School lunches AIBU?

Hello
Just wanting other people's opinions and wondering what other schools are doing.
My sons class is sitting outside for lunch so basically picnics everyday I haven't had a problem with this but now the weathers changed and we are in Yorkshire it's been freezing! Today was 4 degrees and they sat outside he's came out so upset that he can't hold his food properly and wear his gloves, his pack lunch is always covered in mud and it seems to just be his year my other child at the same school sits in his classroom for lunch. Iv messaged the teacher but no response as yet so will be seeing them tomorrow over it , but am I being unreasonable to ask if they sit in the class where the risk is no greater as the children sit there together anyway to learn?

How old are they? If under 7 YANBU but over that age it's not really a big deal. Why is his packed lunch covered in mud though? Don't they have anywhere to place them? Are they putting their boxes on the floor?

Bloody ridiculous. Our kids eat in their classrooms in their bubbles. We wipe the tables down before and after. Is there some reason why your sons school can’t do this?

chunkyfunk · 23/11/2020 21:26

He's 7 but my other child is 9 and his class is indoors for lunch which makes no sense to me as surely the younger ones inside ( not that I think any of them should be outside)
They sit on the floor Sad the mud is from where the field and playground join together . I wouldn't mind as much if they had somewhere to sit but on the cold floor in this weather honestly doesn't sit right with me.

Why can't they just sit in their classrooms?! Find this very bizarre, I have a y4 child and they just sit in their classroom to have lunch.

I think I'd contact the school and ask why this isn't an option.

RaggieDolls · 23/11/2020 21:35

Shock poor little guy. This can't be right. My DC eat in the lunch hall or in their classroom. There is a rotation system with three lunch windows for the seven classes.

I don't understand what they are trying to achieve. They presumably all sit together for lessons and if anyone in the bubble tests positive they will all have to isolate. I can't see the advantage to eating outside.

KittCat · 23/11/2020 21:39

Jesus Christ yanbu! I'd be complaining very loudly.

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 23/11/2020 23:42

I’d be very angry about that and complaining very vocally

Sb2012 · 23/11/2020 23:45

My primary kids eat in the dining hall on a rota system. One bubble at a time. Why would they ask any child to sit on the cold ground to eat lunch. That’s really not acceptable

Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 23/11/2020 23:48

Ours are eating in the classroom. I would not be happy about this. Not sure why it would be any better if the child was over 7? I wouldn't be earing outside in this weather so children shouldn't have to its fuckinv freezing and makes no sense at all.

Shadeelane · 23/11/2020 23:52

They probably can't provide staff to supervise. There aren't enough lunchtime staff to cover every single class so I think in some schools teachers are working through their lunch in order to supervise their class. Seems harsh though.

Smallwhiterat · 24/11/2020 00:01

At the very least they could let them take their chair outside with them! Mine are all eating in classrooms or dining hall. Not sure it’s much warmer with doors open but they do at least have a seat. What are they going to do when it rains, sit in a puddle?

PirateCatQueen · 24/11/2020 00:14

A room, a bar and a class-how the coronavirus is spread

Is it possible they can’t ventilate his classroom properly? Apparently emptying a room for a while can make a difference, stops build up in the air.

RaggieDolls · 24/11/2020 06:13

I take your point @PirateCatQueen but primary classrooms are emptied when the children go out to play which is three times a day if this child is still in yr2.

chunkyfunk · 24/11/2020 09:22

Spoke to the head today and he's putting something in place this week. So fingers crossed no more sitting outside!
Thanks for everyone's input 😘
