Ds2 Y9 self isolating for the 3rd time. Is this unusual ?

Ds finished 2nd episode of self isolation on tues, back at school wednesday.
Thurday evening we received a text telling him to self isolate again....after 2 days at school Confused I'm tempted to contact school on monday to make sure they were aware he was previously self isolating...hoping that it's a mistake and he's been included because he was on the class register for that subject. Anyone else have a child who's in and out like this ?

Mine is also on 3rd time , absolute nightmare and I’m dreading this happening the week before Christmas...

H1978 · 20/11/2020 18:15

Not mine personally but nephew (year 9) doing third self isolation since September.

Pipandmum · 20/11/2020 18:17

No don't know anyone who's had to self isolate. I have kids in Y11 and 13, know kids at another school. I think only half of year 8 had to isolate that's it. You guys have been unlucky!

noblegiraffe · 20/11/2020 18:21

It's because transmission in schools isn't being controlled and sending home limited numbers of pupils without any further testing isn't working. Secondary pupils are the most infected subset of the population, infection rates are rising and they are still allowed to mingle freely in scenarios that would be illegal anywhere else.

It's not going to improve any time soon as the government is refusing to admit there's a problem. Please write to your MP to point out the reality of what is going on in the local area.

Africa2go · 20/11/2020 18:27

3rd time is unlucky but everyone I know has had senior school children sent home at least once. 3 children here, Y7-Yr11. One hasn't had to self isolate yet, 1 child has done one stint, 1 child coming to end of second stint.

PeachiceT · 20/11/2020 19:04

Yr 10 at dc school are isolating for 2nd time and the 2nd one got extended further for a second identified case

CarryOnWalking · 20/11/2020 21:06

My y8 is on his second isolation.
Other years at the same school haven’t had any (yet).

Coasterfan · 20/11/2020 21:21

I have year 8 and year 6, no isolating here yet luckily, I m sure it will happen though although so far there’s only been a handful of cases in each school.

ScrapThatThen · 20/11/2020 22:05

One of dds friends is on third time.

Flagsfiend · 21/11/2020 06:58

Unlucky but not unusual. I teach at a largish secondary, roughly 1500 students. I think about 15 have done 3 isolations, around 100 have done 2, and a further 300 just the 1 so far.

Sb2012 · 21/11/2020 07:50

Third time for my DC too. I believe it varies from school to school. Some schools are not sending whole classes/bubbles home only the students sat either side of the child tested positive. Think cases are high everywhere now just depends how the school handles it.

Schonerlebnis · 21/11/2020 08:08

Dc now tells me it's someone in his english class. Ironic really. He was the only student pulled out of his english class to self isolate last time. He's not in till 2 dec now.

Same here. Everyone I know with children in Secondary schools has had them sent home at least once. Quite a few are on their second stint of self isoaltion, and an unlucky group of year 11s have had to do so 3 times. Sad
lljkk · 21/11/2020 08:17

Neither of school age DC & they haven't mentioned any friends being isolated either. There were 4 cases among pupils at the 6th form that big DS recently told us about., didn't seem to affect anyone. The high school (yr7-11) sent a message about a positive case but I didn't see it (think only DH saw it). Didn't affect my DC. Adult DC on residential training courses in other parts of England don't seem to be affected either.

fabricstash · 21/11/2020 08:41

My y9 has not had to isolate at all yet and we are in Bristol so there are local high rates. School have handled it well and have notified us when there are COVID cases

LynetteScavo · 21/11/2020 08:46

Not mine, but a colleague has resigned because her DD has been asked by school to self isolate three times so far.

Porcupineinwaiting · 21/11/2020 08:51

No isolation yet for either of mine but 80 kids from ds1's year currently in isolation so I'm sure it's just a matter of time for both. Rates are v high here though.

Danglingmod · 21/11/2020 08:51

Max once per year group in my school so far. We've been very lucky compared to other local schools. A relative has had 3 x isolation periods in year 11. Year 13 have barely been in in most of our sixth forms. Year 9/10 also very badly hit.

But, yes, it makes sense it's often the same children getting hit if not a whole year group because only "close" contacts are now sent home, there will be spread by mildly symptomatic or asymptomatic children among the remaining friendship group or class until someone new gets tested and then they're out again. It's just going to get worse if we continue the minimise the numbers sent home (and don't get children tested with any of the WHO symptoms)

wonderstuff · 21/11/2020 08:55

Very few kids at the school I work out have had to isolate but a couple in year 11 have been out 3 times, really really unlucky, must be so frustrating.

happytoday73 · 21/11/2020 08:55

We are in greater Manchester so very high rates. My secondary age child hasn't had to isolate at all (yet) but others in year have and one year totally out early on. Only 1 class bubble has bust up to now in primary so we are 🤞 doing well.

gildalilly · 21/11/2020 09:13

My ds on his first isolation (year 9) but at his school I think it's only year 7 who have been in throughout. Years 10 and 11 have been out twice each and years 8 and 9 once each. This is Scarborough where rates are very high currently.

Schonerlebnis · 21/11/2020 09:27

Re bubbles, none of the covid positive students have been close friends of ds, just students in his class. My concern is that this will impact on gcse grades. Luckily ds has a pretty good work ethic and no learning issues but surely it's a disadvantage not physically being in the class ? Hope some leeway will be given if necessary..

My husband works in a sixth form college. He knows of a member of staff there who is currently having to self-isolate for the seventh time.

starrynight19 · 21/11/2020 09:40

Yes my dd y11 has had to do three lots of isolation. This week was her first full week in school since September.
It’s just constant and down to luck and postcode.

middleager · 21/11/2020 09:53

My one year 10 has just finished his third lot due to cases at school. He was back in school for two days and hasn't been anywhere in SI and then only school and now has developed a high temperature and gone for a test, so now he faces even more time off.
