Will some people stay in their own personal lockdown even after vaccines?

Earlier this year, and even into the summer when things looked better, there were a lot of people who wanted to stay as locked down as they possibly possibly could despite not being vulnerable or shielding or living with anyone who was. People saying they would homeschool until vaccines rolled out for children, not taking babies out of the house at all because they can look out of the windows if they need to see the world, that sort of thing.

I think life will ping back to normal fairly fast around/after spring, and a lot quicker than many people think. But curious about what's going to happen with the people who were that worried about leaving the house earlier on. Will they all be happy to go back to their lives when mass vaccinations are over and cases are down to near nothing? Or are we going to see a small number of very anxious people too worried to leave their houses for the long term, or waiting years until they're happier to take the vaccine? What do you think?

(asking entirely out of curiosity, and asking about the future, please do not huff at me for not understanding how scary it is to be CEV/shielded/already dealing with anxiety at a time when the virus is all over the place and there's no licensed vaccine)

We're a CEV/CV household (of two) and once we are both vaccinated (and allowed the two weeks or whatever for it to "take") we will not be staying in A MOMENT LONGER!

We won't be rushing out to do anything daft, but having been severely restricted since March, we can't wait to see family again, and maybe even have a meal out. To be fair, we'd rather walk on the beach than go into a shop, so perhaps our lifestyle is reasonably "safe" anyway.

We have followed every rule to the letter and cannot wait to have the vaccine.

I won’t be personally having the vaccine neither will my dh or adult dc. But we will go back to normal once things improve

frozendaisy · 23/11/2020 17:07

God no, when vaccine is rolled out we will all be licking bar stools again!

rosie1959 · 23/11/2020 17:08

Also cannot wait to have the vaccine will resume normal life as soon as possible
We love to holiday in the channel isles and cannot imagine for one moment they will let you in without being vaccinated

Ethelfleda · 23/11/2020 17:09

I think they may do for a while... until the media stops reporting on Covid every 5 minutes and everyone else moves on.

SheepandCow · 23/11/2020 17:13

Lots of disabled people. Mobility issues, etc. I hope the public concern over the mental health effect of isolation leads to better support. Pre pandemic not that many people cared.

Improve because other people have the vaccine?

AgeLikeWine · 23/11/2020 17:38

No, of course not.

As an over-50 asthmatic I have been ultra-cautious since March, and I want my life back. As soon as I’m vaccinated I will be out & about enjoying my life again. I will also be grateful to the amazing scientists who have enabled that to happen for the rest of my life.

Crazycatlady83 · 23/11/2020 17:41

But if you don’t have the vaccine, things won’t “improve” for you! Covid will still be here and you will still be liable to catch it and pass it! It’s fine, if that’s your choice. But the vaccines doesn’t appear - at first sight - to give a high enough percentage for “herd immunity” - if that is what you are banking on. You might be lucky and only get mild symptoms, you might not. Good luck with that.....

SandysMam · 23/11/2020 17:44

I hope people continue to wash hands properly rather than a quick flick under the tap I see so often in public loos 🤮

But I also hope people live life and are grateful for it and the freedoms we had previously, I know I will be if we are lucky enough for this situation to resolve.

KittenCalledBob · 23/11/2020 17:44

My Dad is ECV and my parents have been very very careful since March - not only sticking to the guidance, but far more cautious than that. They can't wait to get vaccinated and relax a bit!

I'm interested, why won't you? Because you won't be eligible or because you don't want to?

The success rate of the best vaccine are only 95%. Many will be relying on at least 70% of the population to have the vaccine in order to get herd immunity and get back to "normal". Vaccinating the vulnerable won't be good enough.

pinkpip100 · 23/11/2020 18:06

My youngest daughter is vulnerable (previously CEV) and it sounds as though under 18s won't be getting the vaccine anytime soon, so she won't be protected even if/when the full adult rollout has happened. We won't stay 'locked down' as you describe it OP - I certainly wouldn't describe our current situation as lockdown anyway, as I have 3 other children going to secondary schools everyday and I work in early years. But yes, we will have to continue to be very cautious for a long time, from what I can see.
I wouldn't describe myself as 'very anxious' btw.

GoldenOmber · 23/11/2020 18:35

No I’m sure, and as I did try to make clear, I was talking more about the anxieties of people who had been very drastically locking themselves down previously despite not being vulnerable or shielding or living with anyone who was.

Fuck that

sally067 · 23/11/2020 18:58

My boss wants to stay in lockdown and loves it, she wants masks, social distancing, etc to stay in effect permanently. She has quite severe health anxiety though and is the type who mops her shopping down and quarantines her post, she will also refuse to have the vaccine. She has barely stepped out of her house since March too.

I think those people probably need professional help.
RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 23/11/2020 19:07

There was a good podcast on this with Sam Harris. Bsaically human nature/history suggests that a significant minority will find it hard to get back to 'normal'. Lots of different reasons, some genuine fear, others have got used to being less sociable, some people will have mental health issues around it that will take awhile to 'fix' etc.

He reckoned that most people will be out and about within 6 months to a year of vaccine roll-out. But some will take 2 years. He reckoned that then there would be a 'roaring twenties' scenario again - but not realistically until mid 2023/2024.

Interesting.

Funkypolar · 23/11/2020 19:08

I know somebody who hasn’t left home since March and said they won’t leave home again as COVID will be floating around forever.

kittensarecute · 23/11/2020 19:10

No chance in hell. Not a moment longer than necessary, I'm itching to enjoy my life again. And I will definitely have the vaccine.

Cannot wait for the vaccine and for my life to go back to normal! The more people have the jab and the quicker we do it, the quicker social distancing ends for everyone!!
Shocked by people not having the vaccine and willing to risk Covid for the rest of their lives. Madness
