Asthma and covid vaccine

Sb2012 · 11/11/2020 09:11

I have very mild asthma. Only ever sometimes need my blue inhaler if I have a chest cold. My asthma was more of a problem when I was younger and “disappeared” in my twenties.
Anyway I’m always sent a letter for the flu vaccine by my GP
I read somewhere yesterday that the under 50s with underlying issues such as asthma would also be offered the vaccine. Is this true? What about children who have asthma and normally get the flu vaccine?
Anyone know if children would be included in the under 50s prioritised because of asthma even if it is mild??

Afaik children arent being vaccinated (at all).
Low priority unfortunately

MoirasRoses · 11/11/2020 10:46

Children won’t be getting the vaccine at all. It’s not been tested on them yet so they can’t. That’s just the Pfizer vaccine, don’t know about the others in testing.

I have exactly the same kinda asthma as you, was worse when I was young & basically went away. I occasionally use my blue inhaler if I get chesty with a cold. I also get a flu each year from the GP although there was one year recently I was told I didn’t qualify as my steroid dose was too low. I wonder if it’ll be similar, you have to hit certain steroid dose criteria to qualify?

MoirasRoses · 11/11/2020 10:46

It’s not to do with children’s priority. They've not tested this vaccine on them!

Keepdistance · 11/11/2020 11:11

They would be lowest priority anyway as it's mainly being done by age. Though ecv children could be higher

Sb2012 · 11/11/2020 12:00

I forgot the vaccine hasn’t been tested on children!

Ok what about young adults that qualify for the flu vaccine and have mild asthma only??

My son has mild well controlled asthma and is 24, he is not expecting to be offered the vaccine for a long time. He hasn’t had his flu jab yet as it has been cancelled by the doctors as they are waiting for more supplies.

If you are down as having asthma you will be offered it with other patients with asthma. They don’t have a sliding scale of severity.

They don’t have a sliding scale of severity

There are two possible priorities:

a) you shielded and are priority 6 on the current plan (which I think is rather low, I'd have merged it with priority 4, before any otherwise healthy working age people)

b) you were not - priority 7

No one knows yet but I assume if you are asthmatic enough to be offered the flu vaccine annually you'll be offered the COVID vaccine when that band of people come up.
