Non Essentials cordoned off

I've just seen this on Twitter www.thegrocer.co.uk/service-and-availability/english-supermarkets-told-to-cordon-off-areas-of-non-essential-goods/650001.article

I had no idea this was going to happen. Does anyone know if they'll make an exeption in emergencies as they did in Wales? They were only closed for a fortnight, we're going to be in lockdown for a month, and so close to Christmas!!

None of my local supermarkets did this last time. I got all I needed in terms of clothes, shoes and household stuff from our massive Asda. Surprised that it was such good quality.

It would be stupid to do it now when they could stock loads of Christmas stuff.

They should be concentrating on enforcing mask wearing and one person per family. That would reduce the risk of transmission more!

SueEllenMishke · 04/11/2020 18:16

This is how it was during the last lockdown in England.
No it wasn't.

The government have denied reports that this will happen.

Nope. Not in my part of England.
Sarahandco · 04/11/2020 18:20

Argos inside sainsburys was perfect last time

Fatted · 04/11/2020 18:25

My local boots did that too. I bought the tampons I went in for. And browsed the make up while the staff looked at me like I was dog poop on the bottom of their shoe.

Fatted · 04/11/2020 18:26

Does no one remember the easter egg police?!

Teaplease29 · 04/11/2020 18:53

Anyone know what will happen with baby clothes? Will they section off in supermarket!?

IcedPurple · 04/11/2020 19:02

I suspect a Venn diagram would show a significant overlap between the Easter Egg police and the "milk is a non-essential item" brigade.

They'll probably move on to advent calendars now!

Who NEEDs new bedding within 4 weeks though? I'm not pro lockdown but I don't get the fuss about essential v non essential for 4 weeks only.

CoffeeCreamandSugar · 04/11/2020 19:10

I’m going to get rather annoyed if that happens. Who is anyone to deem what is or isn’t essential to someone?

IcedPurple · 04/11/2020 19:15

Define 'need'. If you want to get really down to it, nobody needs anything other than water, bread and basic shelter.

But given that we're entering winter, 4 weeks without a heavy duvet, for example, might be a long time. Sure, you'll survive, but is it really a good thing for people to be told what they may or may not purchase in shops which are already open? The benefits in terms of preventing virus spread would seem to be marginal at best.

NothingIsWrong · 04/11/2020 19:19

When my daughter ruined a duvet with vomit we needed a new one in a hurry.

NightRiders · 04/11/2020 19:20

I went to M&S today, one one a retail park, and when I asked them how pond I'd have to return after lockdown she said they weren't closing.

Jouleigh · 04/11/2020 19:20

So have we decided if it's true or not?
DS has a verruca and I don't want to catch it. My mop head fell off my mop this evening (possibly the amount of anti verruca bleach I've been using after his shower). Can I not buy a new mop head for 4 weeks?! ShockSad

PineconeOfDoom · 04/11/2020 19:23

Nope.
Not in my part of England.

It was in M&S here, could only get into the food hall 🤷‍♀️

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 04/11/2020 19:24

When the strap of my DDs sandal broke in April, a new pair was reasonably essential. (Well, she could have worn her wellies...)
When our tin opener broke, we needed a new one.
New towels when old onesgot ruined sorting out a spillage.
Advent calendars.... What's the point of sending seasonal goods to be destroyed as they aren't essential?

MarshaBradyo · 04/11/2020 19:29

Dd did have to wear wellies for a month. Bizarre when you think of it

I don’t think the aisles of Sainsbury’s are any different to the normal food aisles. In fact far fewer people. Seems strange to close them off although they weren’t last time.

TableFlowerss · 04/11/2020 19:33

Where do you draw the line though? Some would say chocolate, alcohol and the like are non essential but I bet they don’t cordon off those isles.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 04/11/2020 19:34

I thought if someone in the household had the Covid you would probably want extra sheets and stuff like that as you are supposed to sleep in a different bed, why would they stop you buying stuff you might need for infection control

Chickychickydodah · 04/11/2020 19:54

@CMMMum
Just go to B& M they are staying open and near enough sell everything 😀

starfish4 · 04/11/2020 19:59

Typical, we only have two sets of bedding. One lot getting a bit thin and I ripped the bottom sheet today. Not really a big deal, but would be much easier if I could buy one in Tesco's where I can walk to. I'd rather not buy online, but will do that in favour of a 15min drive.

Funkypolar · 04/11/2020 20:02

I remember back in the last lockdown, a Boots sales assistant was moaning that a customer went in to buy a mascara and was putting her life at risk.

Meanwhile, Hotel Chocolat is staying open!

I have a stoma bag. If that leaks - I need new bedding. I refuse to sleep in piss soaked bedding for Boris & his cranks 🙂🙂🙂

It would have been easy enough for them to block off the cosmetic aisles - that's what they did in my Tesco's - so clearly Boots wanted the sales.
