Did you lose your job due to the COVID situation?

Or are you at risk of losing your job anytime soon?

How are you preparing for it?

And if you were made redundant before did you manage to find another job yet?

Out of our close circle of about ten friends (plus partners) we also had another couple who both lost their jobs.

One was a Communications Manager in the public sector on contract, her husband does specialist photoshopping type work.

They now both work at Morrison's.

The people I know of who have lost their jobs are a pilot (lost job just before lockdown) who is now trying to change career. A travel agent who has now found a job in a call centre and a couple of recruitment consultants who are really struggling to find new roles.

Dugee · 07/11/2020 20:23

I also know of some recruitment consultants who have lost jobs, ones that I've used in the past when I have been job hunting. They are consultants who have been around for years and seem well connected, so if they are struggling to find roles, god help those who are not as well connected.

In my world, the other section who seem to have been hit are friend's adult children working in hospitality. It's not the end of the world for them financially because they still live at home but they are missing out on gaining work place skills.

I somehow survived redundancy in July/August, but I don't for a minute think it's the only round that will happen in my organisation as a result of covid. Whether I'll survive the next one, I don't know. I don't even know if I want to, after going through the process 4 times with this organisation now.

I'm looking to resurrect an old vocation that I'm qualified for as my backup plan, but it will be hard going while my daughter is still so young as the hours are incredibly long and jobs are hard to come by so may mean a house move. As a lone parent I'd rather be at home a bit more for her, as I am now.

I lost my temporary job in March due to Covid. Was on furlough until June. Pleased to say I currently have a temp job taking me through until the end of the year. No idea about 2021 🤷‍♀️

Travelban · 07/11/2020 21:33

Dh was put on furlough in July for four weeks and at risk would have been next if it wasn't that he found himself a new role within the company, albeit very temporary. Currently due to end in December but he is hoping (begging) for an extension until March so that he can buy some time in case of redundancy.

My job is OK for now but company is planning lots of redundancy. I am not in scope for now but that's only for now. None of our jobs are safe. We are worried but just try and block it out as much as we can.

TazMac · 07/11/2020 21:33

Yes, I know of contractors who were let go in March / April. All were unemployed for a while but seemed to find new roles again around August / September.

YippeeKayakOtherBuckets · 07/11/2020 21:36

I lost my retail job a week after coming back from furlough, they replaced me with someone younger and cheaper (min wage).

I got a pub job after a few weeks, it’s brilliant and I’ve had one promotion already and expecting another in December, but now who knows. 🤷‍♀️

Fancymarmite · 07/11/2020 21:56

No. No chance of losing job and very grateful for that (frontline NHS).

Husband unlikely to lose job, but not impossible (car mechanic). Some of the sales team, management and office staff have lost jobs.

I’ve been working a lot of overtime (doing over 50 hours a week) to put money aside in case husband needs to isolate or is out of work/furloughed. It would be very difficult to pay bills off just one wage.

Babyroobs · 07/11/2020 22:07

Sorry to all of you who have lost jobs. Mine is safe for now but it is a fixed term contract and the charity that funds it is losing huge amounts of fund raising revenue so I am not sure it will be renewed.

WishingHopingThinkingPraying · 07/11/2020 22:13

I did in June. But have been very lucky and have quickly found something even better. I work in tech and gave been approached 4 times in the last month with offers of interviews but I'm very happy I'm my new job.

I found it very distressing to lose my job so my heart goes out to everyone suffering with the stress of this.

OfUselessBooks · 07/11/2020 22:24

I was furloughed from March and made redundant in June. I got a good package though and it will see us through a while. I've found another job, 15 hours per week. It's quite a bit less than my old role but we're going to move house and massively reduce our outgoings. Things are starting to look up, it's been a horrible year.

StubbleTurnips · 08/11/2020 08:44

I haven’t, part of the emergency services. DH looks like restructure coming, they’ve had one round of redundancies already.

We moved house the week before lockdown. We will be fucked if DH can’t find work, he’s already said he’ll do anything if it comes to it.

Cherryup · 08/11/2020 09:29

Yes DH got made redundant in June, still unemployed despite applying for anything and everything, not sure if his age is going against him.

My sister works in hospitality and hasn't worked since Aug.

My niece worked in hospitality and lost her job in March but found a role in another sector quickly.

Lots of friends are at risk and had to take pay cuts.

It's a tough time.

SaltyAF · 08/11/2020 09:31

My job exposes me to Covid. If I end up with long Covid I expect to be jobless within a year. It's a matter of chance.

Frazzled2207 · 08/11/2020 09:33

I am self employed running a kids activity business. Hanging on by a thread, but only just.
Rely on husband’s income but he was at risk late spring due to covid. Luckily his company got through it with some voluntary redundancies. My income has gone through the floor but overall we feel very lucky.

Sewsosew · 08/11/2020 09:42

Yes and no I’ve not gotten anything else. I had some flexible hours around school. Everyone wants people 37 hours, which I don’t understand at all!

EmmaWithTheGreatHair · 08/11/2020 09:52

I was furloughed in March.

The company I work for has done extremely well due to people not going abroad for their holidays, however, our boss has taken complete advantage of the furlough scheme and has only kept minimal staff in, this has had a knock on effect and I was only just catching up in my area, from the first lockdown. No top ups, 80% (which is absolutely amazing and I do understand how lucky I am).

Now furloughed again and when I heard the news about the extension to March i thought, I won’t be back this side of Christmas. We were mostly due to be using holidays for annual Christmas leave, why pay holiday when you can furlough staff, will be our boss’ train of thought.

I know the furlough scheme is there to help businesses but there are some taking huge advantage of it.

ittooshallpass · 08/11/2020 10:06

I lost mine in June. It's been horrendous. No furlough, no benefits just been living off savings and the NMW supermarket job I managed to get. It has taken over 200 job applications to find a contract that pays 20% less than I was originally earning. I'm on my knees with stress about losing my home and trying to keep a brave face for DD. I'm a single parent so it's my worst nightmare to lose my job. I have zero patience with People whinging about wearing masks and not being able to have parties.
