Any other health professionals applying to become an immuniser?

Just seen an appeal for people to apply to become immunisers to get the covid vaccine out. They are looking for any type of registered health professional from the look of things. Was trying to weigh up the pros and cons (under employed health professional here).

I was considering it (locum pharmacist who usually does flu vaccinations) but I think I'm approaching fully booked (4-5 days a week) from Jan-March of next year so not sure I can fit it in. If I wasn't already booked I would definitely do it

I would have done it but I’m on mat leave st the mo. I give vaccinations as part of my day to day job anyway.

muddled you are already doing your bit then if you are in the pharmacy, I'm on bank staff and there's been very low levels of coronavirus round here so I've been surplus to requirements. I got automatically given an NHS discount the other day and I felt like making them take it off, I've been no help!

Do either of you have any downsides to doing vaccinations, like hassle from antivaxers etc?

Nah I don’t usually, the people I deal with come to me for vaccines so they’re there proactively.

I would be interested in how they’re going to organise the supervision and who’s registration is responsible for the nonqualified vaccinators.

muddledmidget · 26/11/2020 15:35

No downsides, the only people who come for a flu jab are the people who want a flu jab, anti vaxxers just keep away, and I don't think they're going to be organising protests against the vaccination outside the premises. The anti-vaxxers in your family/friends (if there are any) don't have to know that you're involved. And the large flu vaccination clinics in church halls/conference centres/drive through seem to have been very well organised this year and have looked very safe (far safer than in consultation rooms in community pharmacy). Positives are: guaranteed work for the next 4 months or so and feeling useful. Put your application in!

And I think HCPs are all doing it under their own registration, my flu training was an online module followed by a 3 hour in person training session that didn't involve putting a needle into someone's arm?! My personal liability insurance covers me as long as I've completed the necessary training and am working under a signed PGD. Not sure about nonHCPs registration

MonkeyPuddle · 26/11/2020 15:39

From what I read on the job adverts it’s band 6 to oversee and organise the clinics, band 5 to draw up and band 2/3 to administer.

MonkeyPuddle · 26/11/2020 15:40

But I could be wrong, I was reading it during a night feed Grin

JacobReesMogadishu · 26/11/2020 15:43

I'll be doing it, more because I feel I should than for the money.

Also I'm a uni lecturer and lots of our students will be doing the administration, even social work students so I feel I want to help support the students as well.

I have had to learn to inject myself in my leg during this year for my B12 injections as GP stopped doing them. I just Googled what size syringes to order off the internet and watched some Youtube videos on how to do it, no problem! If only they could send me my vaccine, I would do it myselfGrin

ExCwmbranDweller · 26/11/2020 16:02

transcriptionerror if only everyone were like you that would be awesome wouldn't it. Mind you then they'd be desperately looking for an army of posties instead!

I'll get my application in then, I'm so impatient for them to start because it will feel like we are coming to the end of this horrible time so I'd better do my bit. Plus a tiny bit of me just wants to always be able to say I helped.

Interesting about the training. I had to learn how to place a butterfly for work and the people on the course had us practicing on each other and then they sent us home with a handful of extra bits and told us to practice on adult family members. Can't decide if patients would feel better or worse knowing my guinea pigs were relatives not them.

I've got the application for the band 5 job, there's not a lot of info in the advert as to what's expected but that's fine. Hopefully I'll get the job as the last line is Help Us! and if that comes back as a no I'll know I'm in real trouble Grin
