Why are the gyms closed?

epythymy · 04/11/2020 17:48

When so little spread has been attributed back to them? I read it was 1% but if anyone has other statistics let me know.
When obesity is such a significant factor in morbidity?
When other non-essential businesses are staying open (such as garden centres)?

It just absolutely baffles me. My gym is a small, privately owned studio that is unlikely to make it through a second lockdown.

Many of us have trained hard and made good progress over the last several months. This is possible to do at home but much more difficult without the space or machines for weight training. Plus with the cold and the rain, motivation to go out won't be particularly high whereas a run on a treadmill isn't quite as difficult to talk yourself into.

And why is spread in gyms so low when they are generally closed spaces filled with sweaty, panting people?

Exception for one thing like that, means argument for exception of other things like that. I'm not happy about gyms or pools or tennis either, but there you go. I get the 'logic' so far as there is any logic with the decisions being made.

onedayinthefuture · 04/11/2020 17:56

If gyms can't be open, I don't think takeaways should be open either. It doesn't make any sense.

480Widdio · 04/11/2020 18:00

Beyond furious that I cannot go swimming yet again,It is the only exercise I do to keep mobile,it is crucial for me.The mood last night at the gym was angry.

I go to a David Lloyd,it is being cleaned continuously, not heard of one case of Covid there.

There is a Petition with over half a million signatures.

ohthegoats · 04/11/2020 18:02

They've already dealt with it in parliament - on Monday in whatever the PMQ section was.

If gyms can't be open, I don't think takeaways should be open either.

That's not a sentence I thought I'd ever read.

PhilCornwall1 · 04/11/2020 18:09

They are closed, because a bloke who has probably never darkened the door of one has said it must be.

IrkedEssex · 04/11/2020 18:54

It's bonkers. You can walk round a golf course with a mate but can't play golf with said mate. You can go fishing but not go angling. You can't play outdoor tennis. Gyms have a vanishingly small case rate possibly attributed to them and are some of the safest places you could wish to be. I am furious about it.

larrythelizard · 04/11/2020 19:02

I agree. It's madness, particularly with the proven link between covid and obesity.

I go to a gym in a unit on an industrial estate, the big roller door is usually open, it's cleaned between classes and no sharing of kit.

Going to the supermarket is riskier!

Presumably not a big enough earner for the government to care.

time4anothername · 04/11/2020 20:32

because tracing in many countries have identified some superspreading events from gyms vis.sciencemag.org/covid-clusters/

kowari · 04/11/2020 20:35

Isn't it 90% diet, 10% exercise?

Feellikefrighteningyeah · 04/11/2020 20:58

No cases traced to climbing centres. Cleaned constantly. Sanitising hands constantly etc. Masks worn on belay. But had to close

Calmandmeasured1 · 04/11/2020 21:02

If gyms can't be open, I don't think takeaways should be open either.
In what world is there any comparison between the two?

It doesn't make any sense.
I agree, your comment doesn't remotely make sense.

missyB1 · 04/11/2020 21:03

No logic or science behind a lot of decisions being made, in getting increasingly pissed off Angry

GrimSisters · 04/11/2020 21:03

My sparesly populated gym is a massive warehouse, with huge double roller doors that span the entirety of one side of the building. So much air flow you're practically outside.
The small gym attached to my kids' swimming centre has no natural light or ventilation.
I suppose it is impossible to decide on a case by case basis, but is rather galling that I can no longer go.

Livinginanightmare · 04/11/2020 21:04

My sister in law got it from her gym, very expensive, exclusive privately owned gym. As I have learnt (since Monday) they were allowing a circuits style class sharing equipment without wiping it down in a very small unventilated room. That was last week- she’s gone on to infect 6 people and counting(I’m currently isolating for 14 days). Not to mention the health club did not inform the members and relied on track and trace, still haven’t had my call from them.

Another ‘Muscle gym’ I know of, isn’t encouraging social distancing whatsoever. Men stood over others spotting and the like.

Lots of gyms not sticking to guidance.

Isitrainingihadntnoticed · 04/11/2020 21:07

My mental health is bring deeply affected by this.

And no, going for a run isn't so easy in winter.

MiddlesexGirl · 04/11/2020 21:09

The spread is very low in very many settings that are now to be closed. There's no point making exceptions for just one thing because there are so many just one things that people want exceptions for.

Theredjellybean · 04/11/2020 21:11

Agree... Why can my elderly mother and a load of her cronies all arrange to meet for a mooch around the gift tat in the garden centre but I cannot go to my gym.. That has restricted numbers, no classes, max four people in at anyone time, no using changing room and masks on all staff

profpoopsnagle · 04/11/2020 21:11

Boris has a PT, hired after he caught coronavirus to help him get his BMI down. Personal trainers are still allowed under the new rules.

Or you can by some fancy gym equipment, or perhaps a pool and store and maintain it in your spacious house and garden.

But no, normal people are not allowed to do something which has huge physical and mental benefits and yet very few cases attributed to spread in comparison to hospitals, care homes, workplaces and schools.

Know your place!

MiddlesexGirl · 04/11/2020 21:15

She can't. Not under the rules.

profpoopsnagle · 04/11/2020 21:16

A colleague suggested that I go open water swimming should pools close. Now, lots of people do it and I enjoy it in the summer months, but, November is not the time to start (you need to acclimatise and this is pretty serious, you can easily end up with hypothermia).

Walking is a great exercise for many, but doesn't get the heart rate going enough for most people for it to be that effective and has pressures on joints and knees.

Running isn't suitable for everyone. Ditto cycling. But yes, we can all stay in for a month and have a takeaway every night.

Theredjellybean · 04/11/2020 21:17

I thought garden centres were allowed to stay open.
My mother has arranged to conviently be there the same time as three friends are going to just happen to be there...

Where are the rules about personal trainers that you have seen? Do they have to work outdoors?

Well she'll be breaking the rules then!

I’m gutted at gyms closing and really worried that I’ll lose all the gains I’ve made. Mine has been cleaner than it’s ever been.

Also church. My church is the most Covid secure place I’ve been.

Emmie12345 · 04/11/2020 21:23

It’s so annoying

Anything to do with shopping ok

anything healthy or culturally uplifting - nope
