Those who work in pubs Those who work in hotels Those who work in restaurants Those who work in cinemas Those who work in gyms Those who work in clothing shops Those who work in book shops Those who work in outdoor shops Those who work in bowling alleys

etc etc etc . It isn't rocket science. If the industry is closed or partially closed the people are furloughed.

My OH has been furloughed. He's a mechanic and works in a garage attached to a car show room. The showroom was forced to close but the garage can remain open under the rules. They have furloughed half the garage staff and left half working as it won't be very busy in the garage with the showroom shut.

Yes sure.

But wondering what people’s work places are like. Many still furloughed? Or have people had it end for some anyway.

I don’t know anyone atm. General picture of how used it is.

Me and my colleagues were furloughed and back part time. We work in the travel industry and are not only not taking and money, we're also refunding hundreds of millions. DP is now also furloughed for a month as he's a shop manager. Luckily we both work for companies who have the reserves to get through this but its still extremely stressful.

We were furloughed during the first lockdown (furniture manufacturing) but not this time as orders have exploded. Who knows what will happen after new year though.

I’ve just gone back this week. Our company deals with corporate events and exhibitions which have all stopped completely. We also do some digital work which is what we care concentrating on but there are a lot of people including lots of freelancers in the industry that have no work - event baristas, booth builders, camera men, lighting and sound crew, production crew, printers, etc

swapsicles · 05/11/2020 14:27

Hospitality, almost all furloughed in our hotel, apart from a very small number on security/maintenance.
Still had people on furlough from the last time that hadn't yet returned as we just weren't busy enough to have full staff.

BrieAndChilli · 05/11/2020 14:31

It’s not always the obvious - pubs/hotels/theatres etc that are affected it’s all the other people that depend on those industries for work - taxis who normally take the drunk people home or the ubers ferrying business people across the city for meetings, limo drivers - ditto, the office sandwich suppliers, caterers, cleaners as offices don’t need as much cleaning if locked down, tailors who make suits for business men, show shiners, the newspaper stand outside the office quarter where no-one goes now, car insurance claims went down as people weren’t driving as much and having less crashes, etc etc

My friend works in a gym and hasn't been furloughed this time and wasn't furloughed last time.
Local authority so gets sent to do other work within the council.

Friends daughter works for seasonal theme type park. Was furloughed at start still receiving furloughed pay and will increase back up to 80% now and continue through to end of March.

However, she had done really well since in addition to furlough pay she obtained job at supermarket and si had 2 incomes throughout. This is allowed.

She is saving money for a house purchase. It is not always negative

I work in a pub. I'm not furloughed - we're doing takeaways

MynephewR · 05/11/2020 14:48

I am a waitress in a big chain restaurant and I've technically been on furlough since March. Was furloughed from April-July while the restaurant was shut and then on flexi furlough until now, I'm off work now until we are allowed to open again so back on full furlough. All my colleagues that work front of house are also off work but a few of the chefs (including my DH) and managers are still on flexi furlough because we are open for takeaways, they will be doing about 70% of their usual hours.

I wouldn't bank on that being viable though

Loads of pubs here started that last time but had to stop. Flexible furlough helps though as you can claim for hours not worked and that wasn't in place at the start of the last lockdown.

I work in soft play after getting everything covid secure on flexible furlough we managed to open for 2 whole days now all back to being furloughed
