When will they cut the self isolation period?

Does anyone have any thoughts on this!
I've heard that they are cutting it to 7 days when returning from certain places abroad, could this happen in everyday life too?
I think I'm more worried about being told to isolate then actually getting the virus and I hope that doesn't sound ignorant as I don't mean ot to. I'm a single mum with 2 children and I get really bad cabin fever. How sustainable is it for people to continually having to isolation for 14 days?

Not sustainable at all. Many people can’t or won’t do 14 days isolation, it is far too long and actually most people become symptomatic within the 7 days anyway. Many children at my DS school are already on their third lot of isolation thereby missing the equivalent of half a term of schooling. There was talk of them reducing the isolation period but not heard much on the matter recently.

balzamico · 09/11/2020 21:25

I've wondered this too. Compliance would be far higher if the period was shorter

november90 · 09/11/2020 21:31

I've just been chatting to my sister and one of the teachers for her daughters school is self isolating so it doesn't effect them as she isn't positive but been in contact with someone I assume. Anyway my sister is now panicking thinking she may have to isolate and she won't even be able to walk the dog or go tk the shops or anything! 2 weeks is just such a long period of time! How much longer can we be expected to do that for? It just doesn't feel like it's progressing.. still 14 days after all this time! I could stomach 7.... but 14 😰

.... sorry I'm just freaking out

It wouldnt affect compliance!

Swishswish26 · 09/11/2020 21:36

France has reduced theirs to 7 days to increase compliance.

Confuzzlediddled · 09/11/2020 21:39

People who are shielding are stuck in for months at a time and aren't allowed within 2m of their own family, 2 weeks is nothing compared to that!

SexTrainGlue · 09/11/2020 21:41

I think 7 is too short, because whatever it's set at, people will lop a bit off the end.

Most people who become symptomatic do so around 5-7 days. Unless the virus mutates, I think less than 10 days is iffy. France has very high cases at the moment 968.2 per 100,000 (compared to UK's 477.5) so I'm not sure whether we would want to emulate.

november90 · 09/11/2020 21:56

I obviously can't speak for everyone... but I know that I personally wouldn't finish isolation early, I didn't realise this was a thing.
I just don't understand how there's no contingency plan for this.... they can't keep asking people to isolate 😭

Not sure why it’s even being considered given incubation is upto 14 days. If people won’t comply for just two weeks, they are are hardly going to comply regardless of the time period.

middleager · 09/11/2020 22:37

My 14 year old son is on his third 14 day isolation since Sept due to positive cases at school.
The school is rife with cases too.
This is now our life.
It means I daren't risk seeing my mother in her 70s (she lives alone) just in case.

MadameBlobby · 09/11/2020 23:13

I think they will cut it to 7 days to increase compliance. Apparently only a small percentage of people actually isolate so is the hope not if it’s for a shorter time more people will. I think I also read that the incubation is more like 2 - 5 days than 14.

Vonvon222 · 09/11/2020 23:16

I’ve just finished 14 days isolation, I felt my MH deteriorated quite quickly. Not even getting out with the dog for a quick walk was so hard. I’m more scared of having to do that again than catching COVID. I know people say oh it’s only 14 days but I found it so difficult as did my 13 and 21 year old. I was scared to take the rubbish out incase the curtain twitcher neighbours hurled abuse.

It’s not “just” 14 days is it? It can be several episodes of 14 days. I don’t blame people at all for thinking that this is just too much for the government to keep expecting of people to stop the virus spreading especially when the government themselves appear to be doing fuck all to improve things for people affected.
Torvean32 · 09/11/2020 23:18

They can't cut it to 7 days just for compliance reasons. There was discussion in cutting it in relation to a change in testing.
It's proven that ppl dont quarantine or self isolate. Those ppl would still not conform.

Some people will never conform, but others might if it’s less onerous.

They can’t keep asking school kids to isolate for repeated 2 week blocks and miss out on all that education in school for a virus that barely affects them even if they get it, this government are pathetic.

LastTrainEast · 09/11/2020 23:31

The hard part is getting the virus to agree to a shorter period. If anyone opposed to isolating can write up a method and pop it in one of the medical journals that would be a big help.

LastTrainEast · 09/11/2020 23:36

MadameBlobby not just this government. All the governments on the planet'. All their experts coming to the same conclusions.

But I get how people who thought the virus was only here in the UK might have got the idea it was our government's fault.

Confuzzlediddled · 10/11/2020 00:01

@LastTrainEast totally agree! I wish I only had to stay home for 14 days, at least I would be allowed to hug my children and husband!

It’s not really 14 days incubation though is it? That’s uber cautious. That’s why France cut it to 7, because most infections occur between 2 and 5 days after infection.

At the end of the day 75% of people co operating with 7 days isolation when that covers when most infections occur is surely better than 20% co operating with 14 days isolation.

MadameBlobby · 10/11/2020 08:53

The more people find the isolation period too onerous, the more the threat of fines, people just won’t bother getting the contact tracing app or answer the phone if they ring. If you can’t be contacted to be told to isolate you can’t be breaking any rules.

The government have really shot themselves in the foot with this punitive rather than supportive approach.
