Being forced to wear a mask in exams

whodoesntlovejelly · 13/11/2020 07:57

So I've received an email from Dd's (age 15) school stating that during mock examinations-due to start on Monday it will be mandatory for all students to wear masks for the whole of every exam. Is it just me that thinks this will be absolutely awful for them??

Not as awful as having their education impaired yet more, or getting sick (or a family member very ill) during the exams.

I'd hope they would have provision for medically exempt kids to be somewhere other than the main exam rooms with more space.

CutCopyPastedLikeYou · 13/11/2020 08:04

Not great but that's what they've got to put up with right now

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 13/11/2020 08:05

No, not awful. Plenty of people wear masks and work. A few hours for an exam is nothing.

Much better than getting ill after or taking it home to family members.

Shakirasma · 13/11/2020 08:05

Why do you think it will be so awful?

Redbrickwall · 13/11/2020 08:06

I agree, it’s awful for them.

ellenpartridge · 13/11/2020 08:07

I agree it's awful. Surely the exam desks are spaced out anyway.

BefuddledPerson · 13/11/2020 08:09

Not 'awful', no.

I would be happy if this was in place in my child's school as it would limit the risk of disruption to exam period, which matters to me a lot.

Bwlch · 13/11/2020 08:12

Why do you think it will be so awful?

I was thinking the same thing. It's not great, but not awful. University students seem to manage without complaint.

OpheliasCrayon · 13/11/2020 08:14

Yeah I would not be happy with that at all. I'd complain.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 13/11/2020 08:15

Nit awful imo.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 13/11/2020 08:16

Not

ShanghaiDiva · 13/11/2020 08:16

Surely students are further apart from each other during exams/ at separate desks so I don’t understand the need for masks.
However, I don’t think it’s awful.

movingonup20 · 13/11/2020 08:19

Not awful no. Slightly uncomfortable. We aren't used to wearing them so it's taking take to get used to but with very few exceptions they are not that uncomfortable, it's more being acclimatised. Surgeons operate for hours on end wearing them, always have done and it doesn't affect their concentration! These sorts of posts are more about people not liking being told what to do!

Northernsoullover · 13/11/2020 08:21

Awful? Oh the poor lambs. I have children the same age and as a family we acknowledged that wearing a mask is irritating. Awful? Covid would be awful. My mum catching it would be awful. Stop whingeing and get on with it.

Mintjulia · 13/11/2020 08:25

Make sure you provide comfortable Thin cotton masks that fit well, and it should be fine.

I've got to the point I don't notice mine.

starfish4 · 13/11/2020 08:27

Not great, but there are many people wearing masks for 8/9 hours every day due to work and travel.

Also, it'll keep them safer and hopefully they'll be well enough to do all their mocks, so at least there's a baseline for assessment if exams get cancelled again.

agradecida · 13/11/2020 08:32

If that is what you see as an 'absolutely awful' thing for your DD15 to have to be enduring, then it just goes to prove what an absolutely privileged time and place she is living in.

yikesanotherbooboo · 13/11/2020 08:34

It is not awful wearing a mask. You just get used to it. The worst thing that I find is talking with a mask on which they won't be doing. I really don't understand these mask threads , of course it would be nicer without but it really is no more than a minor nuisance.

puffinkoala · 13/11/2020 08:34

Not great though but you have to do it on a driving test, too which is about 40 mins (less if you mess up early!). How long is the longest exam?

islockdownoveryet · 13/11/2020 08:39

Why is it awful ? What is awful the ones who are testing positive and the bubble having to isolate and missing school that's awful.
So if wearing a mask helps reduce this then do it .

carolebaskinfedhimtothetigers · 13/11/2020 08:51

I've done several exams since July and has to wear a mask in every one, I can't say it affected me at all really.

OuiOuiKitty · 13/11/2020 08:55

My 13yr old wears a mask all day every day at school and it's fine. Don't make a big deal out of it and it won't be a big deal.

notevenat20 · 13/11/2020 08:57

If they will have to wear a mask for the real exam then it makes sense to wear one for the mock.

isitsnowingyet · 13/11/2020 09:03

snowflakes

Musicalmistress · 13/11/2020 09:04

@ShanghaiDiva

Surely students are further apart from each other during exams/ at separate desks so I don’t understand the need for masks. However, I don’t think it’s awful.
They are also probably in a contained space for a longer period of time? Possibly without the same possibilities for ventilation?
