Online games etc for xmas

Magpiesalute · 27/11/2020 14:59

We’ve decided not to see my parents this Christmas due to the risk of passing on COVID.

Can anyone recommend some games that work well virtually, via Zoom or FaceTime?

Someone mentioned a murder mystery you could do, does anyone have a link?

Originally a cracker game, we often play xmas tunes with little bells after lunch. Everyone has a mini bell to ring and the tune to follow. I think we’re going to share the bells between our houses (post them out) and see if it’ll work online.

I know Pictionary could work.

Any other bright ideas? We’re all a bit miserable about not being together, so just trying to find something to lift our spirits!!

Fab thread OP. Watching with interest.

Ffsffsffsffsffs · 27/11/2020 15:33

I started a similar thread, zero responses so following!

I've ordered bingo books and will organise a 'each household does their own round' quiz. We all have Jenga so that will be good. Maybe articulate?

There's an old family game involving a chocolate bar, dice and lots of gloves and hats, might be worth investigating

Stellaris22 · 27/11/2020 15:35

As something a bit out there: D & D (Dungeons and Dragons)?

Great to get the whole family involved and you could have a Christmas themed campaign.

We did an online murder mystery through Macmillan. Worth seeing if it’s still available. We’ve also done an online escape room which was fun. Ours was a local breakout place selling the online game.

We've been doing a family online games night during lockdown with DS's girlfriend's family. So far we've done a quiz, Trivial Pursuit (as we both had boards) and Pictionary. Tonight we are doing an online escape game. Happy to report back tomorrow and update on how successful it's been!

Keepdistance · 27/11/2020 15:41

Something like headbandz

GettingTooOldForThis · 27/11/2020 18:03

There is a game called outsmarted I have just ordered that can be played on smart devices with one household having the board

Magpiesalute · 27/11/2020 18:46

Ooh thanks!! I like the idea of a murder mystery and an escape room. Report back @2gorgeousboys ? I’ll look up the others too... keep the ideas coming!

Also following. A quiz is all we have planned so far!

How old are your children? We play ‘Kids Against Maturity’ over zoom with my children’s grandparents. It’s basically a child’s version of ‘Cards Against Humanity’. It works really well! But totally depends what type of attitude you have towards more risky language - lots of fart, poo, butt jokes in it. My two find it hilarious (6 and 9). We always end up in stitches (probably shows my maturity level!)

hobbyiscodefordogging · 27/11/2020 19:53

@Ffsffsffsffsffs how do you play jenga on Zoom?

parrotonmyshoulder · 27/11/2020 20:06

My kids have managed Uno quite well with grandparents. They play with two decks of cards.
I love the idea of Kids against Maturity.
We have managed Pandemic really well, but not one for the children.
Pictionary or rapidough.
Charades
Love this thread

Magpiesalute · 27/11/2020 23:45

The kids are 8 and 10, I bet they’d find Kids Against Maturity funny, but I’m not sure my mum would!! Grin

I can recommend the site playingcards.io. It’s a great platform for playing card games virtually (plus they have a few simple board games), and you can customise the cards/decks depending on what you want to play. It saved my first lockdown!

mrssmiling · 28/11/2020 09:17

Great thread.
Here's the Macmillan link.

We've used this one playing together via Skype.

Pictionary and Scattergories both work well online.
@Ffsffsffsffsffs how do you play jenga on Zoom?
We all have Jenga in our separate households, just have to take turns to remove a block from your own tower. First to fall looses!

JaceLancs · 28/11/2020 18:47

Try jackbox tv - quite a few different games

Batinahat · 28/11/2020 20:19

I recommend Murdered For Money virtual murder mysteries...have done a couple and booked on a couple more. They are excellent value and great to support a group of actors who are out of work who have found a novel way to turn their work into something that works virtually

Magpiesalute · 30/11/2020 15:17

I’ll check it out, thanks!

Jack box tv is fun, it has a wide variety of games.

My dc also really enjoy among us, a who dunnit type game.

oxcat1 · 26/12/2020 11:01

Stupid question, but how would you play something like n escape room over Zoom?

Essentially I am looking for a game that 6 people (3 households) that don't know each that well can play. something that we can all participate in together, abs ideally can actually see each other and converse, rather than disappearing and coming back at the end.

Simple to learn, fun to play.
Any ideas?

I just don't really get how zoom online gaming works?

TW2013 · 26/12/2020 11:07

I think that you screen share on zoom oxcat1.

lughnasadh · 26/12/2020 11:07

What about 'Amongst You'?

We're trying it today, the more the merrier!

oxcat1 · 26/12/2020 11:43

I thought Amongst You looked quite complicated to pick up? One of the couples are pensioners, and the friend with me is not British so I feel trivia etc is a bit unfair.

So I set up the escape room, share the screen, abs everyone chips in with ideas on how to solve it?
