Matt Hancock acting "fast"

DianaT1969 · 08/11/2020 06:47

Government have done a U turn on vitamin D and will send boxes direct to care homes and ECV.
Hancock claiming he's acting fast in the face of recent mounting evidence that vitamin D offers protection against Coronavirus. Fast??
I'm so angry. The incredible results of vitamin D as treatment in Cordoba were published in early September.
@MN - sorry can I get this moved to Coronavirus topic please? MN app on android won't allow any other topic than chat.

Says it all. The only 'fast' anyone in the government seems to know is how quickly the Prime Minister moves on a new mistress.

Six weeks after the SAGE recommendations were the England wide restrictions introduced, for example.

DianaT1969 · 08/11/2020 08:43

"PM moved on a new mistress".
😂

Do CEV have to do anything to get this, or will it just turn up through the post?

pinpinbin · 08/11/2020 09:13

Fast?! my family and I have been taking extra bit D since March!!

FusionChefGeoff · 08/11/2020 09:14

My GP friend told me in April to tell everyone to stock up on Vit D....

Hayeahnobut · 08/11/2020 09:14

Given this government's usual pace, I'd buy your own if possible rather than wait for them to send you some.

AntiHop · 08/11/2020 09:16

Glad they've finally caught on. I've been taking a vitamin d supplement long term, but I upped the dose when I heard more about how protective it can be for covid 19 (Dr john Campbell on youtube).

nether · 08/11/2020 09:18

Thank you for the repeating the advice to take VitD,

Can I repeat my actual question - does anyone actually know if the CEV will need to do anything to secure their supply under this scheme?

(perhaps that info will slip out at 10pm on a Sunday, like everything else to do with shielding!)

DianaT1969 · 08/11/2020 09:32

@nether - sorry, I don't know. It was reported in The Telegraph but I didn't see any detail on that - or what dosage they are recommending.

OP posts:
DianaT1969 · 08/11/2020 09:33

Also reported in The Mail (Telegraph is behind a pay wall).

Given it’s been talked about for months and can be very easily bought from shops and online and isn’t expensive no one had to wait before deciding to take it if they wanted “fast” action. Not everything has to be handed to people, they can be responsible for themselves.

Can I ask what dose you are taking? I take one tablet a day I believe it's 1000 IU.
midnightstar66 · 08/11/2020 09:47

I think people in care homes, which is what's being discussed here - them only now going to receive it - are there because they can't be fully responsible for themselves and are at a higher risk in that setting.

BahHumbygge · 08/11/2020 09:50

Icecream... the problem is with that line of thought, that people should be responsible for buying their own vit D, is that if the government suddenly put out a recommendation that everyone should start taking it immediately is that there simply isn't enough supply in the usual retail outlets to keep up with the sharp demand that would be caused. It would be like the Great Toilet Roll Shortage of March 2020.

The government at least needs to facilitate manufacture and distribution of enough vitamin D to go round most of the population, even if sold at usual market prices, as the private market can't cope with such an immediate demand-side spike.

NullcovoidNovember · 08/11/2020 09:50

Acting fast 😂😂😂.

TheSeedsOfADream · 08/11/2020 09:51

Thank god for the Coronavirus data threads. I started taking extra VitD (already take it for ancient bones) in April I think.
Only taken 7 months for the actual professionals to catch up.

notangelinajolie · 08/11/2020 09:51

How is this new? The NHS website he as been recommending that everyone take vitamin D supplements for months. I'm pretty sure its been there since at least close to the early days of Covid and may have been there before then. That is why I have been taking it.

nether · 08/11/2020 09:55

@BlueBlancmange

We have the DLux 3000 spray at the moment - have been supplementing (most of the year and definitely autumn-spring) since specialist registrar recommended it a couple of years ago

I think people in care homes, which is what's being discussed here

Article says care home residents and CEV - so it's the two most vulnerable categories, to try to keep them out of hospital or reduce the amount of time they need to be in.

Hospitals in the NW are already reporting higher levels of admissions than at peak 1, and this is before the spread in young people has really reached the older groups. Keeping the most vulnerable out of hospital is in everyone's interests, assuming that you also want NHS to have non-covid capacity

ssd · 08/11/2020 09:55

Thank god we've got matt hancock eh Confused

Jrobhatch29 · 08/11/2020 09:55

We've been taking it for months thanks to the covid board on MN! If we all knew, how did he not? What a tool

Fizbosshoes · 08/11/2020 09:57

Weve been taking it for months!

DianaT1969 · 08/11/2020 10:02

@IceCream - I partly agree with you. It's cheap and most of us can buy it. But there are people who are misinformed and think they get enough from the sun or food all year round. People in care homes or already in hospital. People not willing to take anything unless it's prescribed by their GP in case it adversely affects their medication.
In April the NHS put out info (misinformation) that Vitamin D didn't help prevent catching vitamin D. Matt Hancock recently said the same in the Commons.
The NHS recommended daily dose for winter is woefully low. Just enough to prevent rickets.
The Mail reports today that 80% of people being admitted to UK hospitals with Covid are deficient. (I don't know where they got that figure from and it's the Mail, so we'll take it with a pinch of salt).
But this deficiency and misinformation by the NHS and Matt Hancock is costing lives and taking up NHS resources if that 80% figure is true (or close to the truth).

OP posts:
DianaT1969 · 08/11/2020 10:07

@notangelinajolie - please look at the dose recommended for winter on the NHS website. It's 10 times lower than recommended for optimum immune function by experts.
Please look and come back and tell us that it's adequate.
No mention of how dosage to get out of deficiency. No mention of taking it with K2 and magnesium. No mention that people who are overweight/obese need to increase their dose.
It isn't good enough. Not before a pandemic and not 9 months into one.

OP posts:
zaffa · 08/11/2020 10:11

I've had a look for vit D supplements on Amazon and they all seem to be vit D3 - so you need to take D2 and D3?

DianaT1969 · 08/11/2020 10:16

@Zaffa - vitamin 3 preferably with K2 combined. I get mine in spray form from Holland & Barrett. They had a penny sale on last week which made them more affordable.
Some people with particular allergies but it suspended in olive oil.
