COVID toes

Has anyone had any experience of this, particularly in children?

My DC is isolating at home for two weeks after a positive case in the year group at school.

Tonight DC is complaining of a red and itchy toe, similar to a chilblain, and quite hot and slightly sore to the touch. A couple of other toes are possibly slightly red but nothing to write home about. I've given anti-histamine but no change so far. No other symptoms and seemingly well otherwise.

I've seen reports that this can be a symptom but it doesn't seem to be on the NHS list?

Should I try and get a test if it is still there in the next day or so? Or should I ignore it absent any other symptoms?

Thanks in advance.

The chillblains are a well recognised symptom, particularly in children. I wouldn't normally suggest getting a test without the 3 main symptoms, but I actually would in this case.

If in doubt I would call your GP.

Many thanks, that's very interesting. I might do that, as we don't seem eligible for a test if I try and book one online. Presumably a GP can bypass that/otherwise authorise it?

I had COVID in March, before the tests were widely available. Having COVID toe was what finally convinced me, despite also having the cough, temperature and exhaustion.
It was very painful, like needles in the toes, fortunately only lasted a couple of days.

Bumblebee - that's very interesting. I hope you are fully recovered.

DC was complaining about it last night, but managed to get to sleep ok, so it can't have been too bad. I will see how it is today and, if the same, or worse I'll arrange a test.

While the timing could be a coincidence, I am beginning to think this is probably unlikely.

DD has had a weird chillblain on one of her toes for several days. I assumed it was a normal chillblain as she always sits too close to the woodburner. No other symptoms. I didn't know about this being a symptom of covid in children. DH and I both had covid in Feb/March before testing so can't be absolutely certain. Going to get a test for her Sad

Yes I'd get a test. It's daft they are following the main symptom rule for dc when typically they don't display those. Perhaps just pop down that he has a temperature on the online application

I'm not a child, obviously, but I had covid toes. For me, it was all my toes, not just one or two, and there was no pain or itching - that was how my GP ruled out chilblains, although at the time covid toes wasn't known to be a thing so he didn't know what it was. Basically, I had purple toes for a few days.
