The costs of lockdown

madmarchmare · 07/11/2020 11:13

I have been lucky during lockdown to have kept my job and not to have got ill....so far.

But the other costs to my family members have been huge

3 members of my family are self employed
My mums bridal business has gone to the wall
My dad, in his 60s, has developed claustrophobia
A close family friend has had a late cancer diagnosis with v poor prognosis
My 7 yo Ds has had ALL of this ophthalmologist appointments cancelled and is falling farther and further behind with his reading because his eyesight is so poor

Yesterday in the news I read of a huge rise of babies killed or harmed in lockdown

And yet to express any of this is akin to being some sort of right wing conspiracy theorist who is lacking in compassion. To suggest that social contact is important is seen as shallow and selfish.

Does anyone else feel like this?

OP posts:
Hyperbolistic · 07/11/2020 11:15

Yes

FractionalGains · 07/11/2020 11:31

I think a lot of people do

Just reading this today, makes you think..

HeyBaby2020 · 07/11/2020 13:37

Fuck lockdown - worse things in life than covid

People need to get a grip and say no

Flyonawalk · 07/11/2020 13:59

Another vote for the OP. The social and financial costs of lockdown are tremendous. The youngest and most disadvantaged children will suffer for a long time. If you haven’t already found it, google LockdownSceptics for a website which collects many articles disproving need for lockdown and suggesting alternatives.

Torvean32 · 07/11/2020 14:08

I dont blame the staff but I've found Gp care really poor since the original lockdown. I'd normally be seen once a month by a Gp , I've not been phoned once let alone called.

I've huge concerns about all the medical diagnoses that will be missed. We will never know the suicide rate due to lockdowns/lost jobs.
I'm worried about ppl trapped in abusive relationships.

I think we are allowed to have concerns other than just Covid.

Torvean32 · 07/11/2020 14:09

Should say, I've not been seen once let alone called.

Topseyt · 07/11/2020 15:24

Yes. I totally agree with you.

katkit · 07/11/2020 15:27

I agree with you, OP.

IrkedEssex · 07/11/2020 15:34

I agree, OP

bathsh3ba · 07/11/2020 18:14

Absolutely. Quality of life seems to mean nothing - only 'saving lives from COVID' and 'protecting the NHS'.

KitKatastrophe · 07/11/2020 18:30

Yes I agree. I think mumsnet is particularly bad for this, as I havent noticed it so much in "real life".

Madhairday · 07/11/2020 18:46

It's not just about saving lives from Covid. It's about trying to contain covid so that it doesn't have a massive effect on other areas, ie hospitals. Many hospitals in the north are having to cancel procedures because they are overrun with covid. I am no fan of the government but don't see another way. All of you saying you agree, what do you suggest then? If covid isn't contained can you not see that all those things you mention will happen even more?

This attitude baffles me.

SocialBees · 07/11/2020 18:47

I agree OP

StylishMummy · 07/11/2020 19:04

Absolutely agree and I'm about as high risk from covid as it's possible to be (minus age) we can't pay this price forever

wildbarnet · 07/11/2020 19:30

Baffles me that people are ok with this I know of 2 suicides in young people /depression due to no business and jobs, there will be poverty /more abuse /more cancer not being diagnosed the list goes on

If the nhs was not cut in the first place we would have coped better

Madhairday · 07/11/2020 19:43

I'm not ok with it either wildbarnet, nor am I ok with all the cuts to the NHS over years of austerity. Really not ok. But the virus doesn't care about what we are or not ok with, and the fact is that by containing it we are preventing more of those types of things than if it was left to run wild. I really don't understand why people can't see this. What's your solution? What would you do?

Rainey910 · 07/11/2020 19:58

I completely agree OP. I had a baby in July and health visitors just aren’t visiting and my baby hasn’t been weighed since she was 2 weeks old. Luckily she’s a massive chunk and doing really well and loved and adored. But what about all those poor babies who are not, they are all going under the radar and I’m so angry about it.

Not to mention all us mother’s who had to spend so much of the births of our children on our own - which in some cases can be devastating.

I’m angry about how children’s educations have been effected, and I’m so angry about how the elderly have been treated in care homes. You see stories of 90 year olds with dementia so distressed because they haven’t seen any family in months.

In the whole of my babies life, it’s been ILLEGAL for her grandparents to see her - sorry but what the hell is going on?!

Yes we need to contain COVID but surely that has to be done by properly protecting the vulnerable whilst the rest of us get on with it, so that the economy functions and we can look after those that are vulnerable and pay for the NHS. For some reason this keeps getting shouted down...

I really do despair and wish I had the answers.

Jesscarbqueen87 · 07/11/2020 20:05

I agree OP

Delatron · 07/11/2020 20:09

I agree and despair.
Illegal for grandparents to see their grandchildren, illegal to sit in your mum’s house and have a cup of tea.
Can’t hug your family .

Imagine if someone had told you this a year ago?

We need to get some perspective. It’s like COVID-19 is all that matters.

Ankylosaur · 07/11/2020 20:14

I totally and utterly agree with you, OP.

guitarstringseadgbe · 07/11/2020 20:14

Totally and utterly agree.

loulouljh · 07/11/2020 20:16

Totally agree..all sense of proportion has been lost..
