 2 indoor classes allowed as before lockdown 2 ie distanced and not subject to rule of 6 as that is for mixing/interacting which distanced classes don't do.
