Where can I breastfeed during lockdown?

I'm walking into town later to do some essential chores & I'll probably need to breastfeed DD at some point. Is there anywhere indoors I can do this during lockdown or will I have to sit on a bench in the freezing cold (& possibly rain)?

Well legally you can do it anywhere but I’m not sure what will be open near you. Maybe a chair in a corner of M&S?

DownWhichOfLate · 26/11/2020 10:11

Anywhere that is open. More upmarket shops might help out with a chair. Maybe even doctor surgery? Though not the nicest place to sit. Limited to options!

Doctors surgeries are like Fort Knox to get into at the moment highly doubt they will let you in there plus they will have planned social distancing around planned patients....

Most large shopping centres have breast feeding rooms - I'd ask there

To be honest unless these chores were absolutely urgent I wouldn't risk it

JC12345 · 26/11/2020 10:19

Boots (or other pharmacies) sometimes have a private room that you can use.

DownWhichOfLate · 26/11/2020 10:20

In the past I’ve been allowed to sit in an empty consultation room to breastfeed. It was after my baby had their jabs. Different areas have different rules. Our GP
Surgery wasn’t letting people wait inside but now do.

EminyBOO · 26/11/2020 10:28

A pharmacy might be a good option, they usually have chairs.
Large supermarkets may have a feeding room.
Coffee shop, although seating is closed they might let you sit down for a bit if you ask.
Indoor shopping centres often have benches.
Public loo (last resort obvs)
Do you use a sling? Can you feed in it (I could never get the hang of it)
Bus shelter

Mrsjayy · 26/11/2020 10:35

Boots or superdrug will have chairs of you are desperate hopefully you won't be out too long and can get there and back before baby needs fed

Emmacb82 · 26/11/2020 10:50

Can you not time it around feeds? I used to feed mine just before I left the house and then popped out to do my bits and get back home before the next feed. Sometimes I would break the jobs up so I spread them over a couple of days so I wasn’t out for too long. Obviously if I had no option I would have fed him whilst out but at the moment there aren’t too many places around. Are supermarket cafes open to sit in? Not to eat but wonder whether you could just sit in there x

Thanks for all the suggestions, hopefully one of them will be available if needed Smile

Was going to suggest boots or Superdrug - SIL friend had the same problem and asked a pharmacist in boots who let her sit in the consultation cubicle thing. She posted on FB to let all her bf friends in our town know just incase they were caught out.

NekoShiro · 26/11/2020 12:27

You can breastfeed in any shop, no one can stop you and if they do they're ignorant and one of their colleagues will correct them for you.

Thespottytortoise · 26/11/2020 13:17

I'd just feed outside. Cold tit only lasts a couple of seconds until baby is there to warm it up. Obviously not for today, but definitely get a warm feeding hoodie.

Mrsjayy · 26/11/2020 14:04

The op wasn't worried about being stopped breastfeeding with area lockdown she was just looking for idea of where to go only essential shops are open

Avery7 · 26/11/2020 16:18

Well she ended up sleeping the whole time I was out! Thanks for the advice anyway Smile

I fed my dd sitting on snow at a ski resort once, hard to deal with the coats etc but she didn't care. Babies are more flexible than us!

Mrsjayy · 26/11/2020 20:45

Least you had a plan just incase she woke upSmile
