Do you really keep DC indoors for 14 days?

DS's school year has been sent home for 14 days because someone in his year has covid. I know we are supposed to keep him indoors the whole time. But what have people really done in practice? It's a very long time not to walk further than the bathroom.

@onedayintgefuture but some are saying they would go to tesco and you realise some don't live somewhere they can go for a socially diatanced walk in the middle of nowhere so what do those people do they have no choice, do you not think people should at least even try to isolate

And I honestly believe some Mumsnetters just enjoy being rule and law breakers aka as criminals.
If there was never going to be a vaccine or treatment of any kind and we were expected to isolate repeatedly forever, even people like you would eventually become a rule breaker.

wurlycurly · 17/11/2020 21:56

I can’t believe some of frothing mouth stuff on here. It’s worth reminding ourselves that transmission rates outside are very low, you’re not going to get covid from walking past someone outside, it doesn’t spread that way. Spare a thought for people who have no garden... it doesn’t seem to occur to people that some people with small children have no private access to outside space.
@OverTheRainbow88 maybe I wasn’t clear , my dc spent 20 weeks /140 days with zero breaks in between without leaving their home and garden. So yes your year 11 can cope with 8 weeks spread out in four blocks. Incidentally I have a year 11 so she did March to August plus 3 x 14 days.
Why?

Fcuk38 · 17/11/2020 21:57

I took mine out for walks as we can where I live we won’t meet anyone. She also came for rides in the car and then sat in the car whilst i Went in the shop etc.

timeforanewstart · 17/11/2020 21:57

@borntohula but if we never get a grip on this virus part lockdowns maybe the way for years and thats not good for anyone so for now if we have to isolate I would at least give it my best shot

timeforanewstart · 17/11/2020 21:58

@wurlycurly if zero risk why do most countries that im aware of not allow a sd walk outside

Bubblemonkey · 17/11/2020 21:59

I felt bad going to collect the bin after eyeballing to make sure there was nobody around 😬 couldn’t imagine going properly out when isolating.

saraclara · 17/11/2020 22:00

How does one 'bump into others' in woodland or a field? Seriously?

You're outdoors in the fresh air, you can see them coming and you can avoid them by many metres. Can anyone give me the science that says that someone isolating can pass the virus (which they probably don't have anyway) to anyone in those conditions?

wurlycurly · 17/11/2020 22:00

God knows

timeforanewstart · 17/11/2020 22:01

@wurlycurly often those without a garden will also have a communual entrance so will really struggle to get outside without risk of bumping into people and i bet its disheartening for them to hear that some with perfectly useable gardens are going for walks when they are stuck in with no outside space

I think they see everyone else as flesh eating zombies.

wintertravel1980 · 17/11/2020 22:02

if its zero risk why do no countries allow people with covid to go outside

UK did allow people with COVID to go outside back in spring but the government was accused of "complex and inconsistent messaging" so they "simplified", i.e. tightened the rules.

The reality is that asking people (non household contacts of confirmed cases) to self-isolate for 14 days might not be a proportionate response. Based on test and trace data from South Korea, only 1.8% of non household contacts of infected individuals end up testing positive:

wwwnc.cdc.gov/eid/article/26/10/20-1315_article

This risk combined with extremely low probability of infecting anyone on a socially distanced walk outdoors makes the current self-isolation requirements look disproportionate. I am a big proponent of replacing blanket quarantine with regular testing. Yes, it is true that testing will not pick up infections during the incubation period, however, given the low level of compliance with self-isolation rules it may still produce a much better outcome.

@Hormonecrazyhell

My ds did not leave the house or garden from lockdown start / July. Why can’t people just do as they’re are advised
Again, why?

Yep. Many people will have to use lifts or narrow stairwells and can't avoid others.

user1471467679 · 17/11/2020 22:06

My son ( year 11) stayed at home. Didn’t leave our house or garden for 14 days. BUT we had a garden and space, and it nearly pushed him (and us) over the edge. God know how he could have done it in a tiny flat.

Yup, this.

I can't go outside without being very close to an awful lot of people, many of whom are only following the rules they want to, so not respecting distances, masks, etc. But hey, as long as everybody follows the rules they think are sensible, it's OK, right?

timeforanewstart · 17/11/2020 22:07

Many do not have the luxury on living next to a deserted woodland or empty fields ,many live in a built up area where keeping 2 m apart is not always guaranteef

caringcarer · 17/11/2020 22:07

During the first lockdown my DS learned to play chess. He is very sporty and we dreaded lock down with all his sports clubs closed but he was fine and learned s new skill too. He still plays against people on internet now.

MadameBlobby · 17/11/2020 22:09

Yes you are meant to stay at home but apparently 80% of people identified as contacts don’t bother.

timeforanewstart · 17/11/2020 22:10

@wintertravel1980 more testing would be appropriate and could maybe pick up how much it does transmit in say schools
On one thread people are saying schools are hotbeds etc then you have a thread like this saying it was only someone in there year my child is unlikely to have it etc

RoseAndRose · 17/11/2020 22:12

No wonder the figures remain stubbornly high
Doingmybest4u · 17/11/2020 22:12

I kept my 4 year old in the house / garden the whole time aside from two walks around the block in the dark to stretch her legs a bit.

anxiouscrazymum · 17/11/2020 22:17

Yes we do, because we care about others and are not self centred! It's 14 days, get over it, suck it up and think about others!

timeforanewstart · 17/11/2020 22:18

@RoseAndRose I think tHis thread comfirms those figures so maybe the goverment need to look at it another way , especially for kids sent home multiple times
