Staying at Air BNB in tier 3 areas?

Rosehip10 · 26/11/2020 13:19

Is there any clarity on this? Can one stay at AirBNB in a tier 3 area from 2 december? (As in an entire place, rather than a room in house)

If it's for a holiday then no you can't, your not to leave a tier 3 area or come into a tier 3 area for an overnight stay unless for certain reasons.

We are in a tier 3 area (a lowish case part of Kent) and had a cottage booked from the 3rd in a tier 2 area. I imagine that’s going to be cancelled.

Ridiculously, though, the government has said it’s fine for people in tier 3 areas to go on overseas holiday. So we can’t go to an isolated cottage in Devon but we could catch a plane and holiday in Greece. Confused

Actually government is advising against all unnecessary trips in tier three, no staying overnight unless essential, nowhere does it say you can go abroad, it's just not illegal (and it never has been even now in lockdown)

And yet:

The transport secretary, Grant Shapps, said tier 3 residents would be able to go abroad.

Speaking on the BBC’s Today programme, he said holidays would be allowed abroad – “if you're going straight to an airport”.

The government later confirmed that there will be no legal impediment to travelling on holiday from anywhere in England – subject to outbound and inbound rules.

I presume that's because you are allowed to go on holiday but uk holiday accommodation providers arent allowed to operate ergo you have have nowhere to stay. But Greek accommodation providers come under greek law and are allowed to operate.

But U.K. holiday operators/hotels in tier 1 & 2 areas are open.

From the Telegraph:

One of the strangest of inconsistencies surrounding the latest Covid-19 restrictions was confirmed this week, says Nick Trend. After December 2, people living in Tier 3 in England will be advised not to travel to other parts of the UK for a holiday, for fear of the risk of spreading the virus. But they will be allowed to travel abroad. Where is the logic in that? Is this even an ethical distinction to make?

Logic was further cast to the winds when the Transport Secretary Grant Shapps attempted to justify the new rules by saying that “we’re not as a government in the business of telling people whether they can’t [sic] travel”. Yup, that’s right – this is the responsible minister in the very same government which continues to tell us when and where we can travel. And just in case we thought he might have “mis-spoken” he went on to affirm “I’m not trying to tell people what they should and shouldn’t do with regard to travel”. I had to replay the interview several times to make sure I wasn’t hearing things.

If I can go from tier 3 to abroad so long as I follow the lockdown rules there, surely I can go on "holiday" to a UK tier 2 or 1, so long as I follow the rules there.

"The rulez" are nonsensical nonsense.

Rosehip10 · 26/11/2020 15:39

I doubt many airbnb places in tier 2/3 areas are going to interrogate people about where they are travelling from.

The National Trust did last time (prior to the latest lockdown).

The advice on travel is guidance, not law. Unless the place you're planning to stay at cancels your booking then legally you should be able to go ahead with your plans.

The National Trust did last time (prior to the latest lockdown).

They were also forcing people to book in advance to walk around in an open air garden - so not a lot of common sense there.

They’re still doing that I think!

If I lived in a lower risk area, I wouldn’t want people from high risk areas coming for holiday. After a shit year, we have cancelled next weeks hotel stay in the lakes for my husbands birthday as it isn’t essential travel. The longer we keep fannying about, the longer it’ll go on for.
