Shopping while isolated

I’m a single Mum, isolating with dd. We ran out of loo paper and the only way I could see to get more was to spend £25 in Iceland to get something delivered that costs £2. Even then, we have to wait until tomorrow night to get it delivered.

I just can’t stop crying. This is money that I don’t have and haven’t budgeted for. Tried to get help but the assistance line went dead and the gov.uk website just confused me.

I was so tempted just to go out to the shop and I bet lots of people are breaking isolation for just this reason.

Improvise with tissues/face cloth for wees until the morning & sort it tomorrow

I would have thought one of the neighbourhood help groups (with a fake name) should be safe enough shouldn't it?

Do you not have a phone number for someone who helped you get moved there?

3littlewords · 27/11/2020 21:59

In all serious though if all those options do fail please don't go without the bare essentials, nip to the closest shop with your DD both wearing masks gloves or whatever you have to reduce transmission. Yes we need to protect society but not at the expense of going without basic human essentials.

Round us Morrisons will do emergency deliveries for isolating people, a bag or two.

There will be local help, good luck finding it

PrivateD00r · 27/11/2020 22:01

Fair enough op, I thought that might be the case with social media Flowers I can understand why you wouldn't want to even risk a fake account in your shoes. One more suggestion, perhaps you could cancel Iceland and try a local chemists? Ours deliver prescriptions for free, I bet a small independent would happily drop off some loo roll if you explain the situation with dd - just say you recently moved and have no friends or family locally as yet. Worth a try Flowers

Bridecilla · 27/11/2020 22:03

Can you call the refuge you were in? I bet they'd help

mumwon · 27/11/2020 22:04

if you have a jug or plastic cup use this to wash yourself - old vest. socks cotton wool (dispose in bin obviously)
talk to next door neighbour op -people are often more helpful than you expect
ring council & ask for help advice they maybe able to give you a link

mumwon · 27/11/2020 22:05

actually op contact the hostel & ask their advice/help

Nomnomarrgh · 27/11/2020 22:05

Sorry don't know if this has already been mentioned but I think on Just Eat now you can order essentials from places like local Co-ops etc, it would still be more expensive than going yourself but less than £25 I'd have thought.
Might be worth a look? Thanks

TolstoyAteMyHamster · 27/11/2020 22:16

Do you know your neighbours or anyone locally? It won’t help this time but there may well be a Whatsapp group set up. Ours (London suburb where no one really knew anyone this time last year) would come to your aid next time if you posted - we had someone in a similar position and people shopped for her and dropped round ready cooked meals.
I really hope you find some one who can help and hope you get a good night’s sleep.

cheninblanc · 27/11/2020 22:36

I would help, Kent South East London area. Could do shopping and drop off for you

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/11/2020 23:15

We’re not church goers but the Parrish magazine comes through the door and now always has a number to call for help with shopping - could you ring your local church?

If someone knocked on my door and said they were a neighbour needing help I would gladly give them stuff we had in, or go to the shops. You could wear a mask, stand well back? (One of the only good things to come from this is that we are now friends with our neighbours and not just on “hello” terms.)

Deliveroo round here does Co-op, and also M&S.

Lockheart · 27/11/2020 23:43

You'll be fine - you can manage without toilet roll until you can get to the shops. There are other options - you can clean yourself down with soap and water and dry with a towel, cut up any old cloth, requisition any kitchen roll, cotton pads, tissues, or wipes you may have in the house.

Nomnomarrgh · 28/11/2020 01:05

I currently can’t leave home until Friday. Found out about local govt group but they aren’t open until Monday. I don’t whatsapp due to the aforementioned ex.

Previous posters have suggested you contact your local church, or other faith group if more appropriate for you. That’s a good idea. I’m a parish minister and I would be more than happy to help out myself, or to put someone in touch with other local volunteers who’ve been helping make sure people have been able to get supplies this year.

The Salvation Army could be another useful contact if they are in your area.

Mindymomo · 28/11/2020 07:37

Ring local churches, they will have contact numbers for covid helpers in your area. Does your council have a helpline number to ring.

What about neighbours, could you pop a note through letterboxes asking for help with some shopping. I’m sure most people would help you.
