Taking in parcels for neighbours

GoingBackTo505 · 13/11/2020 12:48

What's the etiquette with taking in parcels for neighbours during lockdown?
I'm torn between wanting to be neighbourly but also not wanting to take the risk of coming into contact with anything. We seem to have had loads of deliveries this week for our next door neighbours and it just got me thinking.
What's everyone else doing?

I just say no. It's a pain especially this time of year. My delivery drivers seem to know to leave ours tucked away where we can find it anyway thankfully.

MajesticWhine · 13/11/2020 12:58

I take in parcels for neighbours yes. It has not occurred to me not to.

worriedandannoyed · 13/11/2020 13:00

I take them in for my neighbours regularly. Open door, place parcel in hallway. Wash hands, wait for neighbour to pick it up. Is it really that risky?

PurpleDaisies · 13/11/2020 13:01

I take them. They take them for me.

I don’t get what the huge risk is supposed to be.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/11/2020 13:01

My neighbours are fine about it.
We haven't contaninated each other by standingin the school playground or by our DCs being in the same classroom 30 hours per week.

Just stand at the threshold claim parcel, job done. No rules broken.

I would be more cautious with my elderly neighbours, but we don't share an accessible frontage so deliveries don't end up there.

Jrobhatch29 · 13/11/2020 13:02

I've taken parcels for neighbours and they have for me. My amazon man always just leaves it in my recycling bin though. However with smyths toys etc being closed I'm grateful to my neighbours for taking in parcels which are Xmas presents for me when im not in. I'm happy to do the same for them. I just wash my hands

Purplecatshopaholic · 13/11/2020 13:09

I do it all the time. As do my neighbours. Just wash your hands after..

Stellaris22 · 13/11/2020 13:22

I take in parcels, but socially distance at the door and clean.

Delivery drivers and postal workers are so busy right now I would t want to add redeliveries to their work load.

Tenyearsgone · 13/11/2020 13:25

It never occurred to me not to.

movingonup20 · 13/11/2020 13:26

Of course, and they do it for me. There's this stuff called soap and water, it gets rid of nasties on your hands

Lilac95 · 13/11/2020 13:27

I always take them in....just not for the nasty neighbours on my left 😂 I leave them in the hall and if you’re really that concerned you could wipe them down or bag it in something until it’s collected? I just pop it out of the way and wash my hands

Stellaris22 · 13/11/2020 13:31

Ha! I'm the same for neighbours on my left.

Delivery driver left a note saying I'd accepted a parcel for them, they didn't come and collect the parcel for 3 days. Turns out they were flowers (I didn't open the parcel so had no idea) and got angry I didn't bring it round earlier. So I now refuse to accept parcels for that neighbour.

tortoiseshell1985 · 13/11/2020 13:33

Only one on our street wfh so taking in parcels for everyone atm they all seem very grateful
I dont mind

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/11/2020 16:33

I take the delivery as long as it’s small enough to stay in the hall for collection, not had many though as most couriers are leaving outside anyway or in sheds/garages. Knock and run for most Grin

tappitytaptap · 13/11/2020 17:12

It hadn’t occurred to me not to tbh, as others have said wash your hands and don’t stand too close? I can’t imagine it’s a major transmission risk, and I say this taking in and taking parcels from next door who are students who as far as I can see are not following the lockdown rules to the letter!

Cyclingwidow15 · 13/11/2020 18:36

I went to collect a parcel from the neighbours and when they opened the door they told me that they were all isolating as someone in the house had tested positive!

I’m thankful that they regularly take parcels for me but I think considering there was a positive case in the household they should have refused this time. The parcel is sat in my garage in quarantine for now and I thoroughly washed my hands after collecting it Grin

SomewhereEast · 13/11/2020 19:50

It really hadn't entered my head not to. Just wash your hands if you're anxious? We've always ended up taking in lots of parcels as DH was WFHing a lot even pre-Covid, but we get on well with all our neighbours and they do the same for us.

U8myufo · 13/11/2020 20:06

I always take them in for our neighbour it's no bother. Although she's started putting our address down when she orders things now so absolutely everything she orders gets delivered to us - which is a bit presumptuous but never mind. It could be worse. She's a nice neighbour all in all.

SufferingFromLongLockdown · 13/11/2020 20:18

Maybe back in march I might have thought twice about it. Now it wouldn't occur to me not to.

LooneyLovefood · 13/11/2020 20:28

It literally says on sky news when they have the rolling virus info that it cannot be caught for letter and parcels - so there is absolutely no reason not to take one in for a neighbour. The delivery man would be at your door for no more than 2 minutes tops and would be at a distance so no risk. A neighbour collecting it would be at your door for about 20 seconds so again no risk.

I WFH so I'm generally always in so I happily take parcels in for our neighbours at any time, including now. Everyone on my street is the same bar my miserable next door neighbours who made a right song and dance to my husband when he went round to collect two parcels that had been left at theirs for us. They made a right fuss about the huge risk to their lives caused them from taking in the parcels and their mental health was being affected every time they'd look at the boxes waiting to be collected. My husband then queried why they hadn't just said no to accepting the delivery - their response was "the driver said it had to be left with a neighbour, therefore we felt we had no choice." My husband made it very clear to them that if it happened again they should say no and save themselves the trauma. What a drama out of nothing!

Quaagars · 14/11/2020 00:27

I take in parcels for neighbours yes. It has not occurred to me not to.

This
Even in the first lockdown I took a parcel in
(Even though DH was like "OMG, what are you doing, did you not at least sanitize it first?")
or something
I'm like "no, it never even occurred to me" lol
Anyway, to cut a story short, yes I take parcels in if any comes to us and I hope my neighbours are nice if we ever do too.

Shock Really? See that's just taking the piss - cheeky cow lol! How do you know she's doing that?
Bobtheshark · 14/11/2020 02:00

I take in parcels and my neighbours take in parcels for me.

I was known in our street when I was maternity leave to take in parcels for people but yes I would draw the line at them using my address
BananaPop2020 · 14/11/2020 02:17

Why wouldn’t you? Some rationality needs to be applied here.
