Down Syndrome and Covid

Just putting this out there for any parents or Carers who haven’t heard the latest news re covid and Down Syndrome. Adults from today are to be classed as high risk and are CEV. Under 18’s classed as low risk, I don’t know how reliable this is as there hasn’t been any studies regarding children with Down Syndrome and Covid so far.
Loads of info on the Downs Syndrome Association website.

Thanks for this - my sister has Down’s syndrome

Saladfingersscaresme · 04/11/2020 22:38

@Ethelfleda You’re welcome. I can’t believe it hasn’t been reported anywhere, it’s important info that needs to be out there.

Bumping for others to see

Thanks @Saladfingersscaresme
My dd is only 7 but GP seems to think she should still be shielding (she was previously on the list but my understanding was that most children have now been taken off). Everything I've read so far indicates that it's only adults with ds that have been assessed as CEV... not sure what to do for the best!!

Saladfingersscaresme · 07/11/2020 22:21

@Ethelfleda thanks 😊

@pinkpip100 it’s a difficult one as it seems to be their immune response that causes problems if they catch the virus. My son is nearly 15 and is very much a young man physically, he didn’t go back to school after half term. After the Down Syndrome Association put new advice on their website all over 16’s with Down Syndrome at my sons school have been given the option to stay home.
To be honest it has shaken me up a little as my sons consultant gave him the all clear to return to school in September. I don’t want to take the risk. He is happy whether he’s at school or home and will enjoy some zoom lessons next week.
What concerns me is that there hasn’t been any studies so far of the effect of the virus on children with Down Syndrome.

It's a worry. My brother has learning difficulties and shares a supported living flat with a man who has Down Syndrome. My brother has tested positive for Covid so is having to isolate in a separate flat. Luckily his flatmate doesn't seem to have been affected.

My daughter has DS, she is 2 and was previously on the shielding list. She has sleep apnea and uses a CPAP at night and had a heart issue which has been repaired. Her respiratory physio and her paediatrician have both said she is more at risk from flu than covid so to be careful but she is ok to go to nursery and we don’t need to shield in the future. Still worried but I trust them!

Saladfingersscaresme · 07/11/2020 22:42

@PoloNeckKnickers I’m sorry to hear about your brother, it’s worrying enough at the best of times if you love someone with learning difficulties let alone now. I hope your brother makes a quick recovery and the lad he shares with isn’t affected.
They are so, so vulnerable (not just clinically) and you feel helpless sometimes.

@DSsnmum awwww, my son was adorable at the age of 2! Bless her. My son had sleep apnea as well as recurrent bouts of tonsillitis, severe enough to land him in hospital, they removed his tonsils and adenoids which cured the sleep apnea. The new info came out last week so it might be worth checking again?

We have a respiratory appointment in a few weeks so was going to ask again. She goes to nursery 2 mornings a week in a very small bubble, one of whom is her twin brother and we live in Greater Manchester and have been under restrictions forever so we’ve been really careful!
