Gyms can open, stadiums of thousands can open but not a dance or yoga class for 10 people!

I don't get it. Does someone have the science as to how it's more dangerous to be in a yoga class, on your mat, 2m from someone else, than on a treadmill, and then a rowing machine, and then a stepper than several other people have used before you? Why is my son's swimming class allowed to reopen but not my daughter's gymnastics? I get that it's outdoors, but having thousands of people in a stadium, presumably using the same loos and corridors to watch a match, why is that okay but not a dance class of a dozen people in their own space?

I know with pools it's because chlorine kills the virus and the air systems circulate clean air continuously.

My sons a swimmer.

Even then to be covid secure they go beach ready and wear masks until they have undressed poolside.
And even though covered in said chlorine the blocks must be cleaned between each swimmer!

wendz86 · 23/11/2020 17:57

Does it not say organised activities for under 18’s can continue? I would say from reading that the gymnastics can go on if under 18 but agree doesn’t make much sense about the adult fitness classes .

ILookAtTheFloor · 23/11/2020 18:07

Kids gymnastics can definitely continue in all tiers. My girls do dance and I'm so happy they'll be able to go back to their lessons 😁😁

I love yoga too, but you can't really compare it to spectators in a stadium, as outside we know the risk is tiny. Even in a distanced yoga class, it's warm and enclosed. I knew it was a risk when I did it last month, I'm happy to take that risk.

I do understand it, I'd still go if allowed to.

NotAKaren · 23/11/2020 18:14

Looks like indoors for under 18 is permitted

Delatron · 23/11/2020 19:54

Is small group exercise allowed in tier 2 I can’t work it out? So indoor yoga on 1-2-1 basis or less than 6?

I thought since gyms were opening it would be allowed but I’m wondering now (this is my business).

Jessuk86 · 23/11/2020 20:41

I’m confused about this I’ve just booked online for Pilates and yoga next Thursday but not sure if it’ll happen or I’ll just have to book super early to get one of the lucky 5 spaces!!

TheSunIsStillShining · 23/11/2020 20:41

So: schools, sports and basically everything for under 18s is allowed in all tiers.
T1/T2 pubs/restaurants can be open until 11.
All retail open in all tiers.
All entertainment open in t1/t2.

In uk the virus is obviously intelligent enough to know:

  • don't go into schools
  • don't infect in u18 sport things
  • only infect in pubs/restaurants after 11.
  • shops are not places to infect people.

Why bother with tiers when there is really not that drastic difference at all? This is not an action plan it's a show'n tell on what NOT to do in a pandemic.

Primary aged children could run this country better.

Lurkingforawhile · 23/11/2020 20:43

Previously we still had our indoor aerobics class even those more six, because we were more than 2m apart. I'm sure it was allowed but I guess we'll have to wait for Sport England advice this time

Delatron · 23/11/2020 20:45

It says in tier two ‘exercise classes will be allowed if people can avoid mixing with people they don’t live with’.

What does that even mean?

Comefromaway · 23/11/2020 20:48

I’m on a group of people who run classes. In tiers 1 & 2 adult classes will be allowed as long as there is no interaction (tier 2) and no more than 6 interacting (tier 1). So that means the classes can go ahead, socially distanced but you mustn’t socialise before, during or after the class.

In Northern Ireland gyms have been allowed to open since the start of July, including classes. Then classes were banned for our circuit breaker from mid October. So I can't go and stand in my marked out box using one single kettle bell or plate doing what the instructor says. ... but I can go to the gym and use various machines and kettle bells. Anyway, gyms are closing too from Friday onwards.

I don't think anyone argued for gyms to stay open back in March, but the rules now (not just Northern Ireland) don't make sense to the average person......

Splodgetastic · 23/11/2020 20:56

I wondered whether the mixing was just to rule out contact such as boxing / body combat / karate.

ListeningQuietly · 23/11/2020 21:38

The current guidance for December clearly says no classes bigger than 6
in the lowest risk areas
which is not financially viable for most studios / instructors

Comefromaway · 23/11/2020 21:49

No, it says that classes can take place if there is no interaction in Tier 2. When the detailed guidance comes out in the next few days it is likely the rule of 6 i tier 1 will remain the same interpretation as previously.

Gyms can open, stadiums of thousands can open but not a dance or yoga class for 10 people!

Rule of 6 applies to indoor classes in Tier 1 ....

Comefromaway · 23/11/2020 22:02

The rule of 6 has always applied. There are no changes in this wording than the previous wording.

Lurkingforawhile · 23/11/2020 22:20

That's good news if it's the same as before. Expecting my class to continue. It really is very well arranged - huge space, exit via the fire door, couldn't be safer (indoors that is)

Comefromaway · 23/11/2020 22:21

Easier to comply in a dance or yoga class. More difficult in a theatre group.

timeforanewstart · 23/11/2020 22:29

Because 1000 in a stadium that holds 40000 will have a lot more room to sd than a exercise class pf 20 that only holds 40 max

VikingsandDragons · 23/11/2020 23:41

As far as I can tell (and I'm using yoga as the example as it's very similar to what my business does, everyone has a defined space with a piece of equipment, they don't move around the room, but can run in all tiers for under 18s. Can run in tier 1, tier 2 only if no one talks to each other or touches shared equipment (so for example netball wouldn't work), and tier 3 it's just a flat no. But I could have people come into the studio and use that same equipment in a gym format, just no one can stand at the front and tell them how to use it for best results.

Delatron · 24/11/2020 07:22

I’m still confused. In tier 2 can small group exercise inside with an instructor run? I think it’s the wording of the document.

I understand the rule of 6 in tier 1 and I was under that last time and adhered to that.

MaudesMum · 24/11/2020 07:30

My pilates class has maximum numbers now of 8, but was regularly attended by 5 of us (with others on zoom). Everyone in marked out spaces, no shared equipment (we all now bring our own bands/mats etc). We all enter and leave separately, with only person at any one time in the small corridor space, so no mingling. So, if we end up in tier 2, which I suspect we will, I'll be very cross if it can't continue.

KatherineJaneway · 24/11/2020 07:33

Does someone have the science as to how it's more dangerous to be in a yoga class, on your mat, 2m from someone else, than on a treadmill, and then a rowing machine, and then a stepper than several other people have used before you?

In my gym you clean the machine you want before and after you use it.

Lurkingforawhile · 24/11/2020 08:36

Here is the tier two guidance from Sport England: Indoor sport can take place within households, and people can take part in group activity like exercise classes as long as there is no mixing between households. People can play certain sports which do not involve close proximity or physical contact against one person from another household, such as a singles tennis match or badminton match.

As expected gym classes are back on with social distancing Grin

Lurkingforawhile · 24/11/2020 08:37

Sorry for those of you in tier three where it's a definite no
