Self isolating in the family home - WIBU?

DW started with covid symptoms yesterday and had a swab today - awaiting results. So obviously we are all self isolating. Now following the guidance I thought it would be sensible to try and minimise contact to reduce the risk of the rest of us catching it. So I planned to move into the spare room and to try and keep apart where possible. But we’ve just had a huge argument with DW saying she feels ignored and abandoned left by herself. She really doesn’t want me to go in the spare room. I get that it’s boring and miserable but I’m only doing it to try and keep the rest of the family safe. I’m planning on doing all the cooking and such to reduce the risk to us. Her view is that we’ll probably all get it anyway so we should carry on as normal in the home.

Who is being unreasonable here?

I've been dreading if dh gets symptoms, would be tricky to get him to stay away from us as he just does what he feels like. I would have to break it down in to steps, eg "ok so the law says this" "until we know for sure this precaution seems sensible, do you agree?" etc. which step does your dw not agree with?

Dh had what we thought was covid back in May. Although he tested negative twice. Ds (then 2.5) also had symptoms. Tested negative twice.

Dh stayed in our room. I camped on dds floor. Ds bounced back fairly quickly and then the 3 of us just kept our of Dhs way as much as we could.

With both dc under 3 at the time it was tough.

But if either one of us is ill they stay in our room and the other sleeps elsewhere. Means no disturbed nights. And the well one is more able to help the sicky

She's being unreasonable. I've been stuck in my bedroom (excluding bathroom trips) since Friday lunch time until this evening when my negative result came in. It was surprisingly quite a struggle mentally, but I wouldn't dream of putting my dh and young dc at risk.

YABU

@ThisMustBeMyDream I don’t think there have been many (if any) cases of people having false positives.
I’m glad you recovered quickly and hopefully your husband will be feeling much better soon too. It’s a worrying time 😔

TheDowagerDuchess · 22/11/2020 20:26

She sounds very unreasonable. It really pisses me off when people don’t do their best to keep their germs to themselves at the best of times! With COVID 19, if it’s possible to isolate one member of the family that’s what should happen.

Not possible in our house with me as a single parent!

Surely (assuming you have a spare room) you would always sleep separately if one of you had anything that might be contagious? I wouldn't share my bed with DH if he had a cold or upset stomach - nor would he want to share with me if I was unwell.

I do find it odd when couples can't bear to spend a night apart .... but no doubt people think we are odd as we rarely share a bed Grin.

@Humpty11, I meant false negative Grin.

We're moving this to the coronavirus topic area now OP

Humpty11 · 23/11/2020 06:53

@ThisMustBeMyDream ah right, but it’s really not that uncommon. I worked on a covid ward through the first wave and there were patients who didn’t test positive on swabs more than 3 times but there bloods and X-rays were clinically covid so it is still possible. The swabs are only about 70% accurate even now.

middleager · 23/11/2020 07:04

She is BU. My son tested positive last night but ever since his first symptoms on Fri night we've all slept and been separate in the house as much as we can.
It's the mature and safe thing to do and overrides needy feelings .
